I’m not sure it was you who mentioned it, but do you find that by the time you come round to training ‘arms’ in a workout after your main exercises, you just have no enthusiasm?
I’m not sure if I’m the guy who said that originally, but that’s definitely how I feel. It’s good, I suppose; it means I’m putting a decent amount of effort into the part of training that counts for the most.
Some of my friends have been giving me shit about my arms recently, though. I usually challenge them to a pullup contest. Shuts em right up. I’m not the strongest guy in the world but the average “curler” in my gym doesn’t have shit on me.
Yeah definitely. I’m never going to dispute the importance of stuff like that if you’re trying to get bigger but if you’re just training for performance, besides stopping them being a ‘weak link’ or strengthening them specifically, then I can’t see the point.
Ha yeah I always like watching skinny/weak guys having a good ol’ arm day. I’m not going to knock people who are weak that come in and get stronger through proper training, but when you weigh 130 pounds the notion of an arm day seems a little daft. To me anyway.
yup. Earn your arm days, if you’re going to do them.
I used to avoid curls entirely, but Wendler says they’re important, so I’m doing them now. Apparently they can also help you avoid tearing your bicep if you pull deadlift with a mixed grip, which I do on the singles.
Squat:
205 x 5
235 x 5
270 x 4 (fail. Lost focus down in the hole. Never came back up).
(245 x 3) x 2
G’Morning: (95 x 10) x 5
DB shrugs mixed in
GHR: 10 x 3
Calves mixed in.
Not a bad day except for the squat thing. I think I might finish up this cycle before resetting. I think the miss was a fluke. I’m also training a lot later than usual which may have something to do with it.
I’ve decided to start lessening the work done before the primary, keeping it explosive. Also I’ll be adding a few low-rep sub-maximum sets after the primary three movements, just for a bit more volume on the strength work.

Strong numbers. Saw 65 pullups in one of your other posts… how strict is your form? Either I do them uber strict or I’m just being a pussy and not doing enough of them.

I do them as strict as I know how. I keep my ankles crossed to prevent anything that even looks like kipping. I’m following what Wendler says about doing a set of pullups between every pushing exercise set. I usually go for 8-12 per set, so I don’t drop to 5 or less by the end of the workout.
I think I’m going to start doing them with +25 lbs tomorrow and go back down to 50 reps or so.

Maybe I’m just being testicularly challenged with them then haha. Do you pause for a 1 count top and bottom? Not saying it’s necessary, but just for comparison’s sake.

Wendler talks a lot of sense doesn’t he?
He most definitely does. No, I don’t really pause. I come to a complete stop at the bottom so I’m not “bouncing” out of it. I’ve always been decent at pullups though, man. I’m just stronger at pulling.

What was your time?
On my last PT test? It was 13:32. I still beat the next guy buy about 15 seconds, which makes me think something was wrong with the new course they used, as in maybe it was too long. I don’t think my whole squad had a shitty day all at once.

All that squatting must be slowing you down…
But seriously, from what you say it’s more likely that the course was too long.
