What kind of running shoes did you get?[/quote]
Aasics. I’m extremely flatfooted, and they tend to have the support I need. It’s hard to find a pair that don’t look goofy, though.

Day 85 (two days ago):
Deadlift:
270 x 5
315 x 5
350 x 7 (I had to stop and put this in perspective for myself. I started deadlifting last year and in September of that year I set a PR of 350 x 1. Look at me now, I guess.)
Squats:
(165 x 10) x 5
Experimented with Good Morning form. I’ve never really used this exercise and will start incorporating it from here on out.
Calves, etc.
Day 83:
OHP
110 x 5
125 x 5
145 x 7
Bench
(165 x 10) x 5
Kroc Rows: 90lb. DB x 30 per arm.
Delt side raises: 100 reps with two 5lb dbs. Cramped like a tennis pro at a press conference.
Work schedule has been destroying me. 13 on 11 off. Fuuuuuck. Oh well, I suppose there’s a war on and whatnot.
Nice overhead pressing. Ever got a bodyweight one out?

Thank you.
Not yet man. That’s the goal. I’d like to hit that by March or so. We’ll see. Overhead press always seems to stagnate around 185 with me.

What model? I’m also flat footed. Must be a fighter thing, every guy in my gym is flat footed too.
Nice deadlifts, 1 pound, 1 rep its all progress in the right direction.

Thanks Larry. Yeah, progress is progress, but the heavy pull definitely makes you feel more dangerous. Maybe I’ll hit 450 before the end of the year.
The model is called Duomax I believe. I suppose it could be a fighter thing, definitely. Part of me thinks maybe it’s because I was so heavy when I was younger (I was a fat boy). It’s never held me back in any way. I wish I could rightly call myself a fighter.

I suppose, technically, you are/you can?

Eh, probably more so than the average guy, but we don’t compare ourselves to the average around here. I have four years of TKD from high school (it would have been worthless but I had a very cruel and practical instructor), a year of trained boxing in college, and then some MMA from my time in the army. I think the bottom line of the matter, though, is that I’m not sparring on a regular basis right now. You really need to cultivate the fighting mentality to be any good. I’d get my arse handed to me in most street fights, I’d imagine.
Day 82 (Yesterday)
AM: Sprints x 10.
PM: Ropes course (“Mandatory fun” by order of the company commander).
Day 81
Clean:
140 x 3
160 x 3
180 x 3
Squat:
205 x 3
235 x 3
260 x 5 (I really, really should have gone for 6 here. I’m kicking myself for that one. I think I’m way too timid with squatting).
Deadlift: (210 x 10) x 5
Calves misc.
I’ve lost a few pounds since I quit drinking. The difference in the stability of my mood is also dramatic. I’m hoping to hit bodyweight x 1.5 (about 310) in the squat by the end of the year. I’m going to keep it steady though.

Lol I think most people would. I don’t think it’s the same as martial arts where there are rules against knives, ground and pound, and 20 other guys jumping in. I don’t know how you feel about it, but in my (limited) experience the best bet is to have applicable skill in a martial art to fall back on but on the whole to just avoid trouble and concentrate more on defusing things and surviving rather than looking for shit.
What distance do you sprint and is it on an incline? I usually sprint a 75 - 100m uphill after a gym session but it only takes 3 or 4 sprints and I’m knackered.

I agree with you. Always run first, if for no other reason than the legal hurdles you would have to jump after a fight are horrible. I spent a night in jail after a fight. I don’t want to do that again. Moreover, I’m in a foreign country, and the polizei (sp) don’t like the soldiers very much (I can’t blame them. We pretty much take up all their time).
It’s hard to say how far I sprint because I don’t have a track or anything. I have my hill workout, and that’s a pretty short distance, maybe 30 meters or so, but the incline is intense and the ground is loose. I try to do it about 30 times and really focus on quick turnover.
For longer sprints, I probably go about 60 meters or so. I’m trying to make my stride as long as possible and kick the ground as hard as I can. I love sprinting. Nothing winds you faster and, as far as survival goes, it’s one of the most practical exercises. You feel like you’re flying after you hit the finish line and start easing up. Also it’s a better wake-up than a pot of coffee in the morning.
Day 79
AM: Muay Thai
4 rounds heavy bag work
3 rounds jump rope
2 rounds shadow boxing
100 situps.
My sleeping issues have cleared up. Getting 7 or 8 hours isn’t an issue anymore.
PM
Decided to fuck around with the snatch before getting started. Warmed up with the bar. then:
95 x 3
135 x 3
155 x fail (x fail < dividing by zero).
155 x 1
Bench:
200 x 3
230 x 3
260 x 4 (couldn’t find a spotter. The whole gym was empty. I was a little nervous on that last rep).
OHP:
(85 x 10) x 5. I need to crank this up in the next cycle. It burns hell out of my shoulders, but I think I can do better.
Shrug and Pull:
(155 x 10) x 2
(145 x 10) x 3. I wanted to get better rom with the pull, and stop using my hips as I tend to do.
Pullups, Neutral grip (close):
8, 8, 8, 7 (damnit. Grip was gone at this point).
Front Raise:
25lb. Plate x 100 (Uglier than a road-dead dog).
I’ve put on a couple pounds since I stopped drinking. I’ve leaned out noticably as well. My lesbian soldier friend tried to force-feed me a sandwich the other day. Ha. Small victories.

Nice one. How much emphasis do you put on your physique?

Well, I tell myself that I don’t care at all, but that’s bullshit. Everybody wants to look good. It’s not going to be my primary focus by any means. Goal is always to get stronger and faster.
Can you get into Army combatives? I’ve trained with the instructors from West Point, its MMA just wearing BDUs. It’s a legit program.
Awesome you got your sleep down. That is huge.

I was into combatives for awhile, actually. I agree, the program has a lot of potential. Unfortunately, it’s just like any other martial art program, where it depends entirely on the instructor. Here on my base, some jerk gave all the soldiers ju jitsu blue belts after they became level 2 certified. I thought that was a frickin joke. I’ve rolled with a lot of them, too, and they’re pushovers. A bjj blue belt should be able to submit me without too much effort.
There is a team here called Team Choko. I guess they’re a big deal. I worked with them a couple of months, but the instructor became frustrated when I deployed, and then had to go TDY for awhile, and it got to the point where he really didn’t want me there anymore. Bummer.
Martial Arts is going to have to wait until I get out of the soldiering life, I suppose.
On the other hand, there’s an amateur boxing tournament this weekend. I’m thinking about signing up just for laughs and see what happens.
Day 78 (yesterday)
AM: 30 hills routine
AM - PM: Urban combat training.
Day 77
Deadlift:
295 x 3
335 x 3
385 x 4 Bwahaha. I think you could have played a high E on my hammies during the last rep.
Squat: (175 x 10) x 5
Facepulls and Pullups
Calf junk.
So, this 100 rep shit was fun, but honestly there’s just too much DOMS for it to be worth whatever growth I might see. I think that, instead, I’m going to do more assistance work pertaining to my primary lifts.
Injury. Damnit.
Pulled right hip flexor while practicing my shots. I’m limping pretty good half the time, but It doesn’t seem to affect my lifting too much. I’m going to try to stay away from the running for a couple of days. Time to get out the jumprope.
