I lean whiskey/bourbon over scotch. I can’t get into the peatiness of it.
That said, I’m a tequila guy and Patron can get bent.

This depends on what scotch you’re drinking and what area of Scotland it’s produced.
Ha! For the most part, I am too. It’s either one finger before bed, or all of it. No in between.
I have a bottle of Glenfiddich that I think is awful. Glenlivet; however, is fantastic.
I had a bottle of this for over a year. Ended up mixing it with diet coke and could still barely choke it down.
Glenfiddich was my first go at it. Then there was another that was so close in flavor (based on scent, I’ve never eaten a marker) and scent to a Sharpie that I can’t disassociate the two. I’ve grown to be totally okay with this.
I have different beers for different occasions. The weather for the past couple of days has been nice and cool. Highs in the 70’s and overcast and rainy. I love it. I crave the fall beers in this weather. Any Octoberfest is fine. I typically find myself buying whatever variety pack is available at the store—Sam Adam’s, New Belgium, Odell, etc.
But this Sunday is our softball tournament. There are only 7 teams but it’s all police or investigators. There will be beer, and my team drinks lots of it. For these occasions I go with America’s lighter offerings such as Bud Light or Coors Light. It’s not as heavy and goes down easy. This serves two functions. 1) its gets alcohol into my system without filling me up (I play outfield) and 2) it quenches my thirst a bit.
In regards to liquor… well, I’m all over the place. I used to be a Crown Royal guy but I think the quality has gone downhill. I found a whiskey called Pendleton made in Wyoming. It’s a couple bucks cheaper than Crown and tastes better. It’s also aged 10 years instead of 7.
Over the past few years I’ve only drank liquor in the summer. I’ll go with vodka and lemonade flavored ice tea (John Daly’s version of an Arnold Palmer). I’m also not afraid of tequila, usually margaritas. And occasionally I’ll just get some rum. I enjoy Bacardi Añejo which I found at the Barcelo Resort in the Riviera Maya. It tastes good and takes me back to that week at the all inclusive resort before we had kids.
I’m a big fan of peated scotch, Ardbeg, Laphroaig, Bowmore, etc. recently noticed that Conemarra made a peated whiskey…pretty good.
IMO…a great blended!
Go lower…R&R Reserve…with your eyes closed you’ll never know the difference.
Lots of talk about things I love[d]!
Bourbon is for plebeians and proletariats (I’m being s feather-ruffler there)
. Courvosier XO is my “well,” it only goes up from there (Delamain extra anybody?), nothing touches pre-civil-war/pre-phylox French brandy (thanks Bern’s Steakhouse!)
Maybe that’s why I stopped drinking?
Terrapin rye always had a copper-taste to it, like my gums were bleeding profusely. The PBJ was a bad idea. I could never figure out if it was the south’s Water, Laced with Oak Ridge residue, but west beers are best.
In my oh-so-humble opinion: Good coffee must be less than 4 weeks off-roast. If there is any visible oil on the beans, it should be chucked. (For cred: I’ve roasted on a few different roasters, my favorite being a 25lb San Franciscan. Runner-up was the Vintage Probat 45, a monster! Had many a good times on the SF’n batch-roaster as well)
try Lagavulin.
Trust me, I’m Scottish.
I confess I haven’t had Scotch in years. For some reason I took to drinking very expensive scotch when I was living in a shithole apartment in one of the richest cities in the country.
I’m not really sure why, but it definitely had something to do with the unbelievable selection at the local liquor store.
Glenrothes, fuhgehduhbowdet.
I like Lagavulin, Top Shelf, no doubt. I always have a bottle in the cabinet. It’s $85-$100 a bottle here, I can drink the others I mentioned at less than half that. I can get Highland Park 12 for about $35, IMO it covers a great deal of ground at that price.
holy shit; that’s a pricey dram (note - when you have a whiskey you must refer to it as a “dram”).
Highland Park’s another great choice.
‘e’, huh? I thought you were better than that.
If I want cheap scotch, I’ll typically settle for Glenfiddich 12. Most restaurants/bars have it. I’d much prefer Oban if I’m out though.
AH FUCK
Hoist by my own petard.
Secret’s out. I’m not really Scottish.
I’m not a big Irish Whiskey fan, but this one is a definite favorite.
*Ive only had the peated
In my cabinet:
Jack Daniel’s
Tullamore Dew
Jameson
Any are fine on ice. (After all, I’m not a Neanderthal)
There is also Gin and Vodka in my cabinet. Gin and Tonics are a refreshing summer drink (like 7-up) and very fucking dry Martini’s are a perfect warmer-up-er in cooler times.
I was a craft beer snob for a long time. I love chocolaty and mocha-y stouts and porters. But the industry (at least locally) has moved away from those and more toward hoppy-as-fuck IPA’s and that sour shit. I’ve lost my taste for the whole craft beer movement.
If you’re a fan of Pendleton, give Wyoming Whiskey out of Kirby, WY a shot, they’ve got some pretty good stuff as well, all small batch type whiskey, won a couple tasting awards here and there, good stuff.
Alright, next time someone asks me what meatheads talk about when we’re not talking about meathead stuff, I’m going to say pokemon and alcohol.
At every opportunity. When I tried it I finally found what I’d imagined scotch whisky should taste like.
