The Flame-Free Confession Thread

But at least you’re pretty

Yeah.

Pretty ugly.

Better than pretty weak haha

It’s an old one they cycled through this week. And it’s actually a reasonable one now that I look at it. I was just referencing it as an example of those articles that say “if you’ve lifted for more than a year then you should be able to _________.”

It’s these articles that get me. I’d like to think I’m strong for an average gym goer but I’m not. I’m decent in most categories and great on deadlifts according to this article. Hell, my goal of a 4 plate squat only gets me into the good category.

Classic Jim taking shots at your manhood.

These are all arbitrary “standards” and they shouldn’t bother me, but they do. Consider me whining and that’s why I’m in the flame free thread.

Confession–I’m tall and I suck at bench, OHP, and squat and I’d like to think it has a little to do with having long levers. It also bothers me more than it should.

And I apologize to Dan John for using his article as a bad example. It’s a reasonable article.

I think you’ve made it pretty clear that you don’t care how ugly things might get as long as your body does what you want it to do. :+1:

Today there were 2 girls doing some boxing training at the gym.

Both slight things, singlets and teeny shorts.

One had gloves on.

The other had 2 foam tubes (like squat pads but longer) and was trying to hit the boxer. Who was either blocking or punching the tubes. They’d swap over between rounds.

Whilst it looked silly and useless it was also the closest thing I had seen to start of a porn scene in public.

My rest periods were about twice as long as usual.

I don’t usually miss public gyms, but when I do, it’s stories like these that cause it.

It took all my will not to violate my don’t take pics of people in the gym policy haha

I just looked at 5/3/1 Forever on Jim’s site to see what he’s charging. The first thing I noticed is the barbell with 5 plates on each side. The plates are Standard Barbell but their label is facing me from both sides of the bar.

Who does that!? Who puts the plates facing in on one side and out on the other?

I’ve seen people alternate which way each plate faces as they add them to each side. So the first plate faces in, 2nd faces out (so they are back to back), 3rd plate facing in & 4th out (so 3rd and 4th backs are together), etc.

My current gym has those awful octagon-shaped plates, with no front or back, so there is no facing-in-facing-out dilemma for me to deal with, just shitty landing issues with the DL (and the perpetual deficit).

That’s actually explicitly how the IPF says to load them.

"8. The first and heaviest discs loaded on the bar must be loaded face in; with the rest of the discs loaded face out. "

I don’t think the Standard Barbell plates are what they use in comps. I’ve never seen comp plates in person but the photos look like they’re the same on each side; no big lip.

Right, but I mean the loading pattern you are speaking of.

Edit: they aren’t the same on each side. There is a small lip. This is how you cam have them face inside vs outside.

You, sir, have an abundance of information flying around in your head. You never cease to amaze (and slightly educate) me.

Just a lot of trivia. It is a dumb rule, haha.

I had a judge get cranky with me when I was helping out with a strongman show and loaded an axle deadlift with plates all facing out.

He actually made me unload everything for the next competitor. Nutter.

Anyway, @Frank_C, if you have any sort of connection with a fed that requires the plates like this then it’s best to do all the time to get into the habit.

BTW, amazed an how many people are irked by this lol

How do you guys normally put on plates? I always put them facing in so I can grip the plates better when I pull them off.
