The Downward Spiral

Fight Night.

This is my corner man and me, with the trophy I won.

My mug. Hamburger helper.

Day 65:

Interval running. 60 seconds fast, 60 seconds of walking x 12. Walked a mile after. Felt good to be outside. I need to stop being such a cave-dweller. Only going to get worse when I start the graveyard shift here in a bit.

Fucking awesome!

Thank you. I learned a lot. I actually got pretty fucking lucky. My opponent caught me a few times in the first with this left hook that felt like a battering ram on my noggin. I moved around a lot and gassed him, then got the TKO in the second.

Day 64:

Deload Week

Clean: (135 x 5) x 3

Squat:
135 x 5
165 x 5
195 x 5

GHR: (BW x 8) x 3

Leg Press: (Relatively low weight x 10) x 3

Calves and Abs.

I’ve been cutting sleep short the last two nights so I could sleep most of the day today. Tonight I start my first graveyard shift. This should be interesting; I feel a bit like I’m in shock from the new sleep schedule.

Day 63 (Yesterday):

Felt antsy so I went to the gym to work on my O-lifts. I messed around with the clean, the jerk and the overhead squat. Also did some jumping. Broke a sweat. Felt good.

Day 62:

all day urban combat training. Freezing cold. Got shot with a lot of chalk rounds. Breathed in a lot of smoke.

Day 61: Boxing

Day 60: Early AM (around 0200) workout. Pushups, pullups, and about 6 sprints.

PM -

Cleans:
135 x 5
155 x 5
175 x 5

Squats:
200 x 5
230 x 5
260 x 6 (goddamnit).

Dead: (225 x 10) x 5

Good Mornings: (95 x 10) x 3
Hack squat: (140 x 15) x 3
Calves worked in.

Thank man. Haven’t heard from you in a stretch. How’s it going?

Yeah it’s going well, although I’m training a little differently to what I was. Thanks for asking man, are you still posted in Germany?

Yep, still here. Will be for quite awhile I think. What did you change up in your training? I’m thinking about starting Smolov sometime next month to fix my squat.

Are you enjoying it, on the whole, I mean? As for my training, at the moment I’m spending more time in the gym pursuing strength and size before it’s a necessity that I spend most of my training time running. What do you mean fix your squat - it’s not exactly shit, is it? Hope that goes well though, my squat blows huge balls too.

It’s not bad. I’m working 12 on, 12 off right now, which really sucks, and it’s the graveyard shift, which sucks more. On my days off I have nothin to do, because the city shuts down except for bars and clubs. I can’t wait to work a regular 9 to 5 job again. Never thought I’d say that.

As for the squat, it just bugs me that I don’t really squat more than I bench, which I absolutely should. I need to add about another 100 lbs to it before I start treating it like my other lifts.

I know what you mean about strength and size. When I got out of basic training, I was shriveled. We’re talking 170 lbs at about six foot two inches. I could barely do six pullups. Squatting 135 was hard. It took me awhile to build back up from there. This is my advice: if your basic was anything like mine (very cold, very long days with very little sleep), then EAT EVERYTHING. They had the calories posted up in the cafeterias for all the food available. If they do that at yours, find the highest calorie food and eat all of it you can.

Day 59: Boxing. Did a couple rounds of footwork to start off this time. Tied my handwraps around the bags to make a slip cord. Then I did 3 rounds of ropework and 4 rounds on the bag.

Day 58

Bench:
135 x 5
155 x 5
175 x 18 (Okay, I reset a little too far. I’m going to take the midpoint between this max and the previous and use that).

OHP: (95 x 10) x 5

Pullups between every set above. Reckon I did around 64.

Shrug and Pull: (145 x 10) x 5

A1) Tricep pushdown w/rope thing
A2) DB curls
3 rounds. Only doing arm work because Wendler says I’m supposed to. Not happy 'bout it.

Calves stuff in between sets.

I’m happy with the volume I’ve added the last few days. It always takes a bit of extra mental effort to get in the last few exercises, but I’m thinking it’s going to pay off. I’m upping my calories, and my appetite has increased. This usually happens when I change my sleep cycle though, so that could be part of it.

Smolov has been bugging me ever since I read about it. It’s digging at the back of my mind, like an itch I’m going to have to scratch. Let’s finish up this cycle. If my squat isn’t stalled out, I’ll put it off awhile longer. I want to make sure I have my sleep down first, and it might require more recovery than I can manage while doing Army PT.

Turns out, on the bench, above, I was looking at my Clean numbers. That’s why it was ridiculously light. Stupid. Fuck my insomnia.

I imagine everyone is a rake at the end of basic, it’s afterwards when it’s the time to build back up again, I guess. What’s your current max bench and squat? There are plenty of guys I know who can’t squat what they bench ha!

My last squat was 260 x 6, and my last bench was 260 x 4. I need my squat to be about 100 pounds heavier.

Day 57 (Yesterday). Had a suprise PT test. It was fucking horrible. They made us run into and around traffic. I’ve never ran a worse time. Still beat my whole unit though.

Day 56

Dead:
280 x 5
325 x 5
365 x 5 (Goddamnit).

Squat: (185 x 10) x 5

G’Mrnings: (95 x 10) x 3

Hamstring curl: 3 sets 8-10.

Calves worked in.
