The Open Boat

The reason I had to take my pullup bar out of the door to the basement is that our incredibly noisy kitty has to get shut in there every night. Sleep is much more important than feline convenience and happiness.

Frenchie: Stop it you’re turning me on.

Arachne: I’d like a Haiku! Get to writing because I have a PR to tell you about in this post though! Like many of the women on this board, I heart Dling too. I don’t know why though. The activity is absurd. Bend down, pick heavy shit up, and put it back in the exact same place. Repeat. I’m a mother, with two messy kids, a husband, a job, a house, a cat, a dog–I have plenty of other things I could be picking up–dog poop from the back yard, mislaid coats and shoes and dirty laundry. But, it’s DLing I love. I think I need Frenchie to come whip my family into shape.

Cal and Kimba: My kitty is talented. He can open doors. That little fucker will not be denied I tell you. But he actually is a very nice cat. Very patient with my kids. Indeed, he seems to like their manhandling. I tolerate him for that reason alone.

5-3-1 DL Training

Done today because I’m rested from skipping gymnastics .

4 mile run to warm up because it impresses (or disturbs) Kimba and Cbear.

DL
barx10
135x5
145x5
165x3
190x11 This is a pr because this is the first time I have EVER pulled 190 for reps and because it is better than the pr I just set last week of 185x10. I ground these reps out like a meat processing plant. It was disgusting. Indeed, my kitty was looking at me disapprovingly when I finished with a don’t make me call 911 on your ass look.

One rep and one set at a time I made my way through BBB
DLs 135x10x5
HRS 15x5
GHR 15x5

I believe.

I bow to your 11 reps at 190. I’m looking for this to be one-rep max…someday soon after I rehab some form issues with rack pulls.

You are very strong. And an entertaining writer!

Ha! Your description is better than my haiku.

The clanking of plates
Says I picked up 190
Eleven reps, bitch!

Apparently your cat is not the impatient one that I had. I had a cat that slapped me because I was making fun of him for licking his privates. Hmph.

Awesome DLs, another PR goal reached this week!
Er, 4 mile warm-up. 5 minutes on the treadmill not good enough for you, eh? ;D

I’m teasing, I love it!

Awesome DLs there! I am impressed! I still can’t believe you did all of that work after running. My legs would literally be JELLO.

First you pick it up once
Then you pick it up 11 times!!

most people add reps gradually you beast.

HAHAH! I LOVE Arachne’s haikus!! So funny.

Nadia, 11 reps at 190 is insanity! Well done woman.

I also love how you call the act of DLing absurd…it is, isn’t it.

PRs abound! Keep up the great work.

OH! And I just tried that L-sit thing you posted in Kimbas log…surprisingly I was able to get it! I held it for a few seconds and then my quad started to cramp up. HAH! I’ll leave that stuff to the gymnasts around here.

Much thanks Kimba. You’ll hit 190 soon I’m sure, but what’s this rehab sentence I’m hearing about? Your Dls are beautous. You sure you need that? Come on pull ugly with me. It’s so very bad and fun!

Arachne: Love the Haiku. Wrote it in my sprial notebook log for posterity and for future inspiration.

Nikki: I run like an old car–slow to start and warm, but good once I get going.

Polsen: I was a runner first and for most of my life. I guess my legs are just used to it.

Frenchie: I know I was thrilled with 11. Just thrilled.

Maschy: Thanks and yeah those straddle L holds are weird. I feel them in my hips and thighs primarily too and not my core and arms like I would think.

+++++++++++++++

I got a huge DL high yesterday that lasted all day. I felt absolutely awesome all day–full of energy and my body felt great. I was completely unprepared when I woke up this morning feeling like someone had taken a baseball bat to my back and my forearms. Arggh.

My legs felt fine though. So, I took them for a run–7 miles easy. I’m feeling substantially better for the moving around, the foam rolling, and the contrast showering. No regrets.

Ah, the feeling of wondering exactly who beat the crap out of you when you weren’t looking. I think that deserves another haiku. Great work on the 11 reps. You’re awesome. I’m jealous.

i love deadlifting highs. great work on that.

Nadia, c’mon, you’re taking the piss with this 11 rep thing! (Now I’m off to go cry in a corner).

I like that your running intention is to disturb me.

really.

congrats on the PR anyway, weirdo.

Arachne: Here’s my attempt at a DL pr commemorative Haiku. It doesn’t quite capture it, but oh well.

Stand up strong fight back
Gravity a wooden bat
Deadlift record set

Alexus: I’ve gotten runner’s high before, but this was my first dl one. And yeah it was great.

Cal: Ha! You’re damn right I am “taking the piss” whatever that means. That PR was months in the making. It didn’t come easy.

Training 5-3-1 Squats.

Early AM: 8 mile run–felt great.

Early PM: Squats (because my legs felt better than my traps and forearms)

Pullups: a set of 10 just to fucking get over myself. I was happy with this. I’m not sure how many more I could have done–not a lot, but I’m back in the game now anyway.

Squats:
45x10
65x5
85x5
100x3
110x9 (+5 pr). These were a hellavu grind, and I decided I wasn’t up for BBB. Cursed myself for running back to back long runs.

GMS: 65x10x5 (moved from DL day because bbb dls and gms are too much lower back work for me)
Stepups: 3 sets of 10 with about 35lbs
V ups: 3 sets of 15
planks: 3 @ 1 minute

Decided I couldn’t not even try to do my BBB squats, so I did them. Sometimes having low expectations works to your advantage. And I was pleased with how I negoitated the sets. 65x10 x4 and last set 75x10. I’m ready to increase the weight on these!

Then I went for a walk in the rain. I walked until I was walking normally, and then, feeling better, I walked a little farther.

Congrats on getting back on the pull-up grind

And another squat PR, awesome!
Who cares that you weren’t up for BBB, you do a lot anyway.

Are you on week 3? You need to adjust your DL max up a bit. 11 reps is cardio!

That was a hell of a lot of work! Wow.

10 pullups would have me dancing in the streets, but I understand you are coming at those with higher expectations.

I’ve wondered about this. Does the program say anything about the fact that if you’re hitting more than x reps on the money set that you need to reset the max? Because it doesn’t seem like you’re training maximal strength if you’re hitting so many reps. It seems like you’re training endurance, which is probably fine for Nadia, because she’s readily admitted that she’s a rep whore. But I’ve noticed this trend (what I would consider super high reps on the money set) with several of you girlies. And I just wondered if the program addresses how to handle this.

Snap, my understanding of the 5/3/1 program is that its designed to be a very long-term, years-long effort. As the months pass, you steadily increase your maxes and eventually you reach your limits. At that point, you re-set your maxes somewhat and work through the months again until you hit the wall. And again, and again.

Nadia as strong as she is will not be able to get 11 reps on the money set as the months pass. At some point, she won’t be able to get the prescribed reps at all and then she’ll reset her maxes. Maybe she’s set her original one-rep maxes too low, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. She’ll just be able to avoid resetting for a good long while.

This long-term approach is actually what I really like about 5/3/1. I understand that it is not for everyone, and especially not for folks with a six-to-eight week horizon.

This sounds like the kind of challenge that Nadia will like.

Kimba: point taken. Thanks for clarifying!
