The Grind...

So reading between the lines, your coach thinks lots of heavy triples is the best way to build muscle?

Bet that ham would be good with some eggs and toast! But none for you!!!

Wow, that was a fantastic deadlift session. 60 second rest sets are brutal and makes the weight feel a lot heavier. That’s really solid work.

Well thank heavens, I’m finally beating this damned cold.

I’ve always struggled with “feeling it” during workouts. You know how some guys will report that one day they felt really good and powerful, so they gave 'er s##t and lifted like maniacs. And then the next time they’ll feel off and they’ll back the weights way back and focus on time-under-tension, form and “the squeeze”. I always, always struggle with noticing big differences from one workout to the next.

I used to wonder if it was because I was always tired. Well today I learned the difference.

As y’all know by now, I’m on a 6-day a week workout plan. And because I took last Monday off, and because I’m losing Christmas day and Christmas Eve as workout opportunities, today I’m in the middle of 12 straight workout days. It’s also one of the most demanding. I also only got 6 hours sleep last night. So add up all these factors:

Last killer leg day

  • 2 days off immediately before
  • 8 hours sleep the night before
    AWESOME workout

Today’s killer leg day

  • No day off in 6 days
  • 6 hours sleep the night before
  • just coming off an illness
    Brutal, grinding workout

Every set I had less and less power, less and less energy. By the end I was so physically spent I had to crawl to my locker. I have learned my lesson.

atypical - Thanks for the kudos, but in these parts it sure doesn’t feel all that impressive. I AM pleased at what I delivered, though.

Jersey - Oh, carbs are still on the menu. Just not bread. And f##king legumes… they’re on the menu too. I HATE legumes. Lentils and hummus are the only things I can handle without getting gas so obnoxious even the dog leaves the room.

Brett - My coach’s thinking is that seasoned trainers need some 1RM work, and heavy lifts, but also at a high level of intensity. And the deadlifts are followed by a bunch of isolation work at high reps. It’s an interesting combination of max effort and high density work.

Todd - I figure when I can squat like you do I’ve arrive. Until then you may call my little bitch.

Matty - Broski? Have I just been chest-bumped “jersey style”?

Cav - Thanks for the compliments, but I am sure as hell NOT lean. I got some horrendous love handles and my torso has fattened to the point where the lower pecs are getting awfully blurry. I’ll post an ugly back photo soon.

dday - Yes, 9x3 sucks balls. Today’s 8x3 front squat/back squat/ sissy squat superset was WAY worse.

Can I call you my Little Bitch? …LOL, In all seriousness your doing some good work in here keep it up. Looking forward in seeing how far you can take it.

Your will power is most impressive Sir. I’m not worthy to read this thread.

solid work K, keep going.

As promised, observe the gloriousness of the LOOOOOOOVE handles.

Sorry, Kent, I can match you love handle for love handle. And sorry but my lats aren’t even close to that wide. Once you trim up, I predict your lats will be your best pose.

If you keep up those killer leg routines, you’re bound to put on some serious size downstairs.

As you know, muscle is hard to build. Fat is easy (relatively speaking) to lose.

You’re doing the hard stuff. Be proud of that.

Wow your back is hella wide…CHEST BUMP!

Where’s the back hair?? Real men have back hair.

Thanks for the kind words, guys, but I’m fat, fat, FAT! I’m ready to diet down and see what’s under there. It will give my confidence a boost too. I’m facebook friends with a couple of guys I’ll be competing against in May, and everytime one of them uploads a photo it freaks me out a little. Dunno if I’m competitive or not… but it’s tough not to feel inadequte most of the time.

FUCK! Gotta go train.

Just catching up

that deadlift day was awesome- 9x3 with short rest is good living

the pushup vid more good stuff,

your back is looking thick and and wide

good work all around

the ham is fugging scary

So I?m bummed. My wife won?t be coming to see me compete. I?m not in the least bit surprised, to be honest. I?ve known from day 1 that this isn?t something she?s excited about. She?s smiling and tolerating her goofy husband chasing some goofy goal that takes up a HUGE chunk of time, but she?s really not interested in it.

But here?s the deal. A lot of other folks are coming. Some are flying from across the country. Some are driving several hours. Hell, a number of co-workers have said they?d like to go. All these people, some of whom don?t have much of a vested interest in me, and they?re going to inconvenience themselves to come.

But not my wife.

Why not?

I don?t get it. When she chooses to pursue something, it doesn?t matter whether it interests me or not. I get involved.

Sigh.

It?s reality. I?ve made peace with it as much as I?m able. But this makes me sad.

At least she’s not getting in your way. Some people here have spouses who actively discourage this pursuit.

Maybe you’re not in contest condition yet, but you’re looking good CK. You’ve got good proportions to start with - a big advantage.

that sucks. She should be there for YOU, regardless of her personal interest level in bodybuilding, imo. I hope she changes her mind.

Yeah gotta agree with Austin, she should be there you are putting blood sweat and tears into this passion. Its unfortunate. Have you made your feelings of dissapointment known?

I’m glad that so many of your friends will make it, but really sucks about your wife.

If it’s any consolation, my father was the same way. He never attended ANYTHING I was in . . . period. He would drive us there, drive back, probably watch TV, then drive back & pick us up. Not when I was in a school play. Not when I won the award for best grades in middle school. Not in boy scouts.

OK, now that I remember, he made it to my college graduation.
