From what I’ve read it was designed to be the mess that it is. The episodes were supposed to be adaptations of different stories and not one story. I’ve never read the books so Idk…
I agree, though. The timeline, in particular, is pretty confusing.
I really enjoyed the episode with the botchling (I think it was a botchling I might be misremembering. I just started replaying The Witcher 3) and I do think they did a really good job on the few fight scenes.
I watched the first episode of Dracula on Netflix. It was strange in a good way with a few jump scares. I enjoyed it for what it is 7/10.
From what I know of the books, the first two are basically prequels to the main story (5 books starting with The Blood of Elves). Those prequels don’t seem to have much continuity between chapters (I only read half of the first one). It seemed like this season covered the prequels and ended with the very beginning of the first book in the main story.
I’m hoping that once they get into the main story, things will start to make more sense. I would love to read the books, but the writing is really awkward. I don’t know if it’s due to the translation, or whether I just don’t agree with the writing style, but I had a really hard time reading the parts of the books that I did (half of the first “prequel,” and 90% of The Blood of Elves).
In any case, I’m not planning on finishing the rest, so I hope the series improves.
So we watched Joker last night. My wife enjoyed it so much she fell asleep, lol. My thoughts are, as a drama I thought it was a very good movie. Joaquin Phoenix was really good. Dude is definitely a good actor.
That said, I thought it being in the DC universe detracted from the story. I thought the stuff with Thomas Wayne was a bit forced. At one point I had forgotten it was a DC movie and thought it was a crime drama/ bio pic based around New York City’s crime wave in the 80s/90s until someone mentioned Gotham. Then I was like, oh ya duh. I dunno, I just thought it was strange being a comic book adaptation.
Probably give it a 7/10. It’s worth a watch for Joaquin’s performance, but I’ll probably never see it again. These types of movies aren’t my cup of tea too, though.
I’m pretty surprised at how little I remember of what happened in the movie now when I think about it. I think the problem is they didn’t know the difference between making a movie that’s depressing and making one that’s actually haunting.
In case anyone gets triggered, I think Joker is a very good movie. It just shouldn’t have been so focused on emulating Taxi Driver because THERE IS ONLY ONE SCORSESE. They should picked up points on storytelling from Midnight Cowboy.
The characters are so different it’s hard to really compare them. Like I said, Joaquin’s Joker didn’t feel like it belonged in the DC Universe at all. He was basically a mentally challenged man that had a fucked up life and he cracked in such a way that sparked community outrage in a manner of speaking.
Where as I never once thought of Ledgers Joker as anything but an interpretation of the comic book character.
Again, good movie. Everyone should see it for themselves it just hit me as a strange use of the character.
I watched this because I saw a youtube video about it causing people to have panic attacks and literally run out of the theater (due to the nature of certain violent scenes) when it was shown at film festivals. Personally, I wasn’t shocked at all, and I couldn’t help but feel like I’ve seen this same movie at least 5 times already.
However, this is a pretty good revenge movie. I really wasn’t familiar with the historical setting (Australia during the Black War), so it was interesting in that respect. The performances are also pretty solid.
7.5/10

Pretty awesome WWI movie, of which there aren’t many. Has a very similar feel to Saving Private Ryan. Definitely a must-see IMO.
This movie should have been so much better than it was. Great cast (Cavill, Kingsley, Tucci, and the complete smoke show Alexandra Daddario) and an interesting premise. Execution was muddled to the point of nearly being incomprehensible. The plot takes many ludicrous turns, and the ending (which I saw in fits and starts due to the overwhelming urge to sleep) was just goofy.
5/10
On the bright side, Sneaky Pete is a pretty good show. I finished the first season with my wife Friday night. Giovanni Ribisi is a perfect con man, and the supporting cast is pretty awesome. However, I think that the show is going to grow more and more implausible as the seasons wear on, which will be a problem for me. That was an issue in season 1 and I don’t see it getting any more believable.
