Track today–a workout inspired by Noah’s arc–pairs.

800x2 @ 3:25. How difficult these felt broke my heart.

400x2 @ 1:35. Self doubt. Am I getting ANY better?

200x2 @ :43 then :39.7. Wanted a sub 40 time on that second attempt more than anything. Achieving it made me feel weepy. It really was a full out effort for me. I felt pride and despair with the accomplishment. I wasn’t a great HS runner, but I ran 2:34 in the 800 as a freshman. I shouldn’t compare. But still I do.

100x2. I gave myself a break and didn’t time them. Tried to focus on the mechanics of running faster.

Walked the long way home. I feel like a hamster in an exercise wheel. Running hard going no where. I’m not sure that 1 track workout a week is going to get me anywhere. But do I have the ability to fit in two? I have a lot of goals and chasing all of them at once is leaving me feeling a bit like I’m treading water. Uggh. I don’t like doubting myself. I really need to figure out what I’m doing with the running.

I have a plan for my mile. I feel better. Intuitive/instinctive training which is what I’ve been doing with the running doesn’t work for me. I need a program. Or even better a coach. This athlete needs to not think. Just do. Also, I need to break this sub 6 min mile goal into smaller bits. For now, I’m training (and adjusting my training times) to hit a 6:50 mile. After that, I’ll restart again and try to run under 6:30…

I can have it all! Damn-it.

Track workout sounds brutal. When I was running sprints, I wouldn’t do them on a track or time them - I just incorporated them into my run or did sprints up an uphill trail. (Mind you, I did sprain my ankle badly coming back down that trail one time - so there’s that). I tried running on a track when I was young and it was boring. Like you, I’d rather feel like I was going somewhere. Or at least, do sprints somewhere with scenery. Still, if you are determined to lower your times then you have to do what you have to do.

The running program that I started on before getting sick had one track workout, one tempo run and one long run every week. That program was designed to improve one’s race time (5K/10k/half/full) so I don’t know how it would correlate to improving a mile time. But for what its worth, one speed workout per week was the mandate.

Gosh, I’m excited to get back to speed workouts. Not quite yet, but soon.

Fucking balls on the pullups! UGH! But you’re a fucking animal. If you want them, you’ll get them. I wish I could offer more support/encouragement - but frankly, your training is a creature unto itself! I don’t know where it goes, or what sorts of mayhem it gets into, but it always returns. Sometimes beaten, broken, and bloodied - but always a little more savvy and a helluva lot tougher, and every once in a while VICTORIOUS.

Love the sprinting workouts, bitch. I don’t have any protocols for getting faster, myself - except to maybe try to run faster? I look to you for your insight and wisdom on that.

And yeah, I hate feeling like a hamster. Scattered training, scattered results. Whatever. I WANT IT ALL!!

Kimba: I found a mile training plan on runner’s world. The treat me gently plan or something like that. I’ll put up a link later. It has more frequent sprinting, but pretty low intensity work. I think it will be good for me.

Masch: YOu’re the best! Sometimes I feel like I should apologize for wanting it all, being unreasonable with the demands that I place on my body, for my expectations. But you know what, I’m not. I’m a total whore for PRs. I want the numbers in the gym to go up and my times at the track to go down. ANd of course, I want to feel like a gymnast again and move like a dancer. Easy peasy stuff.

Tuesday:

AM: MP 3x50; 3x55; 3x65 and pullups 5 sets of 10; chinups 3x2. Pullups were tough.
PM: 3 mile run and 6x100 strides.
No time for dancing.

Wednesday:

AM: squats. 3x135; 3x150; 2x160; 1x165; 10x75x5. RDLS, curls. Scary early. Going to take some getting used to, but I’m a mixing up my schedule. Umm so I can add more shit in. Yes, very naughty.
PM: Gymnastics. No real progress to report. I can almost see my front foot come down on my front walkover though–

Thursday:

AM: 3 mile run: 200 @ 45; 200 jog; 400 @ 95; 400 jog; 400 @ 95.
PM: Will stretch and do handstand stuff ect.

Food. Lots.

