Another day another dollar. But seriously, went well. I was happy with squats, even though I went back to the belt. Switching to 5x3 is the best idea for cleans. I had to cut it short, or rather speed it up to get home on time.
I’m not thrilled with the weight gain, but I’m also optimistic since my belt size has stayed the same. This WILL be an on-going battle. I want to gain muscle. I’m not interested in gaining much more weight.
Picked up my first strongman implement today. Large truck tire. Not that big, weighs about 50 lbs. I think I’m going to use it for … tire drags, sprints, and whatever else you use tires for in training.
After doing a little research, the good dip belts cost from $40-50. So, I’m going to try ot make my own courtesy of Home Depot.
I have followed your Rippetoe log for awhile now. I was so impressed that I started doing Rippetoe’s too. I have to say that I dig the workout scheme and have seen great improvements in my strength.
Question for you on Front Squats: What do you do when you miss a rep? Do you have a spot or do you dump the weight on the ground?

Thanks, I appreciate it.
Failing … I haven’t yet [knocks on wood]. I have come up short on other exercises, just not squats. Maybe it is fear that prevents me.
I have seen video clips of where you would just dump it forward. My equipment is most likely crap. I would expect the bar to bend at the very least. I’m not in the market of purchasing a new bar. We also don’t have bumper plates.
Anywho, I’d like to think I know my body/muscles pretty good. I know my limit. If I don’t think I can get the next rep safely, I won’t attempt it. Again, luckily this has not happened with the squats yet.

Thanks Dude. Appreciate the feedback. I will stay tuned.
New mile marker with deadlifts. Man I owned those. Lower back feels like steel. I’m liking not using a belt. My plan is to keep upping by 20 lbs. Eventually that will slow. My motivations is other members. They are dling WAY more than me with lower squat and bench numbers. I need to play catch-up and then some. My goal is to be at 450 by the end of the year. Realistic.
Little bummed about having to use the belt with the squat though. I’m really interested at what my back squat numbers would be. They have to be much more. The second set of squats was a dirty little whore. Got mentally pumped, and just rode the wave of set three. I just keep thinking, I have done so much more not that long ago. Still 30 lbs off.
My wife just gave me the speech again. The dreaded speech. “You look like a gorilla. Why are you doing this to yourself? Don’t you care about what I find attractive? Obviously you’re just being selfish and doing what you want to do.”
My response. “Well I’m training for strength. I’m not trying to get bigger. It takes a while for gains in size when training for strength.” I really have no defense. I need to work on that
I have an idea about your dipping belt, or lack of. I just use a thin rope and put it around me and hang a 10kg or 15kg weight on it. It was just a piece of rope that was on floor of the gym. Might be of some use for you since you couldn’t find a dipping belt.
About the wife, everybody hears that. Yesterday I was exited that I did a easy triple with 130kg in the deadlift. My girlfriends reply was, maybe you should have spent that time doing situps
Awesome job on the deads, Dude! I have no doubt you’ll hit 450 this year.
My wife is kind of the same way with my goals. I tell her I want to get as large as my genetics will allow, while remaining aesthetically balanced. She doesn’t get it, and has expressed how she doesn’t think she’ll find that level of “buffness” as attractive. I think it’s something pretty much every married man who lifts has to deal with.

I try to emphasize the health benefits when discussing lifting with my wife. I let her know how much better I feel since I started (not just physically either). Also, she’s come to realize, that no matter what I lift, I’m never gonna look anything like Dorian Yates (for better or worse).
It’s funny that so many people assume that if you start lifting you are gonna end up looking like the top pros, but if you do any other sport ppl laugh at the suggestion that you might attain the same lvl of the top competitors. Madness!
By the way, Dude, those DLs are fantastic. Keep it up!

LOL Yes, FTW! It’s not like you can explain, or even reason with them. I just try to act concerned and hold back my smile.

Thanks man. I’ve got a long way to go to catch up with the big dogs. I feel my deadlift so far behind for my size.

I know, I know. It takes a long time and lots of hard work to look like a ‘muscle monster.’ They don’t get it. Paraphrasing, she thinks that big muscles look ‘icky’.

My wife has used the exact same terminology. Then I show her pictures of the type of physique I’m going for, and she goes “mmmmm.” She’s just getting into lifting (I got her “Modern Rules of Lifting For Women”), and is convinced she’ll bulk up too much if she stays lifting for a long time. sigh At least she understands the monstrous proportions only come after years and years and YEARS of serious training, but still…
I have learned a lot in just one workout. Thanks to Darwin (I don’t remember who originally suggested the idea, but he reminded me) I jumped 10 lbs on my squat since Wednesday.
Why you ask? Because of one set and one rep in my warm-up. It has been suggested to do one rep with a weight higher than your working set. So I tried. I did 275 once. I actually could have done more. That was enough for me to skip 260 and go right to 265.
I’m also proud of my clean numbers. I did 5x3 instead of 3x5, makes a world of difference. I started fatiguing at the end. Still got all sets and reps. I had another 20 lbs left in me. I don’t plan on stalling or rather slowing down by 10 lb increments until probably 225. That would be nice. I must also be getting better at cleans.
I bought my dip belt tonight. Not just any dip belt, a man’s dip belt. Cost about $16 total. I’ll post pics up soon. It’s very manly. All will be jealous of its manliness. It also reminds me of Rampage Jackson. I think I’ll wear it when he fights next.
Satisfying workout overall. The 295 definitely made the 275 seem light. The reality is that I could have done 6-8 more reps with the 295. That’s always nice.
Deadlifts were a beast. I had just enough grip to do the single. All straps after that. I think only a 10 lb increase is in the cards for next time.
Dips. First workout with me new “belt”. I added 25 lbs, because I wasn’t sure exactly how much to add. Did a couple of reps and decided to up the anty(sp). A good weight to have swinging between your legs. I was a little bummed at only getting 4 reps on the second set, but it was after an exhausting session.
The cool thing is that I remembered to take my video camera. I don’t know why I never thought of it before. So I will have clips of the squatting, deadlifts, and dips tomorrow.
