OK, here’s one: I started training in 2010 because my then girlfriend wanted to get fit for her cousin’s wedding. I tagged along. Guess what I started with. Go on, guess. Bodypump (for maybe two weeks, then I went straight to the barbell). Ex stopped going after about a month. Since then I haven’t gone more than five days without some kind of training.
Well your Mrs should thank that particular ex… or curse her for exposing you to the iron addiction. …depends how she feels about your time at the gym, I guess.
I think it’s perfectly possible, even desirable, to lose fat and gain muscle at the same time. My scale weight is up and my belt has gone down a notch and I haven’t even been lifting the last couple of weeks I’ve been so busy (unless you count moving around heavy stuff at work)
p.s. I’m gonna try the arthur lift at some point. I’ve got to find some way of solving my lack of stands problem.
So in my old gym, there was only one squat rack “gasp”
anyway, one day im in there and these two kids are doing barbell curls in the rack. 65lbs total if i recall. A regular comes in, mid 30s fella who wasn’t necessarily jacked but had that whole “grown man strength” look going on. Well he waited around the squat rack for a while, growing visibly more and more frustrated. Finally I see him go over to a deadlift platform immediately across from the squat rack, and do just that. Clean, Push press, and catch on the back. Worked up to something like 275 for a set of 10, before the kids finished up with the rack and he went on to use it for his regular squat workout.
I was seriously impressed
As of late unfortunately I have familiarized myself with the You tuber Jason Blaha and all I have got to say is…(saying the name is making me feel ill)

There is no way in fuck this guy would be taken serious out side of you tube…Im not even sure what he has actually achieved that warrants the following he has garnished. From what I understand he has No formal education regarding fitness… Not sure if he has even trained or trains anyone that have achieved anything. And keeping it real … IMO he would be hard press making a huge impression in state level meets in several drug tested feds. Lets also be honest that he pushes the whole fake natty stuff as away of making himself look more impressive since any one whom is stronger or more physically impressive than himself " obviously" are on something or so he says. Hell I could mention a whole list of other things that just floors me regarding this guy.
But somehow this guy has people that follow him and defend him… are peoples standards that freaking low? Hell looking at the archives on here I have seen several beginners mentioning using his ICF5x5 program. So basically his fan base or nut huggers are made up of beginners and the type of guys whom havent really achieved their goals and use the roid excuse why someone is better than they are.
But luckily it seems his popularity is falling off due too several things… I hope to God he fades into obscurity .

I watch him as a guilty pleasure. Seeing him give pistol instruction with the posture and form of a dog dropping a deuce is especially funny. And nothing says “tactical” like having a little flashlight pinned too your shirt!
I’ve done this before (not with 275!).
I got as close as I could get to the rack and slightly in their way. Got up to 155 I think before they finally understood wtf I was doing. They finished their curls in the other corner of the gym.
I’m not a dick either!
Kids and stupid people eat him up for some reason. He’s flat out bat shit crazy.
His Ice Cream workout has been on M&S for years.
His hatred towards people who are stronger than him pisses me the fuck off to be honest. I used to watch some of his shit and agreed with some, but in the past year or two he’s became a hugeee blowhard and dumbass. Not to mention he’s not in good shape and has that dumbass green screen.
When I first started training in my garage I had a barbell but no rack. It was funny, my hang cleans and front squats improved quite a bit.
Having seen quite a fair bit of problematic beginner threads on T-Nation where said beginner has to deload at 100-ish lbs on the squat and blah blah everything hurts, I’m a hard gainer, I’ve horrible genetics and I give up.
I’ve always thought maybe training shouldn’t be on their list of priorities whatsoever. It’s the 21st century, they can always do something else to improve themselves. Such as being more intellectual, making more money, etc. If someone is really committed to improving themselves physically, complaining about their shortcomings simply isn’t the way.
Physical improvement isn’t the be all end all.
Not flaming: How much of that whining is true genetic inability to lift (joints/low T). How much of it is just being a wimp?
Successful goal oriented behavior and delayed gratification are rare among the population.
Doing things that hurt is even rarer still.
Allot of people like the IDEA of lifting and building a killer physique, but when the rubber meets the road they don’t want it bad enough.
To me, whining is basically ranting taken to an extreme frequency. The occasional rant is perfectly fine, everyone needs an outlet.
The difference between ranting and being normal(can’t think of a better way to phrase this) is basically…
Ranting/whining is when you’re not looking for a solution, you’re just looking for people to listen to you and most likely, agree with you.
Being normal(still can’t think of the proper term) is when you identify your problem and you seek a solution and your actions follow through on said solution. In this day and age, the solution is pretty much one google search away. Too many people aren’t following through based on their actions.
Noooo!!! He’s an endless source of entertainment.
From what I’ve seen, this is a problem with their mindset. It doesn’t matter what they do. The system will always be rigged against them.
Agreed. With the new surge of lifters, who spend a majority of their gym time making social media posts about lifting, I see two outcomes:
-
People just lower their standards. They enter physique or bikini competitions, look like shit, and expect positive feedback regardless. The other day I saw someone filming his buddy doing shrugs with 225. Apparently that is where we are right now. Everyone is praised for minimal effort and after a year, become “fitness experts.”
-
People jumping on a gram of test within the first year of lifting.
