The Open Boat

Heh Nadia, it wasn’t PMS week by any chance? The week before Flo I’m always clumsier, more forgetful and more tired (not to mention grumpier, but that’s a given).

Sex can be considered conditioning.[/quote]

i know i do!

LOL @ “deload hard”
You’re a machine, you do everything to perfection ;D

Your hubby is very sweet, but that’s the least he could do after that day! Holy crap, that’s my 24-hour mess, but all that happened before work. Sheesh.

Kimba, Laststand, and Nikki: I’m very lucky. Hubby is a dear one. Happily, I’m finally feeling recharged today and I have plans for a nice easy run tomorrow.

Cbear and Snap: If sex is conditioning, then I guess fucking like a rabbit would make a person a cardio bunny? Are you two really ready to embrace and own up to your inner pinkness?

Cal: No, not PMS-ing. I’m just a tornado. My husband always puts his keys, wallet, and phone in the exact same place. But, I follow no clear or predictable path. Losing important items is an ongoing problem for me. It’s part of my charm. My car came with three keys, and I’m down to the valet key. Where are the others? Somewhere in my house I suppose. I always make it home. It’s finding the things I need to get out of the house that is the challenge for me.

Hell I think I’m going to join you on that run tomorrow. I know, desperate times call for desperate measures :stuck_out_tongue:

LOL “cardio bunny”
Clever.

Hey girl, sorry for being late in responding, I got real busy the last couple days.

I did test my maxes prior to my meet - the week prior to my rest week. Mainly because I hadn’t tested them in so long. There is an article about 531 for PL-ing on here, and the gist of it is that instead of doing 5/3/1, you would do 3/5/1, push the 3, only hit the 5, and go for heavy singles on the 1. I haven’t tested a max since the meet. I’ve set a PR in squat, but I don’t think it was max.

And good luck in keeping track of your things! It’s hard when you’ve got so much going on!

Nikki: A run is a permissible “desperate measure.” But, why are you feeling desperate? If body building is what you want to do, your potential is going to be reached by staying in the game over the long haul. In fact, this is true of most endeavors. I know you want to wreck your first show, and I have no doubt that you will, but it’s just the first step. Pace yourself my dear. We are all just works in progress.

Polsen: Thanks! Apparently, I read that article because I have been doing the 3/5/1 template, but not with the heavy singles. I’m using it to give my body time to adjust to the BBB template. I will read that article again though for sure.

Training:

A 6+ mile run in the pissing down pouring rain.

I enjoyed myself when I gave up trying to keep my feet dry and splashed my way through the puddles instead. I took off my hat and stuck out my tongue to taste the rain. I waved and nodded in a show of solidarity to the one other runner I saw. It’s okay I don’t think you’re crazy either our eyes said. A block from my house I stopped and rescued a drowning worm from the concrete sidewalk. I fight for second chances for people every day, and rarely win them. It can get discouraging, but this was an easy one to give. Well not exactly easy because it is quite hard to pick up a warm when your hands are cold and wet. But, I found a way. A second chance can be a very powerful thing. Maybe even for a worm.

That’s very Buddhist of you, rescuing the worm. Glad you enjoyed the run. Rain’s something I have to deal with a fair bit here. I wear Nike Frees which are shit for keeping your feet dry, so I’ve given up trying to bother. Especially when small dogs chase me into puddles. grumble

What do you wear in the pouring rain to keep yourself warm enough? When I’m wet, it is so hard for me to keep warm, but maybe running generates sufficient warmth. I wouldn’t know, never having run in the rain.

I liked the worm story. Yay for second chances!

Loved the worm story <3

Dunno about Nadia but I wear a thick hoodie. That’s pretty warm - not waterproof but thick enough to keep the worst of it out. Obviously I tend not to run in driving rain, but your regular rain, sure.

Cal: I know about rain too. My less is more running shoes offer little protection for my feet. And I’m not sure what happened to me today with the worm, I passed him, but then felt compelled to go back. He was just a little thing. I don’t know about where you run, but I’m treated to a variety of road kill sightings in my travels. Death bothers me. And I knew that if I just left him there, I’d see him tommorrow all white and drained of color. Really, it was a selfish act.

