The Bodybuilder Bunker

What new bunker? Alpha? That’s great and all, but some of us can’t post there. Not that I have lot to say at present, but I’d hate to see this thread just go away completely.
As long as people occasionally bump it, this thread won’t die. We do have lives outside of T-Nation to lead, so a slow down in post is bound to happen.

what are all of your thoughts and dosages on creatine/glutamine/bcaa’s?

What do you think about carb consumption during a workout?

What do you think about training in a gym w/out air conditioning in the summer time .vs. most gyms that do have AC? I do both and notice I lift heavier in the non-AC gym but don’t get a decent pump as I do in the AC gym. The amount of sweat is obvious…I think I probably burn more calories in the non AC gym. All of those can be factors in building your physique…

these are some things that can be debated…now go for it! lol

Glutamine? I had a discussion with one of our PhD candidates back in the day about how glutamine was good juju for our gut cells. I think it’s probably most useful for guys who are eating tons of food and abusing their GI.

I use a lot of creatine. 10-15 grams a day. I don’t pay attention to it really, I just try to take at least one 5g serving and not more than three.

I keep about 5g of bcaas and 5g creatine in a shaker next to my bed and I either wake up at night and take them or take it in the morning before breakfast. I also use a 70cc scoop of bcaas during my workout, however much that is.

When I’m not low-carbing I use about 20g of carbs during workout with a scoop of whey, which I’ve now replaced with straight bcs as above.

I hate, hate, hate training in AC. This is actually a huge pet peeve of mine and our school is air conditioning one of our rec facilities and I think it’s preposterous. There was AC on in the warmup room at the last meet I went to and I never took my sweats and hat off. Back in the day I always heard you should train in the heat because it keeps everything limbered up and ready to go. I think it’s easier to feel energized in the heat because of the fight-or-flight response. Dr. Squat even said it increases GH, but I don’t know about that.

The more in-shape I am the less training in the heat bothers me, but when I’m especially fat and sassy it just murders me. I’ve actually been abstaining from the air conditioner in my apartment this year and I think that helps. When you go from sitting round in AC to having to exercise in the heat it makes it even worse.

Edited for numerous typos and bad spelling!

I take glutamine on occasion. I know it’s been talked about on this site and I’ve participated in a few discussions, but does anybody know the final answer on if it’s good for muscle, or just good for it’s “other” purposes.

My creatine intake is around 20-25 for a loading stage and 10-15g a day usually some pre/post workout.

I am curious to how an insulin response mid-workout could affect performance. Otherwise I usually consume some carbs during a workout because I get a better pump.

That would be sweet if we did get a hormonal response from training in the heat that is greater than AC. I don’t like AC either, but I don’t like training in 100+ degree heat. I had a competition last year in the bay area of california and the pump room was 1/2 inside and 1/2 outside. You know us bodybuilders don’t wear much clothing and I was all oiled up so I didn’t want to put clothes on, plus my class was out next. It was probably 60 degrees outside and in a bananna hammock that’s freezing. I couldn’t do anything and I was still cold onstage…it sucked…

I don’t use creatine/glutamine/bcaa’s.
But I do drink a shake made with rice milk mixed with whey/micellar casein just before and immediately after every workout.

I used to train in my garage gym, but NJ summers are brutal, and the winters were just as bad. Since moving my homegym into my finished basement, it’s a constant cool temp year round. It’s just cool enough that if I sit too long between sets, I get chilled. I’m better motivated now.

Wow Gerdy, I thought I was really loading up on the creatine. I think you’ve got me beat!

You and The Todd can keep your 'nana hammocks though, no one wants to see me pull that look.

I do use glutamine and BCAAs, but I just recently got on them, so I’m not entirely knowledgeable about how well they’ve worked with my body. I’m still experimenting with different dosages and grams per day, seeing what works well for me.

