and were not allowed to march in the victory parade…
Today, hundreds, if not thousands of women are on the front line in Ukraine for the same reason Soviet women served- Desperation.
Russia is trying its VERY VERY hardest not to mobilise women because they know that it will be perceived as a signal that their regualr army is failing and cause literal riots not even an autocratic government will be able to silence without exorbitant cost.
IMO, it’s pretty dumb to be so stubborn because women can be extremely useful, especially in more modern conditions (e.g., my 5’2, 95lb friend who can’t lift 50lbs or run a mile could be just as deadly as a drone pilot as any man).
I also think that the glorification of war is dumb regardless of gender. Modern feminists seem to think that being drafted is an honour or something. From my perspective, no one should be drafted, BUT, if men are going to have to be drafted, women shouldn’t get a free pass even though a free pass is nice
It was both out of necessity and ideology. The Germans failed to plan for this when making manpower calculations in preparation for Operation Barbarossa. Women in combat was unthinkable to their society and ideology that underpinned it.
To point out the differences in ideology, at no point in the war did the Germans put women into combat. Not even in 1945, when the desperate nature of their situation far eclipsed any situation the Soviets found themselves in. Boys and old men, sure. Women? Absolutely not.
The success of the Soviet women snipers in particular were lauded. Their low survival rate, not so much.
The way you frame this is interesting, to include the exact example you chose to use.
Couldn’t the woman have just not been sexually engaged with a man whom she knew was not a father figure? That is responsibility too.
Of course there are men who bed women, promise many things, seem to be suitable partners and fathers, then they leave too. I won’t even act like this isn’t a thing.
No. I believe only those who are potentially subject to serve (ie having a stake in the outcome of their choices) have inherent citizenship rights. Having responsibility for your choices forces one to make better choices.
And that’s great. Except that social media narratives form cultural narratives; even traditional media narratives do this as I’m sure your aware.
In the US, war is a very small part of our lives and the political decisions that affect them. Why military specifically? why not base this on taxation?
It just seems like an odd hill to fight on to me. Women have a lot of societal responsibilities. So do men. A lot of women are dog shit. So are a lot of men.
Why do you keep going back to the men’s responsibility here? This is obviously the case, but if women are the gatekeepers of sex - why would she allow unfit men to impregnate her?
I believe everyone needs skin in the game. Acting in rational self interest is best promoted by having to deal with the consequences of your actions.
Maybe for those who care more about their children, sure. How many kids are being raised by tiktok these days though?
While those kids are unfortunately lost causes, that is a very large percentage of the population thinking the same narrative. I’m not saying that social media will change YOUR kids’ values, I’m saying that it will (and is) changing societal values.
Agreed, I don’t understand this either. Do I think you should contribute, yes. Of course. There are many ways to do this without the ability to serve or even through our overly taxed system, though.
Because tax laws are unreasonably forgiving for the 1% and unreasonably unforgiving for the middle and upper class.
Let’s say tax laws weren’t flawed - the 1% would not only be incredibly wealthy (powerful) but they would also be unimagineably powerful.
FWIW I also believe that folks without children should not be paying for or making decisions in local schools. I similarly believe that those who do not own land (and primarily reside in) a town, should not have a stake in most local election policies. This does not work for condensed cities like NYC or Manhattan, where no one owns land and everyone rents.
You keep saying these responsibilities are women’s, but I don’t see it that way. Men are not free from responsibility because women tend to be the gatekeepers of sex.
Because it’s 2024 not 1545, people have sex for fun and contraception doesn’t work or abortion is used instead.
I’m not arguing it’s right or wrong just that it’s both parties responsibility. Men don’t get a pass because woman says yes to sex.
Why do you think potential service in the armed forces is the only way to have skin in the game?
We’ll just have to agree to disagree here. I think SM influence is fleeting.
What is used to define up, across, and down, is it Socioeconomic status?
I imagine there’s already data on this? I think currently more often then not men and women marry roughly across. I think for previously generations this chart was accurate, but now that women earn as much or more and are earning more degrees then men we’ll see the inverse, but that’s just my thoughts on the matter. I don’t have anything to back that.
There is certainly hypocrisy is these movements/ideologies.
