Of course it is a precise word by the guidelines for adding words to the dictionary. If enough people use a word for a specific meaning the dictionary editors add that word to the dictionary along with its meaning, as precise as possible.

And I don’t. It also seems that no one else reading this thread cares one way or the other. Actually, I thought you would see the problem and agree with me. I was wrong again.

That is only so, in so much as I am keenly aware that Jews are not the only descendants of Shem.

My problem is the definition of the root word: Semite. For whatever reason, placing a hyphenated prefix on a word changes the meaning of the root word.

I will graciously concede if you can show me a single dictionary that has an alternate definition of Semite where it has a definition that defines the group as Jewish by faith and/or birth (omitting mention of any other descendants of Shem.)

My guess is that a group created “anti-Semitism” out of the air and started the widespread use of the word to only pertain to the Jews. Is it a word? Sure it is. But it seems to me that anyone who knows the definition of Semite would give pause to hearing the matter anti-Semitism was being used.

I wonder if Islamists would mind being categorized as Semites. My guess is they would not like being grouped with their great enemy.

I have them to aid in interpreting the Constitution (1828 Noah Webster being the closest to the writing of the Constitution and the 1850 Noah Webster for amendments written around 1850.)

Why do you care? Here’s something you, and others like you don’t understand; you can give the Arabs in Gaza money, food, infrastructure, etc., and they will still hate you. They will still continue to murder gays and oppress women. They will still attack Israel. You care more about their children than they do. They do in fact use children as human shields. They do in fact use children, even developmentally disabled ones, as suicide bombers. You could not begin to comprehend that. Would you let your child be a suicide bomber? Would you let your child decapitate someone?

You cannot, using Western morality, make any equivalencies between Arabs/Muslims and the West (which would include Israel). Arabs in Palestine are not bothered by their poverty and low standard of living. What bothers them is seeing Jews being successful. They would rather be poor and keep trying to eradicate the Jews than put down their arms and focus on improving their standard of living. Americans have zero understanding when it comes to how they think.

For whatever reason, once an “oppressed” group decides a word or phrase offends them, suddenly the word or phrase is taboo.

I didn’t find either article saying that children were taught those books in schools, but rather that they were found in houses.

You’ve repeated it many times as if it were true and has great significance. Maybe it is, maybe it does. To me it seems to be an instinct/habit of dehumanizing all of the Gazan population, with a weak foundation, however I suppose there is the possibility you had bunches of tabs open while doing deep research and simply posted the wrong one.

I understand it’s probably way too much to ask of anyone reading this but I think it’s worth making a deep mental note to future self just in case a one eyed miracle worker claiming to be God starts gaining a huge following - he would be lying and you would be in the darkest times of all of human history, and don’t trust the mainstream. It’s like an extremely low cost insurance policy that’s hopefully a tiny waste on the lowest probability event you’ve ever heard.

This is just a plain inaccurate understanding of illogical. Illogical carries with it that it was given some thought. (not much thought in the example of ant-Semitic.) The thought given didn’t consider all the premises. And if it did consider all the premises, it becomes intentionally “illogical.”

We all have our opinion. You have yours. It is just a shame that you have such a poor understanding of the English language.

That said, I am referring to the logic around the word meaning. You seem to want to address the originators of the word. I never addressed the intentions of the originators of the word, only that the word meaning doesn’t logically follow the meaning of the root word. So, you read all that I said about “anti-Semitic” and couldn’t figure that out??? That was my sole point!!!

You post here, you get what you get. This isn’t your safe space. Here’s some truth for you, you won’t like it and you probably won’t directly respond to it: people don’t generally move to Muslim nations. They tend to, if possible, run away from them. Muslim nations are either shitholes, literally with people shitting anywhere and everywhere or, if there is a higher standard of living, such as in Saudi Arabia, it comes at the expense of what is essentially slave labor (SA outlawed “official” slavery in the 1960s so there are living people there who were once slaves). In all cases, they are violent countries with oppressive governments (something that hasn’t changed in that region for thousands of years) and no concept of civil rights and personal freedom. Look at Lebanon, once it became majority Muslim, it turned to shit. Compare the Muslim part of Nigeria to the Christian part. You don’t see non Muslims using children as suicide bombers. Now go and write some rambling response that avoids addressing the facts that were just shown to you.

Something to consider is when and where the term originated. It was Germany in the mid 19th century. There were Jews in Germany but I doubt there were very many, if any, Arabs or other Semitic peoples. I doubt there was any nefarious intention. They were aware of anti Jewish actions and rhetoric and that’s all they considered when the term was first used.