Kimba: My base layer is nike combat dri fit tights and a long sleeved crew top. I love these. THe tights are generally enough of a bottom layer for me, but if I need a second, I’ll wear a pair of fleece pants–not high tech at all. On top, I always wear a second long sleeved hoodie of similar dri fit material, and then a lightweight rain slicker. If I need a third layer on top, it’s just a thin vest. And always a hat. In the rain, you need a brim. I have gloves for my hands, but I don’t usually wear them. Generally, think light layers, with 1 more on top than on the bottom. Keep your core warm, and you’ll be fine. I was mostly wet through to my skin today (it was a down pour), but it was okay over the hour that I was out. There may be some water proof stuff you can buy, but I don’t like the stiffness of that kind of fabric, or the sound it makes when I’m running.

Coyote: The kid in me came out during that run today. I was happy to be running again, and I did not want the rain to damper my fun! So, I pictured my kids running in the rain, and ran like them.

I don’t want to run because of the competition, just to clear my mind. Running is what got me into training in the first place, and I only ran because of stress. Now I’m back where I started haha

Running in the rain sounds lovely. Sadly, this morning it felt like a hurricane. If I was to venture outdoors, the winds would have carried me, and I won’t be in Kansas anymore.

That was lovely about the worm. And the flowers. Good on you for deloading hard. I think I’m gonna need to learn to do this because I kinda do it half assed and I’m sure I’d do better afterwards if I did it properly.

Nikki: Sorry about the stress in your life. Hope things settle down.

Alexus: I’m pretty sure you’re supposed to keep moving through your deload. I have a tendency to just shut it down though. I have a why bother to go lift weights half-assedly in the name of deloading–I have plenty of other stuff to do!

Ah, shit. Training= a 13.1 mile run. I had planned to cap my distance at 8 miles, and keep my running recreational for awhile, but I’m now signed up for another half marathon in Feb. My sister has lured me into a virtual racing challenge. We will be competing over three distances over the entire year, 5k, 10k and the half. Winner of each distance (whoever posts the fastest chip time) gets the losers race t-shirts for that distance and bragging rights of course. We can enter as many races as we want. I’m hoping to post an early time to beat in the half.

This sister is really the athlete in our family. But, I took her out last year with my half times and my pullup exploits. She’s now determined to reclaim her title. I’ve got a good chance of holding her off in the half, but she will likely kill me in the 5k, and the 10k–ughhh. I’m happy to be my sister’s rabbit. I have always been that. She has erased every running record I have ever set. And the running record I now hold that she wants is the fastest half marathon time (in our family).

I won’t be going down without a fight though. After this half, I’m taking to the track. If I want to compete with her in the 5k or 10k I’ve got to learn how to run faster over shorter distances.

Running against your sister sounds like fun. Me, I just run against myself. How long does it take you to run a half, by the way? I’m reckoning that it’ll take me at least 2 hrs 15, but probably more (I’m a plodder).

13 miles? That’s awesome.

Ha, that challenge sounds fun, I love how you guys take it so seriously with the titles and everything

You might want to add some conditioning like tabatas and such. They helped me run faster, due to a better conditioned heart.
If you have the time to do that, of course. You’re the running expert, I’m sure you have a gameplan already.

running really is an alien activity to me. sounds like a nice competition that you have going with your sister.

That sisterly competition is so. awesome! What a huge motivator. Is she your older or younger sister?

God, I would SO like to run on a track given the horrible snowy weather 'round here. How on earth do you find a track to train on???

Cal: I had a break through with my running when I started strength training. Last year I ran three half marathons under 2 hours. But, prior to that I was more of a 2:10 or so kind of runner. My personal best, and the Comeandeat family record to beat is 1:52:50.

Nikki: You are absolutely right about the tabatas–I do too much crap steady state work, and I would benefit from more anerobic work. But, that shit is hard and it hurts!

Alexus: My sister and I have fun. The competition is a nice way for us to support and encourage one each other.

Kimba: The sister at issue is 6 years younger than me. Re: the track–I live in a rainy world. We don’t see much snow. Have you checked out area high schools near you? I ran winter track in the NE. We trained outside. The town plowed our track–it’s cheaper than providing for indoor facilities.
