The Boxing Thread III

Personally, I’d like to see a rematch. I don’t know if Foreman would be interested in one, but it’s a good fight and I’m sure people would like to see Foreman healthy through the entire fight. Not to mention that Foreman probably gained some fans by continuing to fight, so he and Cotto could most definitely get a good draw in NY. The worst thing about Cotto’s career at this point is Bob Arum will want to put him against Margarito.

Good news though, Bob Arum has put Pacquiao being open to testing within 14 days on the record. It seems like the fight will be made this time.

“So we want to put you up against this fighter… who you have no hope of beating… and who’s going to REALLY hurt you… but we figure if you’re well you might be able to take the punishment for 12 rounds…”
…wouldn’t be ecstatic if I was Yuri

The Pac thing is old news (not as regards Bob’s announcement, but Pac agreed to it himself a good while ago)… May then countered by saying the deal was testing all the way to the fight or nothing, that he wanted over 90% of the purse, that they dtermine the real winner via a push-up competition etc. etc.

Yuri Foreman’s wife Leyla Leidecker on Cotto fight: ‘Maybe I should punch the referee in his face’

She’s a legitimate argument, there’s no doubt about that. I just think Mercante did the right thing: he nor Foreman wanted to allow the fight to be stopped after the injury, Mercante obliged and allowed him to continue. I’m pretty sure Mercante also asked Foreman if he’d like to continue after his corner threw in the towel, Foreman was then allowed to continue. Only after being dropped by a punch did Mercante stop the fight and I feel it shows he’s willing to let Foreman fight but not get seriously injured.

Yuri Foreman? I thought you were talking about Pacquiao. Seriously though, this was good for Foreman. He showed his toughness by willing to fight with a bad knee and a lot of fight fans will respect it, he got a lot of exposure[this is definitely his biggest fight], and he’s the “what if?” factor working for him. I think he could take another Cotto fight but have it in MSG, make a career high 7 figure purse, and have a much closer fight.

Pacquiao “agreed” to testing within 14 days then denied making the comment, Bob Arum making it official makes the fight seem much more realistic. I’m thinking it’ll be in Vegas sometime in November.

Watched the Andre Ward - Allan Green fight last night as was really impressed by Ward. The whole tournament has been pretty good. Ward has to be considered the favorite but I could still see someone like Abraham taking it. I would love to see more tournaments like this.

ward is sick talented. wow. i think he is going to be a special fighter, we will see, time will tell.

Ward looks very very good. Seriously good. I think the Super Six has been a great tournament so far, save for Froch’s pissing and moaning about a home-town decision in Denmark.

I haven’t written off Kessler yet, that boy comes to bang but I’m not sure he has the tools to dismantle Ward. It’ll be fascinating to see who progresses to the semi finals.

Did I not tell all of you this?

Dude is the real deal, he already proved he’s dominating 168. [/quote]

I agreed with you then and I agree with you now! We New Jersians know are fight game! Cheers

Ward= FAST and ACCURATE. these two abilities will carry him far.

So Wlad will take Povetkin next. Yawn. no serious threats to him right now, even though i admit that ANYTHING can happen in a heavyweight prizefight.

The only big heavyweight fight out there now is a hopeful match between V.K. and Haye. barring Vitali knees back or shoulders do not disintegrate in training camp…it will be fun to watch the big man be motivated and pissed off for his last big fight against a guy he really wants to tear the head off of…lol

btw, anybody have any thoughts on Pavik moving up to 168? good, bad, indifferent?

I think it’ll be better for him, he’s having serious weight issues. The only problem I can see is having to eventually fight one of the Andres.

I don’t think Povetkin is experienced enough to take on one of the brothers, which is probably why Teddy Atlas has wanted to postpone the fight for as long as possible. I think he’ll do better than others, however I don’t think he’s clever enough to get past the jab of Wlad and become a serious threat.

ya, teddy atlas for the longest time was very very critical of the Klits, especially wlad, but now that he is actually gonna have one of his fighter face W.K., his tone has changed quite a bit. he basically said that they have some weaknesses, but their strengths “build a strong wall” around said weaknesses, and few people have the tools to break through that “wall” and expose them. he also said that facing either Klit in the ring “is a very difficult proposition” for any fighter or trainer.

I can’t say Atlas is wrong about that, with Wlad anyway. I don’t think Vitali really has any weaknesses though other than his age.

Im afraid i agree with you Irish, about Pavlik. I think one tough loss against a fast slick boxer like Martinez is no reason to abandon the Middleweight division. I think Pavlik does well against the majority of the middleweights out there. Hell, he did not lose that bad to Martinez.

Middle rounds he was actually winning the fight. It was his first fight after a LONG layoff due to severe medical issues…I dunno…who else here thinks he needs to dumb Lowe and get a better trainer/management team?

I think his loss to Martinez was a combination of things: a long layoff due to a hand injury and the cut worsening. I believe he could beat Martinez if they fought again, Pavlik did win whenever boxing with Martinez[four rounds straight] and he’s more power.

I can’t quite say if getting a new trainer could help him now, you can’t really change a fighter his age without rebuilding their career. A new trainer could add more depth to Pavlik but fighting at 168 will create its own problems, he should get a nutritionist and stay at 160. If he coupled that with a new trainer[who would work on his movement and combinations] he could live up to the hype that once surrounded him.
