The Option? In the NFL???

Anyone see the Dallas/Oakland game last night? Dallas not only has one but TWO of the “new breed” of mobile/running quarterbacks (and contrary to popular belief, these guys can throw MISSLES, baby…). Carter even ran the OPTION last night! Now I know that with the size and speed of NFL linebackers and defensive backs, you’re not going to see an emergence of the “Wishbone”; that would be pure suicide… but there has to be some rethinking on defensive stategies. What do you guys think? (Coach Davies…I’d like to hear what you think…I’m sure you’ve seen your share of changes in football…)

I love what is happening to football right now - athletes are taking over. The recognition that speed will crush the competition is long overdue. I was speaking on a conference call last night to some members of my mentor program and I mentioned to them what a incredible time this in strength and speed conditioning. Finally, the pathway to dictate competition is right in front of us. I hope to hear from you again. In faith, Coach Davies

I thought it was great. Everyone kept talking
about how bad Quincy Carter was going to be.
He kicked ass in my opinion. Big, strong, fast
and his arm looked pretty damn good too.
That one pitch over the defender as he was being tackled brought me off the couch.
YES!! kinda’ hurt though as I strained a groin
on Sunday doing chinees.

If you want to see someone who fits that description perfectly check out Jason Thomas, quaterback @ UNLV. Kiper rates him the best in the nation… fast as hell, big and a cannon for an arm…

If you think the option is going to work for Dallas during the regular season, I would like to sell you the Brooklyn Bridge. Carter and Smith will last half a season before being injured if they keep it up. All you need to know is that it was Jerry Jones’ idea, and that will tell you how welll it will work. That gimmicky crap always looks good in the preseason, against guys who will harldy see any playing time during the regular season (if they even make the team), but when its the real deal it is a whole different game.

Carter can throw missles, but he has the accuracy of a Iraqi scud (one good preseason game does not equal a great player or even a “good” season…you must be a Dallas fan, I admire your optimism  ). Granted he is young and may eventually become a good player, but to think he is going to do anything substantial this season is waaaaaay of target. I am rooting for him hard to succeed because no one is giving him a chance (I love underdogs), but I don’t think it will happen this year.

That being said I will be glad to see Dallas go 2-14 or worse!! Unfortunately for the Dallas fans (good for me!!), Jerry Jones is your owner and his ego ruined the only good decision he ever made (hiring Jimmy Johnson). Don’t kid yourself, the reason Dallas was so dominating was because Jimmy built a great team and assembled a kickbutt coaching staff. Sure they did win one year without Johnson, but it was still Johnson’s guys on the field. Now look at them.

carter=good athlete NOT good qb, he will not last, one Q if he IS the future then why is dallas interested in leaf? the “new breed”, some will be good (McNab,Cullpeper) but a qb’s job is still to throw the ball and make good choices. I live by philly and do think mcnab will be pretty good but the pocket passer will ALWAYS be the ideal.

Jerry Jones is the Peter Angelos (Katana is a Baltimore boy)of the NFL. Run a great team not only into the ground but into disgrace. The salary cap will slam the Cowboys this year. The option can’t work consistently in the NFL - the defenses are too big and quick and there’s way too much that can go wrong. I do agree that the paradigm for quarterbacks has changed and athletisism (sp) is demanded of the position now.

i think this “slasher” thing is a bit overdone. look at kordell stuart, tons of hype a while back, now nothing. McNair is the only one that ever panned out really imo (Titans were soooo close 2 yrs ago).

Scott: Great post and thoughts…just a little rebuttal…1) Nope…not a Dallas fan, or even a big fan of the NFL. Division 1 College Football is more my love; give me a Keith Jackson “Whoa Nellie” ANY day over “Boomer’s” rantings!..(by the way…Keith couldn’t completely retire…he will be doing a few games and some commentary…)2) I made it clear in the post that with the size and speed of Pro linebackers and defensive backs, the Option would be suicide. I agree…there is a BIG difference between Carter going up against those guys last night and thinking that he’d live to see another day optioning against Ray Lewis or the Minnesota linebacker core…3) I love the underdog too!4) Jimmy Jones IS a Control Freak and tyrant, but he PAYS THE MOOLA!..So…still some open questions…1)is the “new breed” of mobile, fast quarterbacks the trend, OR is the “pocket passer” still going to be the one who wins? 2)Do you think Defensive Coordinators have to do any SIGNIFICANT changes in schemes because of these guys, OR this is not a “trend” at all, so they ain’t worried about it? (By the way…how is Vick doing in the Pre-Season?). Thanks guys!

Speaking of Jerry Jones I saw him on a television interview last night and to me he sure does look different then a year ago. It could just be me but I’m thinking did this guy go out and get a facelift or something?? I know he has a reputation of dating women 3 times younger then he is.

I live in Dallas, surrounded by Homers.

  1. The option will not work in the NFL, never has, never will, as a basis of the offense.
  2. This team will go 5-11 at best
  3. I am not a huge Jimmy Johnson fan. He did nothing in Miami. His assistance have all failed or are C- coaches at best. The Cowboys built themselves on a good draft from Minnesota being boneheads and giving up the farm for Herschel Walker. Jimmy’s drafting after that fiasco was fair, and went downhill quick.
This renaissance to better atheletes is long overdue. With the salary cap and free agency, parity is here and it sucks. Where I feel teams will excel is preperation, conditioning and luck in staying healthy. general strength is great, but one name, Tony Mandarich. GPP, sport specific training and intelligence will be the key

Ahh, Mufasa, my forte is football. I come and read everyones posts for lifting knowledge, so I hope I can help a bit with the football.

Minnesota’s LB’s are weak. Maybe you mentioned them as a opposite to Ray Lewis, as in saying the option won’t work against the NFL players. Well the option might work… but if only run twice or so a game, every once in a while to keep defenses on it’s toes, and it’ll still probably only gain a few yards. THe option only really works as a bread and butter play when the talent level on the offense is higher then that on the defense.

Now, onto the fast, running type of QBs. There’s recently been a few articles on it at Espn.com, under the NFL section. I don’t think many coaches even think about if a QB can run and pass, or just pass. Running however is a definate added bonus. Perhaps not to some coaches game plans, especially if they don’t like anything improvised and every play scripted and ran. So it’s probably different to every team. One thing that the McNabbs and Culpeppers bring to a team though, is an extra chance for a broken play to be turned into a huge gain. Some of the newer QB’s like Culpepper and McNabb have the arms and accuracy of a pocket passer… the only negative is maybe sometimes they’ll bail on checking off each WR and take off running too early. So a large part of it is the individual QB and team.

One thing just about every Defensive player or coordinator will tell you, is that the mobile QB brings something to the game that you just can’t prepare your players for very well. Which in most opinions is a definate bonus.

Thanks, Jake! When I think of the “heyday” of option play, I always think of the “Horns” of Texas and the “Wishbone”, and of Oklahoma. You’re right…the talent was usually so much greater than the defense, as those offenses would rack up obscene numbers of yards. Of course, the real problem (and one of the big reasons that the Option would NOT work in the NFL) is that the QB, fullback and RB were usually “checked off” and popped on every play. The fullback (except on short yardage) was almost always “sacrificed” in a way. You wouldn’t last very long in the NFL with the likes of Lewis popping you on almost every play, or a “running full steam” defensive back hitting you on most plays in an attempt to break up the toss…In terms of the moblie QB’s, that’s sort of what I was thinking…they give a team another option, and in some cases, an “edge”…Any idea on how Vick is working out and how he did in the pre-season?

How much does this remind you of “Any Given Sunday”? =)
