The Downward Spiral

Day 55:

Early morning (3am). Shadowboxing, jumprope. 12 rounds.

Day 54:

OHP:
115 x 5
130 x 5
150 x 6 (Wanted about 2 more. Wasn’t happening).

Bench:
(175 x 10) x 4. 155 x 10.

DB Row:
(100 x 10) x 5.

Delt complex with curls worked in.
Also worked pullups in between all pushing exercises. Got 64 total.

I’m really feeling the lack of sleep. They have me on about 5 to 6 hours a day, and then I get up and have about 2 hours to get gym work done before work starts up again. I’ve been sore for a lot longer than usual.

Day 52:

Clean:
145 x 3
165 x 3
185 x 3

Squat:
215 x 3
245 x 3
275 x 4 (ugly there at the end)

Dead: (225 x 10) x 5 (had to do the last set belted, which I avoid. My back was not having it today, and my hamstrings wouldn’t “wake up” and do their fair share of the work).

Hack squat:
90 x 10
180 x 10
230 x 10
230 x 8.

Calves stuff worked in there.

What happens at day zero? Oh, and do you reset every clean from the floor rather than from a hang?

Day zero = 100 days sober. I don’t really know what happens. I’m just going to reevaluate things from there.

Yeah, I reset every clean from the floor. It’s hard to tell if the cleans have really been bringing much to the table. I’m sure my form sucks. I’m going to keep going with them at least for the rest of the 100 days, though.

I’ve been doing box jumps at the beginning of leg day for activation as well. I recommend it.

New tattoo. “Art is Resistance.”

Day 50 (Halfway)

Began with some Parkour stuff today. Jump to roll, vaulting, etc. Just something I’m messing around with.

Bench:
190 x 3
215 x 3
245 x 5

OHP:
(90 x 10) x 5

Shrug and Pull (140 x 10) x 5

Delts and Bicep misc.

Later, Ab wheel. 12 x 3

Congrats on the fight. Dig that tat. Is that your idea, or did you see that somewhere? My next one’s a quote from Lincoln- “Things may come to those who wait, but only what’s left by those who hustle”.

Thanks man.

I’ve never heard that before. Lincoln has to be one of my favorite Americans of all time.

The “Art is Resistance” Flag is actually a piece of album art from “Year Zero.”

D’oh. Thought it looked familiar, haha. Yeah, Lincoln, Sam Clemens and Churchill are probably the 3 most quotable dudes of all time to me. You plan on fighting again?

I’d like to. I think I have a lot to make up for after my first fight. I need to find a coach and a training partner first.

Day 49

Muay Thai:

6 rounds heavy bag.
3 rounds shadowboxing.
3 rounds sliprope foot drills.

I’ve been cutting the rest period down to about 40 seconds during my sessions.

Day 48

Dead:
300 x 3
345 x 3
385 x 3

Something is wrong here. My deadlift is declining rapidly. For some reason the last few sessions I’ve been feeling it almost solely in my back. I don’t think the 5 sets of 10 assisstance on the deadlift is working for me. I think it might be reinforcing poor form. I’m going to drop it for awhile, maybe replace it with GHRs, and see if that helps.

Squat: (185 x 10) x 5. Felt brutal but good.

Good Mornings: (105 x 10) x 3
Ham curls: 10 x 3 at whatever weight.
Calves worked in.

Do you mean you’re going to drop deadlifting completely or just the 5 x 10 assistance?

How good is your form would you say?

I’m possibly the opposite to you in that I tend to feel higher reps (10+) more in my back and lower reps (1-3) more in my glutes and hamstrings.

Maybe try trap bar deadlifts as an assistance? They involve significantly more legs than conventional.

Oh I was just going to drop the assisstance in the 5 x 10 scheme. Trap bar is a good idea, but I don’t think my gym has one. I’ve noticed lately that I’m severely lacking in speed where deadlift is concerned, so I might do 5 or 10 sets of speed pulls instead.

I definitely used to feel the lower reps in the legs, but this feeling it in the back thing is kind of a new development. I’ll let you know if I figure it out.

Day 47 (two days ago)

OHP:
115 x 5
130 x 5
150 x 6

Bench: (170 x 10) x 5

Some other shit I can’t remember.

Day 46 (yesterday)
60/60’s. 15.

Day 45 (today)

Jumps

Clean:
175 x 5 (whoops)
175 x 3
195 x 1

Squat:
230 x 5
260 x 3
290 x 1 (Went for two, pinned in the hole. haha.)

Today felt pretty shitty, but I still got a squat PR, so good for me.

Snatch (seemed like the only thing available in the gym):
95 x 3
115 x 3
165 for 5 singles.

Going back to the gym tomorrow to do some proper leg stuff. Probably more squatting, some deadlifting. I was on a time crunch today and really wasn’t feeling it.

nice going, I’m only 90 lbs behind now…

oh, and if snatch was the only thing available in my gym, I wouldn’t complain!

haha. Snatch jokes never get old.

Shit, you’re catching up. Awesome man. Maybe someday I’ll catch up to your run time. Probaby not.

Day 42

30/45s x 14

PM

Jerk:
135 x 2
155 x 2
185 x 2
185 x 2

Bench:
225 x 5
245 x 3
265 x 3

OHP: (90 x 10) x 5

Shrug and Pull (135 x 10) x 3

Delts and bis misc.

60 pullups.

I’m not sure it was you who mentioned it, but do you find that by the time you come round to training ‘arms’ in a workout after your main exercises, you just have no enthusiasm?

I’m not sure if I’m the guy who said that originally, but that’s definitely how I feel. It’s good, I suppose; it means I’m putting a decent amount of effort into the part of training that counts for the most.

Some of my friends have been giving me shit about my arms recently, though. I usually challenge them to a pullup contest. Shuts em right up. I’m not the strongest guy in the world but the average “curler” in my gym doesn’t have shit on me.
