The Athletic Physique

LIAR!!! There is simply no way you can get that strong by training like a bodybuilder. I heard that from the 135lbs personal trainer at my gym so it MUST be true!!

Although, yes, these athletes may get huge through bodybuilding principles, it can’t be denied the role of the clean and jerk and other compound movements in their routines. Maybe its the combination of bodybuilding training plus the explosive movements such as pylometrics and the on-the-field beating that makes these guys such monsters.

Genetics aside - when most of the guys who look like that in the field of football - it is because they spent a lot of time doing bodybuilding training.

Go hang out at any college gym during the offseason. What you will see are football trainers training like everyone else who is jacked - on a bodypart split! Many of them don’t give a rat’s ass about what their strength coach prescribes them.

Also, there is the case of exceptions! Not every football player looks like that and the ones who do look like that from pure strength and conditioning work are anomalies. I highly doubt anyone on this board is going to look remotely like that with plyos, sprints, O-lift variations, and so on (read: training like a bodybuilder).

Agreed. Not to mention, as seen in the T-Cell so far, the biggest/strongest people here didn’t train that way either.

lol, that was funny…

Seriously, threads like theses are gay. I’m sorry, “ghey”

Genetics, do play a part, but’s its a small part.

Most people who speak of genetics speak of it to make them feel better for their lackluster results, or lackluster physiques. Using genetics as a cop-out so to speak.

What I will say is most black kids play basketball and football in your youth so that is what you see at the pro level.

The same bullshit argument you say about blacks and football and basketball I could say about white kids and other spors like baseball, wrestle, gymnastics, swim, golf, tennis, cross country, ski, snowboard, skateboard etc, etc. How many black people do you see in these sports? Very few.

So does that lead one to believe that black people are superior in football, track, and basketball? and whites superior in baseball, wrestling, skiing, snowbaording, skateboarding, golf, tennis, snowbaording, skateboarding etc, etc? No.

Really the whole thing is silly. It just comes down to choices made as youths. As most competitve organized sports start out before the age of 8.

by the way, that guy Gifted (Brandon) said he started working out at like 8 years old and came from a gymnastics background.

What were you doing at 8 to 10 years old? or what WEREN’T you doing?

I’ve had a chance to look at several D-1 college football strength training programs both in-season and off-season from BIG TIME schools.

All of them were either 3 or 4 days a week upper/lower boypart splits. No TBT training whatsoever.

Thanks P-X.

I think its good and all that people admire the physiques of these guys. Who wouldn’t?

But I think some people are mistaken when they are enamoured EXCEPTIONS. They may see AN O-Lifter or athlete or A gymnast and be impressed with his physique. Then they see some article by (insert our fave PT here) trying to put 2 and 2 together and coming to the conclusion that because a few ballet dancers, OLers, and gymnasts are jacked, that we now have to abandon traditional bodybuilding and incorporate rings, OLs, or some other shit.

Folks, I might be mistaken here. But
MOST OLers, ballet dancers, and gymnasts are not that fuckin’ big! The ones who are - are exceptions. Nearly all of us are not exceptions!

I know I’ve posted this picture before, but take a look at Eagles defensive tackle Broderick Bunkley at 306 pounds. Amazing.

Essentially, football is a game of repeated HIIT. The actual game includes sprinting, then rest. Training involves 90% sprinting, not much long distance.

Ho-lee shit!

How tall is that guy?

Pardon me if this sounds ignorant but…Would the possibility of blacks being superior be because of all the blacks that were in America as slaves? Kinda like survival of the fittest where the weaker ones die and the strongest lived to pass down superior genetics.

There was a discussion about ripped olympic gymnasts having big arms and shoulders, plus small legs, bigger torso, and a favorable bone structure. People debated about whether it was their training or whatever, but one person said this:

The reason why Olympic level gymnasts all have these traits is because of their genetics and their training. But sometimes, only the gymnasts with FAVORABLE genetics will be able to make it to the top tier.

That is why in the top tier you see the ripped arms, good bone structure, etc. because only those with great genetics can take their sport to the next level.

I think a similar concept applies to the NFL.[/quote]

I agree.

Yea that makes you sounds ignorant.

If that was the case, then ALL blacks living in America would be descendants of these “superior blacks” as you put it and they all would be world class athletes, sporting huge muscular physiques with no bodyfat.

But surviving slavery as you put has nothing to do with arhletic superiority.

Really a stupid, ignorant statement. Using your logic, one could say all jews who survived the Holocaust should be pysyically superior.

Really, you guys should lay off the Nazi logic.

I would take that one step further and say that when choosing slaves, slave owners would more likely choose a large and strong worker over a weak and small worker. Hence, most of their descendants then have a propensity to be strong/athletically gifted.

It can be compared to selective breeding.

Think about it…a black person from Africa is unlikely to be as fast-twitch dominant/athletic as an African-American. These countries do not preform as well in international sporting events such as the Olympics. Most of these dominant athletes are descendants from slaves.

Flawed logic.

Just because two intelligent people have a child…does it mean he will be intelligent?

No.

More likely to be intelligent, yes. But it is not “destined”.

There is a ton of genetic variation in Africa. What we think of as the best athletes are usually of West African descent. East Africa produces some of the best distance runners.

All Africans are not the same.

Africa, as the birthplace of the human race has more genetic diversity than everywhere else combined. Shortest people, tallest people, etc.

Just because some is strong doesn’t mean their child will be strong. But it is more likely.

Not directly, but it could attribute.

The Germans were not interested in separating the strong from the weak, they just wanted all Jews dead. But an American would want a strong slave I assume.

I’m sorry for adding to this pointless conversation.

The sign next to him says he’s 6’2 and 6 inches and 306 pounds. Monster

Honestly, who the fuck cares if somebody is black or white?

Michigan is starting a white running back.

Matt Jones, who is white, ran a 4.37 at the combine measuring in at 6’6 245.

While some of you are on the computer making excuses, these guys are busting their asses overcoming your stereotypes

YOU may think it’s an exception but I’m willing to place a bet a years salary that if 100 people on here were put through a NFL running backs training and nutrition from peewee football to his second season they would look like a muscular powerful ripped 205 -225 lber. And if they would put through a linemans training they would resemble them.

It happens all the time in football. If a good coach finds somebody who will work hard enough, their bodies will look like their positions. I can’t agree with you I do not think these are exceptions, but the result of hard work.

Same thing happens when a new coach or strength conditioner goes to a football team, all of a sudden the kids are bigger faster and stronger.

They get bigger, faster, and stronger but don’t resemble bodybuilders, like the few examples shown here.

Joe DeFranco is an example of a great strength coach who gets people into great shape. They still don’t look like bodybuilders. Being in shape - whatever the heck this means or looks like to people - is not the same as looking like a bodybuilder or looking VERY jacked.

You told me if a person goes through decades of large amounts of physical training, they will have a nice physique. Well, of course they most likely will. But AGAIN -it’s not bodybuilding.
