Awesome you got your sleep down. That is huge.
I was into combatives for awhile, actually. I agree, the program has a lot of potential. Unfortunately, it’s just like any other martial art program, where it depends entirely on the instructor. Here on my base, some jerk gave all the soldiers ju jitsu blue belts after they became level 2 certified. I thought that was a frickin joke. I’ve rolled with a lot of them, too, and they’re pushovers. A bjj blue belt should be able to submit me without too much effort.

There is a team here called Team Choko. I guess they’re a big deal. I worked with them a couple of months, but the instructor became frustrated when I deployed, and then had to go TDY for awhile, and it got to the point where he really didn’t want me there anymore. Bummer.

Martial Arts is going to have to wait until I get out of the soldiering life, I suppose.

On the other hand, there’s an amateur boxing tournament this weekend. I’m thinking about signing up just for laughs and see what happens.
Do the fight!

What’s urban combat training?

Urban combat training is kicking in doors, clearing rooms, how to tactically assault villages…that sort of thing. It’s a decent way to spend your day, but it gets a little monotonous.

Day 76

PM:

OHP:
120 x 3
135 x 3
155 x 6 (Marked improvement)

Bench: (165 x 10) x 5. For the first three sets I tried pausing at the bottom. After that I was so kecked I went back to touch-and-go.

DB Row: (90 x 10) x 5 per arm.

Day 75 (Yesterday): 40 minutes of shadowboxing and jumprope.

Day 74

Clean:
150 x 5
170 x 3
190 x 2

Squat:
225 x 5
250 x 3
275 x 3 (hurrah. Progress.)

Dead:
(225 x 10) x 5. I decided to up the weight here, because the squatting went well today. I definitely took more time between sets, but I got them all pounded out.

This marks the beginning of the end of another cycle. I tend to think of the final week as the true test of whether or not you should progress or regress on the next cycle. I hope the next few workouts go as well as this one did. I’m nervous about the upcomming deadlift. I’ve never pulled over 400 for more than one rep…let’s go for 3.

Sometimes I get so anxious before my workouts these days that I almost throw up.

Cool log, great name. Saw 'em in late '05/early ‘06, easily one of the best shows I’ve seen. As someone who also drinks too much, it’s good to see you take initiative and get it under control. Keep killin’ it in here bud.

Thanks Flash. I really appreciate it. I would kill to see NIN live.

I’m at a point where I’ve leveled out, as far as the sobriety goes, and it isn’t hard to say no to a beer anymore. Some days are…easier than others, but that’s life.

Again, thanks for the motivation.

Day 73

PM:

Boxing. 5 rounds heavy bag. 2 rounds shadow. 3 rounds jumprope.

Situps. 50 x 3.

I saw some of the guys who are going to be competing in this upcomming tournament. They look like they box quite a bit. I’m counting on an uncomfortable experience this Saturday.
If anyone asks me what happened I’m going to say I took a dive in the 1st.

At the risk of telling you what you already know, I find keeping eye contact at all times to be the most useful tip I’ve ever been given - I always get hit when I break eye contact, especially near the end of the round.

Thanks man. Little things like that might buy me a little more time on my feet. Almost didn’t recognize you without your pic.

Day 72

AM:

Sprints. 10.

PM

Bench:
215 x 5
245 x 3
275 x fail (NOOOOO. WHY WHY WHY WHY?). I don’t know what the fuck happened here. I’ve hit this weight before. Today it just…pinned me, no questions asked. I guess resetting couldn’t hurt. Bummer man.

OHP:
(85 x 10) x 5

Shrug and Pull:
(145 x 10) x 5

Pullups (Neutral):
10, 10, 7, 8.

Pushups:
35, 25, 15. And then fuck it. I was so pissed off at this point I wanted to spit all over all the gym equipment. I’m going to take it out on my squad tomorrow because I’m in charge of PT and everyone should pay for my failure. Yeah.

Don’t worry about cycles, if the weight is still going up keep adding 5 lbs, but cycle just cuz the print out says to.

As for the miss don’t sweat it, look at all the cardio you are doing. The heavy bag kills my bench.

Good point. I remember when I first started hitting the bag back in college I wondered what happened to my 190 max on the bench. hahaha. I think a piece of the equation is also my diet at this point. I’ve been a real frickin queen about it lately. After this PT test I have coming up in November I won’t have to worry about my weight for awhile and I’ll start eating like a man again.

Day 71

AM:

I ran squad PT. This, I must share.

I decided we were going to do hill sprints, and then on my way out the door I eyed my medicine ball. on an impulse I grabbed that and took it with me. There were six of us running the hill. I decided that we would take turns doing the 3-rep sets with the medicine ball, and if you didn’t beat the man with the ball you didn’t get a rest period after that set.
We ran 15 sets of 3 for a total of 45 repititions. I, myself, was jelly-legged at the end of the workout. It was good.

PM:

Light intensity bag work and jumprope.

Day 70:

AM:

Stupid squad PT. Someone else was in charge so we did 45 minutes of ab work. BULLSHIT.

PM:

Dead:
325 x 5
365 x 3
400 x 3 (Really important PR for me. I have rarely felt better about a lift).

Squat: (175 x 10) x 3.

I backed off at this point. I don’t want dead legs on Saturday, and I’m still sore from yesterday morning’s hills.

So tomorrow I’m fighting. Today I got the list of weight classes and found out I will be in the superheavy class unless I do something about it. So…I had a bowl of oatmeal and a protein shake around noon. Haven’t had anything to eat or drink since. Spent about two hours in the gym jumproping, jogging and biking. I’m down to about 202, so I still have a pound to drop. Down 5 already from the start of the day. The weigh in tomorrow can’t come soon enough. I’m so fucking thirsty. Tomorrow I’m going to get up and jog a bit, go to the weigh in, and then hopefully take an IV to rehydrate. I’ve got a buddy who’s a medic. hehe.

1-0.

Retiring.

Hahahahahahaha! Time to relapse.

Day 66

AM: Sprints. 10. 60 second rest.

PM:
OHP:
125 x 5
140 x 3
160 x 3

Bench: (165 x 10) x 5.

All OHP and Bench mixed with pullups.

DB Row: (95lb x 10) x 5. Mixed with calves stuff.
