GH is the main reason you see the guts on alot of competitors today.
True.

Paulie’s right about a waist naturally thickening to support a much larger torso mass, and I have no problem with a bigger waist. It’s the protruding, bloated pot belly that just ruins what I’ve come to love about the proportions of classic bodybuilders.

I think some guys are returning to that classic look while keeping a large amount of mass.

Shawn Rhoden and Ced McMillan are prime examples of this.
McMillan is insane, i wonder how he will look if he decides to get massive.

haha, Don’t get me wrong he is a monster. But I mean when/if he gets his competition weight to 250+ I wonder how he and his midsection will look.

That’s how Branch Warren is going to look in 10 years.

how can someone be 3% bodyfat have over 190lbs of lean mass and still have no ab definition… His bellybutton has more definition than his abs.

This is Hany Salib, who has the worst case of Stage IV Palumboism I’ve ever seen and genetics completely unconducive for bodybuilding competition! Google “Hany Salib palumboism” to see the various discussions on this case study.

Iron Dwarf is right in recognizing that Branch is in the early stage of Palumboism.

Looking at photos like this, I wonder just how far downhill pro bodybuilding has gone and think that the current crop of pros and high level national competitors would be DESTROYED by the likes of Dorian Yates, Shawn Ray, Flex Wheeler, Chris Duffy, Mike Francois, Dennis Newman, Lee Priest, Nasser el Sonbaty, and so on!

Hey Brick

Do you know the processes that occur in the body for a Polumboism situation to arise? What actually is the cause? Or is it a degenerative, cumulative process of variables, and not a single element?

Oh, I’ve read a bit about that, I knew about the thickening of the mid-section/pelvis/organs and the neanderthal jaw but I think this guy has a few other things going on - Gyno, numerous torn muscles,an ALIEN!!

Definitely some similarities with Branch here

First…I do NOT disagree with the OP, I love the 90’s physiques compared to today.

That said, there’s a little bit of irony here. Maybe it’s me showing my late 30’s age, but I seem to recall that it was back in the mid to later 1990’s that everyone was saying the exact same thing about that era’s BBers when compared to the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s bodybuilders.

I can clearly recall an early Muscle Media editorial (who knows, maybe it was even a TC Luoma piece) talking about the growing gut and drug excesses of then-contemporary bodybuilders.

Hell, the first time I ever heard/read the phrase GH gut was in reference to Dorian Yates and some of his on-stage competitors.

yeah dude, Dorian Yate’s gut was pretty bloated, but he was just fortunate enough to have great genetics and shape to offset this, mostly from his Back.

his gut is still nothing compared to some of these guys though not to mention he looked amazing in his prime

What a coincidence; I was wondering the same things myself and once considered starting a thread on it to see peoples’ insight on the condition.

It seems similar to lipodystrophy, which might actually be occuring. See the atrophying but lean limbs and the expansion of the mid-section. It’s just bizarre. You see some of those afflicted in their prime and the muscles look nice and full and years later they look ill, literally.

LOL! That would be a good thread to start, and I’m sure some guys here in the medical field could lend some theories on this.

It really is bizarre, and quite disconcerting to think that at some point, any large champ could fall victim to it.

Branch Warren should be made illegal.

oh man For some reason I was thinking he was 230, that’s kinda dumb.

The guy in that pic (‘early stages’) also looks like he’s torn his bicep, possible hernia… all things that are becoming much more common in today’s athletes.

Additionally, while older athletes can still get fairly lean, there do seem to be areas that will simply regress a bit with age, especially with assisted competitors (midsection and lower pecs come to mind).