Or maybe what is really weird is that even after all these likely 1000s of pullups that I have done over the past couple years I still feel awkward and inconsistent with my form…

hmm. that is so weird that you say that. i thought it was just me that i was so new to them… it is funny to me that you say you don’t care about form but your gymnastics always looks so elegant to me. details. pointed toes and such. i thought your handstand walking looked fantastic but maybe i’ve been watching too many breakdancing youtube clips :-/

will be interested to hear how your running training goes with the speed aspect… kinda interested in the biomechanics of sprinting myself. defranco does sled sprints but i’ve heard there is controversy on whether the sled is the same mechanics / useful carry-over for sprint acceleration… he seems to be getting better acceleration times out of it, though…

Alexus: I care about form in gymnastics and work on that a lot especially now since I’m not really capable of doing anything particularly difficult–the basics can be beautiful. In terms of lifting, I think getting strong requires getting ugly. But not so ugly there’s injury. A fine line probably. Form matters, but if you’re strong enough it doesn’t. That could be backwards thinking, but that’s what I think!

Pullups. Uggh. Glad to read you’re getting back to them. consistency is key. I’ve put off assignments before and it doesn’t help. I still struggle with the, “I need ideal conditions” to pull too. For me, I need to be alone. Kids can’t be in the house. And I prefer not to be a bloated carbed up mess. PUllups are just hard. Better to go and miss than not go at all…that’s what I try to tell myself.

Sled work–I’m not sure about–but it is comparatively low impact–if you load the sled up enough it probably is really good way to get in more work.

With respect to how I record: 200 meters @ 45 seconds. 400 meters @ 90 seconds.
They way I’m doing the program is No stopping. No walking. 2 mile jog warm up, Sprint, jog, sprint, jog, sprint, jog, 1 mile jog warm down.

Sprinting is tough. I can feel it working my body differently. And it makes me hungry. I have been IF, but yesterday after that workout I ate breakfast. Starved.

Still IFing, huh? Nice! I’m the same way, if I train in the am, I have to eat (and frankly you should, for muscle repair, no?).

Anyways, if you IF Warrior style, you are able to eat some snacks during the day if you’re hungry, especially if training in the mornings - like eggs or greek yogurt (I think I just heard you say “blech”), nuts, raw veg, fruit. I also just found that if I fast all day and train at night, an apple pre-workout somehow boasts how long I can last during training. Its crazy! I can put in a 2.5 hour sesh like its nothing, and maybe go longer! Must be some sort of glycogen boast or something…The human body is amazing.

Are you finding you’re eating more at night, or has your “feast” remained relatively the same? My dinners are outrageously huge! Its almost disturbing. Do you know how many carbs you’re getting? I really love eating like this - it totally works for me in so many ways. I don’t think its for everyone though…

Masch: My goal with the IF is to fast until 1 or 1:30. Then eat lean protein and vegetables, protein shakes until dinner. Then dinner, yes, it’s a mess. Sounds like we could dine together in the evening without embarassment. Yesterday for dinner, lazy mom that I am, we had pizza. I ate more than my husband. God, he’s such a light weight. My son, on the otherhand, has inherited my talent for gluttony. I’m going to need a second job to feed him.

3-3-3 Bench

I feel about benching like I do about sitting on a porta-potty seat; I would rather squat. Who would’ve thunk it?! Benching leaves me unfulfilled.

On to the good news–this week 100x3 was better than last week. And I killed it with my kroc rows (well only with my left arm, which is my weak arm so whatever!)

Weight 50 some odd pounds x20 for my left arm! (+ 6 rep pr).

Right arm I only got 17 (+3 rep pr). Lazy-- I thought if I did so well with my left arm, my right arm would be a breeze. I guess I didn’t get up enough for the set. And my hand hurt. I pinched the fleshy part of it loading up the plates when I deadlifted last week–I have a bruise. I’m blaming that.

Awesome job at the Krocs. I also find I am stronger on the left despite being right handed. Initially I put this down to having a chronic right shoulder but my left hand just seems to grip better. Dunno why.

I was actually about to ask about bench after your last post, I noticed it absent. I agree, bench leaves me unfulfilled too. It doesn’t get my heart beating, and I don’t know that it’s ever made me sweat. I don’t have advice, just keep after it, which I know you will.

Training. Just running today . Did a little more than my gentle training plan called for–5 miles plus 4x100. I woke up feeling icky and tried to shake it off with the run. Didn’t work. Felt half speed for most of the day. I’m supposed to DL today, but I’m going to push that off until tomorrow. And hope for a better day.

This woman, no doubt high on meth, stood on a table and started yelling about who knows what, it morphed in to criticizing the female servers, the pigs using them and the club itself, a huge no-no.

A full beer can decked her in the face, she fell off the table and got the shit kicked out of her, by men and women alike. It was sad to see, I certainly wasn’t going to interject though, but it was kinda funny too, in a spur of the moment “what the fuck” kind of way.