I’m not really using creatine at the moment, but I do still have some really cheap, crappy ommitted-brand creatine that I got from a superstore a couple years back. I may just go ahead and try and finish it, since I spent like fifteen dollars on it. Might as well use what I bought…

Lastly, as far as heat is concerned, I can’t stand it. I know I’m a bit more critical with temparatures than most people. I sweat and get hot extremely easily and cold doesn’t really bother me. Even when I’m an air-conditioned gym, I manually go over and turn on all the fans I can to cool me the hell off. If I’m in a gym that’s pretty hot, especially when doing squats or deads, I’ll just feel lethargic and shitty.

Glutamine = good recovery for me. I love it. It’s probably due to better gut health that allows me to assimilate my food better.

I used about 6-8g of CEE per day.

No carbs during workout - just a TON of BCAAS (40g usually)

I HATE AC. I always avoid fans and such if there is any in a gym. I love to sweat. Period.

You guys that hate AC must live in some pretty tempered climates… Most months its fine, but Summer in Palm Springs would leave you fainting(it gets 115-125).

I’ll be giving mega-dose BCAA’s a fair run this Summer in my quest for 10 pounds in 12 weeks, we’ll see how that goes.

Never really tried glutamine, but the ICE I bought has it in it along with BCAA’s, so I really wont be able to evaluate it objectively.

lifting in the heat may feel like your doing more but just because youre sweating doesnt mean anything, it just means youre hot. personally lifting at a reasonable temperature is best, something comfortable.

i dont want heat exhaustion taking away from my lifts, when itd be hot out and i had to wait for the bus to take to the gym id always wait inside the station to avoid getting fatigued by the heat. it was the worst if i had to walk.

i dont take creatine, bcaas, or glutamine. i took creatine monohydrate and it didnt do anything for me.

alright i need some help with my squat form.

it seems i start out ok but i usually end up using the front part of my foot too much and starting to tilt forward, i think it also fucks with my back. is it just not keeping my back straight? i try to drive in with my heels but it doesnt help.

ill have some people look at it in person but i figured maybe its somethign really simple so might as well ask. thanks.

no I really do lift more, my numbers go up.

Say I train in an AC gym for a while and I start to plateu, if I switch to a “hot” gym then my lifts will be at least 10lbs heavier than normal and I feel that I can lift them with ease.

how did you take your creatine? How long as well? Either you didn’t take it right, had too high expectations, or are a “non-responder” but that’s a rare case.

on your squat problem, your hips are probably a bit tight and it is causing your body to feel uncomfortable during the lift. This is causing you to fall forward on your toes more, activating your quads more than glute/ham, etc. I had a similar problem and after some basic stretching it turned out fine. Hope that helped…

yea dude my hips always hurt from everything, even just walking sometimes.

also i have another question, everytime i do leg press i start to lose my hearing for a little while, why is this happening? i make sure to breathe, i breathe fuckin hard man lol.

I’ve noticed some days my hearing is little…different I guess (sounds louder, kind of like an echo or something), but ive never actually “lost my hearing” after training.

I always assumed it was due to blood pressure rising, but I do not know if that is the real reason or not.

well as long as im not the only one. i guess thats a good sign

I lived in San Bernardino for most of my life and now I reside in Gainesville Florida which is just as hot but more humid.

I still love me my hot gyms.

Haven’t seen much action in the BBB, so I’ll throw out an update to a previous conversation.

All I’m trying to say is that if his arms have been neglected, he may be able to gain an inch while only putting on a total of 5 lbs, or even staying at the same time. Maybe, maybe not. He’ll find out by the end of the summer anyhow.
Since early-mid April (let’s call it 6 weeks) when I started to add some calories and hit my arms directly and more frequently, I’ve added 3/4" to my upper arms. I’m 9 pounds up in weight-- I don’t know the ratio of muscle/fat/water, but pants are fitting the same and the shirts are a little tighter up top

Whaddya know-- eating more and targeting lifting works!

Good job, man. Since May 4th I’ve managed to drop .5 from my waist, and add about .25 to my arms and almost an inch to my legs.

Keep it up!
