I think a lot of it stems from the surge of strong skinny dudes on YouTube and Instagram. Then you have the guys saying that bodybuilders are big, but not strong. They see that and think that they can only be strong or big but not both.
The internet is an amazing tool, but hurts more than helps young guys starting out and completely eliminates the “try it and see” idea a lot of us had growing up.
Confession:
Unintentionally managed to score a date with a “New Years resolutioner” girl from the gym
Absolute/10 who hadn’t been to the gym in over a year and only recently moved here, was in the hot yoga class (they turn the temp up to 40 degree’s in the studio) and we were chatting prior to the class as I noticed I hadn’t seen her around and she didn’t know where to put anything in the storage… set up in front of me, think she noticed me noticing her and when walking out had a laugh about it, and she asked if I was free
If only people had the common sense, or even the broad enough mind to realize that they can actually use the internet and factual information to help and give them a head start with lifting so they can skip the try it and see aspect (to a certain degree) and just crack on getting results in the end you will have to do the try it and see but by then you will have a good foundation and a good idea what will work etc
Confession: I’ve read this entire thread beginning to end and have laughed so much I’ve cried at several posts. I’m the usual lurker-returned-to-posting and it’s nice to be back.
Second confession: I haven’t had a gym membership for 4 months, and it’s been absolutely liberating. I only have 270 or so pounds of weights and no cardio machines, so I have to be creative about things, which has dramatically increased how interesting my workouts are.
Even though I’m sure I could have found more ways to train around the shoulder than I do, it’s been more of a prioritizing thing than anything else. Always being there and spending as much time with my son as I can, or keep pushing 110% and end up needing full replacement while my son is still young, essentially limiting what I can do with him during his formative years.
Luckily nothing super major… during a match he dislocated his right knee cap about 4 weeks ago. After seeing a Ortho and getting a MRI he has some slight soft tissue damage due to it dislocating and slamming back into place. Unfortunately, full recovery going to take awhile which will be well past when wrestling season ends.
