I gotta say, it’s a relief to hear that sort of thing coming from a knowledgable lifter. For the most part the experience I’ve had when stating the difficulties I’ve had with some exercises is the whole “shut up and do it” mentality, for which reason I have kept at it and tried to tweak them to my advantage but still been unsuccessful. It’s good to know that there are some out there who have a more sensible ideology in regards to such things, so I appreciate your advice
Thank you.

Hey Brick,

Thanks for this post; great points. Question: what’s the reason for ramping up with the same “high” reps as you would with your all out blast set? For instance, with your example about the squat rep scheme, you could do an all out blast set with the same 8-10 reps using significantly higher weight if you ramped up with low reps (singles, doubles, triples) leading up.

Just wondering what your thoughts are on ramping up with high reps and “ending” the all out blast set with possibly lower weight.

-Sigil- I believe the reason for that is to prime your CNS for the required number of work reps. If I am understanding your question correctly.

If there any benefit for overhead pressing from different pin heights each set in a cage? eg Set 1: 5th Pin, Set 2 Move up 2 holes, Set3 Move up 1 hole etc…Or just don’t worry about it and keep going down to mouth and up?

Nice thread!

Is there any benefit to ramping every exercise or is it best to only ramp the prime exercise per body part?

You’ll have to ramp less on subsequent exercises.

Don’t feel shame in bumping this thread.

It’s obviously not getting stickied regardless of how many people think it should be. The site released their own program that they are planning on making a lot of money off of cus of the supps and your bible doesn’t promote it.

It’s a shame too because they say that IBB is for advanced trainees. What are the intermediates and beginners supposed to use??

!!! THIS !!!
LOL, I should get around to actually reading/watching some of the IBB stuff one of these days.
Judging by the number of logs, we have far more advanced people here than i thought
LOL!!!

Hahahahahahahahaha

HA!

Dude, careful, you might pull a muscle or slip a disc!

Sigil,

My reasons…

I do what the most successful people do. I’m not here to re-invent the wheel or waste time trying to figure out what works if there are hundreds or thousands of examples success.

You can ramp up however you like. I’ve ramped up with sets of reps lower than the rep range for the main set. Heck, I’ve even done exercises later in a work out with ONE ramp/“working warmup” set.

Dorian didn’t keep ramping up extensively for exercises later in a workout. For example, his calf workout had two exercises - standing and seated calf raises. He didn’t do any working warmup set for the seated calf raises. He’d warm/ramp-up extensively for the first and second exercises of a workout. From then on, he used minimal warmup/ramp-up sets.

I’m not saying that I follow everything guy says–or ANY guru or bodybuilder for that matter–but this is what makes the most sense to me.

With the whole rampup/warmup issue, I’ve been influenced the most by Skip Lacour, Ian King, Mike Mentzer, Matt Kroc, and Dorian Yates.

Right. If NO ONE successful does a certain thing, I ain’t doin’ it! I’m not saying it’s wise to follow cookie cutter or other people’s routines. But if a method isn’t used over decades, I let someone else try it out. If it works for a LARGE amount of people, I might try it.

“Not me, meng!”

I’ve seen Vic in person a few times at Bev Francis’ Powerhouse Gym.

One of my faves.

You get any tips from him?

Nah, I didn’t talk to him. The only pro I spoke to a few times at one of the gyms I used to go to is Desmond Miller.

From seeing videos of Vic, I think he trains like a jerkoff. But the bottom line is that what he does works for him. I once saw a few vids of him on You Tube and he appeared half asleep while lifting.

I see your points, thanks.

Another vote for a sticky.

This thread is just phenomenal. I just answered this big PM to a guy who asked me for advice (Aussie_Lifter), and basically covered a bunch of stuff that was in your first post Brick, when I could have just referred him to this thread, heh…

The programs I recommended were (he is a beginner):

  • Some type of upper/lower split which I think is great for many average guys (5/3/1, WS4B)
  • Yates 3-way split
  • IronAddicts Power-based routine, basically a 2-way split (however this is only 3x/week, IMO if someone is a beginner and wants to lift more frequently, I say let them have at it).
  • Cressey’s ‘Regular Guy Off-season Strength Program’… I think this can put a lot of meat on average guys, however you would need to alter some exercises for BBing purposes. It goes:
    Day 1: Full body
    Day 2: No lifting
    Day 3: Lower body
    Day 4: Upper body
    Day 5: No lifting
    Day 6: Full body
    Day 7: No lifting

I would sticky it.

I’m surprised many newbs haven’t been training like this already. I trained like this in my early years (14 years old) but really I didn’t gain because of my poor food intake. I was a newb on the diet end.
No, don’t sticky it whatever you do! If you sticky it, no one will read it!

You know that’s the sad truth. People never ever read stickies…
