The Return of Even More Movies You've Watched This Week III

NOOOOOOOO!!!

Finally got around to watching The Descent. It’s on Amazon (I think, might be Hulu) right now. I liked it a lot. 8/10

Seeing a lot of new movies with Corona and staying home much more. Last night I watched Birdman. This is a bizarre movie. It is one of those movies like “The Shining” which in the end you don’t know really what happened, and I think it is purposely like that. I will give this movie an 8.5/10.

The perfect bad horror movie IMO.

Watched it this weekend… thought it was good myself.
Thought the small amount of controversy over one scene was blown way out of proportion.

There was controversy over the film?? Which scene?

There was a group calling for a ban over the one scene where the female cyclops cop made a comment regarding her girlfriend. The group felt it was not appropriate for a movie which children would watch. After I watched it I was like" Really, that was what the fuss was about?"

Good grief.

That is what I thought…

Finally watched the original Blade Runner. It was decent. I’m sure it was amazing when it came out though. Rutger Hauer’s performance is pretty great. 7/10

Now I want to see the sequel.

Also finished The Night Manager on Amazon. 6 episode minseries. It was predictable but still really good. Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie just chew through scenes like crazy. 8.5/10

Rosemary’s Baby

Wow. Polanski might be a creep x100, but the dude can make a movie. Understated horror is my favorite kind, and this is a pretty great one despite its age. 9/10

Extraction

It was ok. Generic plot. Potentially compelling characters but the writing isn’t up to par. Had a couple of well choreographed gunfu scenes coupled with pretty technically ambitious action sequences. This director will get better. Much better. Looking forward to his future films. Should have starred Nicolas Cage. 6.5/10

The Gentlemen

I really liked this movie. It was a bit different than anything I had seen before. It was pretty violent movie. I give this one 8.5/10.

Waco

Miniseries on Netflix about the ATF/FBI siege of the Branch Davidian compound. It provokes very strong anti-government emotions. Especially the ending.

I’m surprised I didn’t review it when I watched Waco on AMC when it first aired. Two years ago now maybe? It was definitely one of the better series I’ve seen in the last few years.

It doesn’t make the government look very good, does it? Neither did the actual event, either.

I vaguely remember the event itself (I was 11), and I haven’t researched it at all. I used to hear more about Ruby Ridge (which is touched on in the series as you know) when I listened to right-wing radio. They seemed to be allergic to Waco for some reason. Probably the kid fucking.

I always thought you were two years older than me instead of the other way around. I was in Jr. High and I got a big dose of Waco because our school had just installed “Channel 1”, which was basically news snippets we’d have to watch every day.

At the time the Branch Davidians were being spun as domestic terrorists. You really didn’t get the Branch Davidian side at all, which is what I thought was interesting about the miniseries. I should probably pick up a book about the event as well. It is a fascinating case of what freedom in America means.

Great show.

On the cult theme, we as a group of Orthodox people watched “UnOrthodox”. It has been distracting to hear my family (basically all women) scream at the glaring inaccuracies as they guzzle wine.

Of course, we are not Satmar (a particularly difficult group of non-Zionist Haredim), but rather Chabad, which is generally Zionist Hasidic.

But its a good show about leaving what is essentially a cult. One of my daughters know the actor who plays the “muscle” very well. He did a good job. Looks like a Jewish Chris Pratt.

Watched Extraction tonight. I liked it for the most part. There was a John Wick vibe at times, but they kept it sorta realisticish…

Great fight scenes.

I legitimately almost had to turn off the parts with kid violence though - I can watch pretty much anything, but since becoming a parent, I’m incapable of watching stuff happen to kids or even youths without projecting it onto my kid. Made it through it, but it’s always a mindfuck for me.
