The Psychology Thread 🧠

I’ll take a look at those. Thanks.

My suspicion is that bragging is much better received when a way can be found to include the intended audience in the compliment. We, not me…

People like us who have studied the science of weightlifting for years have made some very impressive gains on their deadlifts!

It also shames people who are not ā€œwe,ā€ so it generates more social traction.

Don’t show off every day, or you’ll stop surprising people. There must always be some novelty left over. The person who displays a little more of it each day keeps up expectations, and no one ever discovers the limits of his talent.

A 2022 report by the Bureau of Justice Statistics revealed that from 2017 to 2020, the rate of domestic violence among lesbians was more than twice that of straight individuals (10.3 vs. 4.2 victimizations per 1,000 persons aged 16 or older).

I wonder why?

Now there are two people that need to be hit?

That is terrible and also I laughed.

It is weird though. I think most people would assume the opposite: lower rates of domestic violence.

I also found this:

The 2010 National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey found that 44% of lesbian women reported experiencing rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime, compared to 35% of heterosexual women.

When compared as a whole, the rates are typically:

Lesbian: Highest
Gay Males: Lowest

The straights fall in the middle.

Some think that maybe lesbians REPORT domestic violence more often and that skews the stats. :man_shrugging:

I’d guess that the expectation and anticipation of violence is what tampers men down.

Every one of us has had the experience of a screaming woman wailing on us knowing we can’t do anything back.

This book is very interesting and has some evidence for that.

Maybe not.

Guys were taught that its not nice to hit girls. Its kinda taboo, and guys that do it are usually looked down upon.

On the other hand, I don’t know what girls are taught, but minus the size & strength disparity between men & women, it seems like it would be a ā€œfair fightā€.

That makes sense.

No, we haven’t.

I think I’ve seen the inverse for adultery - gay males: highest, straights in the middle, lesbians: lowest.

You’d think this would then also apply to gay males.

I’m sorry, I forgot you’re gay.

No homo.

Change knowing to thinking.

:man_shrugging:t2:. Neither one wants to hit a girl?

Good clarification.

It’s like my coach said, ā€œIt’s not gay if you beat them up afterwards.ā€

I don’t know if this is supposed to be a joke or not.

It is. More of a commentary on how I assumed we all had the psycho ones and you dodged the bullet.

If a coach says it, thats how it is. Thems the rules.
