The 'I Love Front Squats' Thread

Sam, when you’re warming up, try just dumping the bar with 135. Dumping front squats is hella easy, and this will probably give you some peace of mind.

Dont love them too much or you will end up being an idiot like me and drop back squat for 6 month only to do fs. I could be squatting much more now.

Dont Listen to this article where the trainer advocate dropping backsquat
Dont

At least for a weaker guy like me, there’s some carryover. I’d only squatted 231 before I started front squatting what I could clean in the snow, never doing more than 209. Joined a gym a month ago and my back squat is now 397 and front squat 286.

But I guess things get different when you’re stronger.

^you got a bigger back squat than me now. You made some great progress and you are def. not part of the weaker anymore.

I think that as an accessory exercise FS are great, but it will be long before I do them again as a main exercise.

I love front squats. I have an easier time going very low when I do them. Back squats are hit and miss for me as I need twice as much time to warm up and get in the groove. I can’t explain it, but I can bottom out with front squats and then do the same weight with a back squat and my knees just kill me.

I’m bout to go hammer some front squats now. Loading the bar with my BW and get AMRAP in 15 minutes. Fun fun!

Thanks man. But I never broke both my legs. How’s the recovery going, don’t think you’ve posted much about it? I’d be interested in reading it, even if you’re not as strong as before yet.

I agree. I do both now, which is working very well so far.

EDIT: Got 298 today.

Started these myself about 4 months ago, had not done them in years. Started having pain to my right hip from back squating and figured I needed a break. In November I recorded a 295 X 1 rep front squat. Not huge by any means but fun trying to get better at it. I also use straps on the bar to hold, since I do not have the flexibility in my wrists to hold.

I love 'em more than back squats because of the way they feel and I get better depth. Problem is at the higher weights I find it really pinches my shoulder blade. I wore a sweater a few times but it barely even helped I don’t know if I’m holding too high or too low or what, anyone have a say on this?

I’ll be squatting tonight, hooray!

You mean pinching where the bar rests across your clavicles? Youll just get used to it, I’ve got what seems to be a permanent bruise there and it doesnt bother me anymore.

Haha people usually just assume that, but its a big ass bruise I wish I knew a girl with a mouth like that! CB all the way, Prince is looking good we need the secondary to actually look like they belong on the field this year

I dont know if you remember but I sure as hell do, coming out of training camp we only had 3 CB. That was a fucking stupid ass move right there. I still cant believe we have Campo, he is an okay coach but I think he is bad fucking luck. He is the reason for the 5-11 seasons.

What happens if Fairly is sitting there at #9?

I did this, too, thinking maybe I would have a magical moment where I returned to back squatting after not doing it for like 9 months and somehow back squat more. My front squat went up, my back squat stayed the same.

Then I decided I was going to start going A2G on back squat so I cant compare if it would have jumped up, cause I would never waste my time squatting to parallel again haha.

So, with an improving front squat, no back squatting, and then switching to A2G, right now my front squat and back squat are really close, like 20 lbs off.

Does anyone do these with the arms out? It forces you to stay upright and feels pretty good on the quads.

I think H4M got a single with 405 like that.

I hit 275 for a single yesterday. Just started front squatting this past month because back squats were messing up my lower back.

you mean cause you didn’t know how to back squat with a good form?

Yup. So instead, I decided to do a movement that keeps me pain free. Is there a problem?

Well they really are different exercises. Substituting front squats for Traditional squats isnt exactly an equal trade off. You should prolly take some time and learn how to properly squat.
