The Beautiful Gain

snowing here too!

At least you have trainers at your gym that could show you the big 3 properly…I would say there is 3 out of 6 at my gym…I’d like to include myself in that, even though Im still learning myself!

But one of the older trainer ladies asked ME to show her how to squat with a bb not too long ago…I was stunned…she said she never learned, and it wasn’t as likely that a girl would do that 20 years ago!

Does it ever stop snowing in MD?!

MIM, that’s because you’re an awesome trainer! Represent!

So upper back pain got worse - grrrr! Apparently I may have jammed things up doing the pullups/lat pulls etc.

Just took a bath with epsom salt. Seemed to have helped thus far. Also just rolled it out a bit.

I’m going to run to the pharmacy for some more salts and take another bath later today. But clearly what I’m going to have to do is get a mani/pedi so that I can sit in that mechanical massage chair…

Snow day = Rehab day

Apparently snow day = spa day…lol

Hells yeah for spa day! Apparently for my photo shoot, I’m gonna have to give up my spray tan V-card…

HAH! Kimba, these pics are going to be epic!

Turns out the mani/pedi/mechanical massage worked wonders for my upper body pain! In fact, I’m not in any pain at all, and only feel some occasional soreness if I take a deep breath. Seriously, this massage chair is like having Brunhilda dig her meaty knuckles into your back, sooooo good.

Tonight I’m meeting with trainer Steve. Poor thing, he’s a subdued individual and I’m like a toy snauzer with a bag of snausages. Should be interesting. Really excited to work on form and learn the bench press and pull throughs.

so how did it go last night?

Apparently, we’ve made history…it doesn’t always snow this much! Florida is sounding nicer by the second!(our next duty station)

MIM, tell me about it! Florida is sounding better and better.

Here’s a pic of what neighborhood looked like - its nothing compared to what you got!

Douchebag of the Day: Trainer Steve.

I just texted him to confirm if we were still on tonight and he texted back, “Actually I have a bunch of make ups from yesterday, can we reschedule for later tonight or tomorrow?”

All I could write back was “I’ll take tomorrow, thanks for the advance notification”

F*ing annoying, especially since I’ve been looking forward to this all week.

No bother, I’ll just head in to the gym and do some metabolic stuff, maybe go over some of the new lifts I’ll be doing.

He’s a douchebag for bumping you back? Lord, I don’t want to know what my clients say about me!

You trainers think you’re rock stars, don’t you?!

Just big ol’, strong, barbell wielding, rock stars…grumble grumble

i high five every woman i see who can do pull ups.

which makes me the weird guy who high fives the 2 women who can actually do pull ups at my gym.

That sucks Masch…do you think he would have even called?

I keep getting canceled on by email. The day of…so annoying…no one talks on the phone anymore apparently.

joshlydell - Thanks! I’m better at high-fiving than at pullups that’s for sure. And if you’re impressed by my pullups, you should check out some of the other ladies in the forum. Amazing!

MIM - Honestly,I don’t so much care if someone reschedules me, but the truth is I don’t think he was going to call! I think I would’ve just shown up and he would’ve been like, “opps!” - that’s what annoyed me most. I try not to hold grudges in life, so as my form of revenge, I went to the gym and worked out right next to him and his client - and I tried to get the message across that I’m serious about my training, so don’t F with me. LOL!

So here’s my ad hoc gym session for yesterday:

Push press (haven’t done these in ages) - 10x45, 2x6x65, 10x55 << 65 was a lofty endeavor
Bent over lat raises (tested these out for Program) - 8x15, 2x6x25, 10x20 << is this one of those exercizes where you’re suppossed to keep weight light?

Circuit 1 - 3x
15 Bulgarian Jump lunges (each leg)
30 Alternating renegade rows 12.5lbs
20 Jump squats < i was getting height on these, no joke!
10 Pushups with 10lb plate on back
10 Pike jackknives

Circuit 2 - 2x
2min Jump rope
20 walking lunges
15 step lunges
15 side squat off step
4x 45lb plate pushes

God I wish I had a prowler at the gym, that would do me soooo good. I need to find something to use instead of plate pushes.

My back is feeling surprisingly good! I was scared to mess it up, but purposely didn’t do any pulling work. Got home and took a salt bath just in case.

bent over lat raises make me check my ego, thats fo sho! I would quality over quantity…

Another exercise that is kinda fun, is db flips! That will also get you some looks…or plane old walking with heavy dbs to and fro (farmer carries)

Maybe I’ll get some vid this weekend

Are you trying to imply that I am not a rock star?

nice work…

I am a dunce, are you in manhattan

Bobbi - There’s no doubt you’re a rock star.

kmnyc - Thanks! Yep.

So. Freaking. Stoked.

Trained with Steve. I think my squat and DL improved immensely after I posted the vids because all I have to do are some pretty reasonable form adjustment. These are:

Squat:
Hold bar higher - I get the shelf thing now.
Tighten abs - this is so hard for me!
Have to make a slow descent
Lock out hips at top
Something about pushing knees out…

DL:
Set up closer to the bar
Wider stance
Tighten abs - grrrr!
Keep bar closer to body
Lock out hips at the top

I think the pull throughs are going to help me with the locking hips out bit, but the abs thing is kind of a mental challenge. It’s true tho, I’m all floja in the middle.

He also said, interestingly, in my descent that I should think about pushing the bar up. I guess because I drop into the squat.

I also realized that putting the bar higher on my back gets rid of the wrist strain. Super glad about that.

On the plus side, I’ve been getting below parallel and keeping the chest up. So that’s good.

As for DL, Steve said it was pretty good, and that I don’t loose arch. Just a few tweakings. We also tried out a conventional and he said it looked good, but since I have strong legs I should do Sumo - that way I can start pushing more weight.

Steve also said that I should aim to add 5 lbs a week on all sets. And we decided that instead of the Bulgarian Split Squats on the DL day, I’m going to do back squats first 5x5 and then DL 3x5 and then do the rest of the accessories. We figured that once a week squatting wasn’t go to make any significant gains. Anyways, he also chastised me for wanting to do too many exercises- he’s likes “boring but big”. I tried to explain my reasoning to him, I hope I did it justice. In the end, he said it was a good program.

On Tuesday we meet again for a half hour. He’s going to teach me to bench. I’m excited. I know I can do 65lbs. So I’d like to see where I can go from there. But how do you bench without a spot?

Anyways, didn’t work out too hard. Good thing actually, yesterdays circuits left me a bit sore.

Squat - 5x65, 85, 95, 105, 115
DL - 5x95, 3x115, 5x135

I’m off for the weekend. Huzzah! Sunday I’m brunching with my homegirl Marissa. We decided on a place that we both know and love. I already know what I’m eating. Fried chicken with blue cheese dressing and a biscuit, all to be washed down with some hard lemonade.

Then we’re going to scout out the pharmacies for Valentines day. Marissa will return the day after Valentines and buy a smorgasbord of chocolate at half price. I, on the other hand, can’t wait, and will buy a giant heart shaped box of chocolates. That’ll keep me busy.

Happy V-day Y’all!

Awesome training day. Always nice to learn from people in person.

Masch - what exactly does Steve mean when he says to “tighten” your abs during squats? Did he clarify? Because in my experience (and everything I have read from people who squat BIG weight) you are supposed to actually take a BIG breath and fill your belly full of air before you squat. Taking in a big breath makes your belly REALLY tight and it helps stabilize your spine while you are squatting… just a thought. Carry on. =D
