I just think it’s funny these people believe they discovered moral relativism. It’s even funnier that they are also dogmatic and ideologues.
Since I’m petty I scrolled through the first 300-ish posts of the Russia thread. Would appreciate more details about these claims.
And if I, as a layman, overestimated Russian conventional capabilities then I’m in the bad company of CIA/NSA/WH and almost everyone except the Kamil Galeev guy. Oh, and I was positively shocked by Zelenskyy, I didn’t think he had it in him.
I’ve been to Ukraine - my professional expertise is actually useful for them - and seen the grim resolve and how the other side is commited to full scale genocide that is hampered only by their incompetence.
BTW, this is tacit acknowledgment that the war is going badly. They have to do histrionics for their culture war supporters. I guess next step is starting an investigation into Hunter?
Hell, Russia was going to invade and conquer the west coast of America too.
There’s a documentary on that called The Russians are Coming, The Russians are Coming.
Our resident Eastern European expert must have believed it was that.
Was that ever actually said?
All I remember was a photo of a Russian billboard saying Alaska was former Russian territory or something like that and clips from Russian TV saying Alaska would be taken back.
Whether or not that would/could ever happen, is it crazy to say that might be what at least some in Russia would like to do?
The late Alan Arkin’s parents were Ukrainian Jews from Odessa so he got the accent and mannerisms right.
Of course not, but never let truth get in the way of a mediocre quip on the internet.
Edit: read from around post 1640-1650.
Of course, I don’t think he actually believed it-I’m pretty sure his online ego just wouldn’t let him admit that he’d used “penultimate” incorrectly.
That’s why it’s a check in ‘once a month or so’.
More than 50% of students (as specified) are probably doing just fine. The proportion of students who clearly have issues would be given access to longer and more frequent check ins.
I see a psychologist a couple of times per month. Having someone to talk to REALLY helps. Many young men and women don’t have that luxury
This isn’t impossible/a stretch of resources
But… why?
Living forever would be a curse.
There would be no meaning to life if it were infinite…
Also… neurodegeneration… you’d need to figure out how to bypass the process of aging.
No they don’t ![]()
Sounds like I’m being shouted at ![]()
Do you ever stop to think perhaps a sizable portion, albeit not a majority cannot be accomodated by the rules, standards and codes of conduct you outline?
Outliers may not matter as much as the majority do, but we do matter. It is not the better of two evils to toss us aside, as doing so breeds long term resentment and dysfunction.
I can’t have kids… and if I could there’s a 50% chance my kid inherits a genetic disease. So where is my wife and my family? What wife would want to enter a marriage knowing there’s a good chance she’s going to have to take care of me down the line? What wife wants to enter a marriage knowing she isn’t going to have kids?
Furthermore… your rules/codes of conduct are family centric, yet this dynamic doesn’t remotely relate to some… why should I be forced to follow rules centred around a paradigm that doesn’t benefit me in ANY way, shape or form. It only serves as a remainder of what I will never have.
We need different societies and/or areas that accomodate people with different needs. With that said, I don’t want to live around criminals and drug addicts! I care about my safety
We already have ‘different strokes for different folks’ in some areas i.e anywhere off limits to younger people. I care about your concerns, but there needs to be accomodation for people who can’t or don’t have what you outline as optimal.
I shouldn’t be entitled to behave like a disruptive ass at the expense of the ‘normies’ just as the muggles (harry potter reference) shouldn’t pull me out of my path to escapism because my reality (esp long term) is far from a happy one.
The mother of my girlfriend when I was a teenager married a man that was quadruplegic, as did my oldest brothers wife. Actually both of his wives, but that first one was of dubious motives.
These are men who were in wheelchairs when they met these women.
They’re out there. They certainly aren’t a dime a dozen, but they do exist.
Probably won’t find one by writing yourself off as out of the running though.
Even my wife, because I was 9 feet tall and bullet proof when we met, has been incredibly supportive and understanding of the changes that have taken place the last couple years.
I don’t know why. I was not talking about you, me, or any man specifically. I was talking about social institutions and expectations.
My main point was that in a healthy society Andrew Tate and all these other bullshit artists would be rock bottom or never even thought of.
I never said or thought everyone should be married. I’m also not special because I’m married with children nor am I someone who exclaims, “family is everything,” though I do think the family one comes from is a huge predictor of life outcomes
I think a number so low is sad if that’s the case.
What has anyone here ever mentioned that would impair you from having a satisfying life?
Can you give an example of what needs you’re talking about? Is anyone here speaking as if you or anyone unmarried and childless shouldn’t have healthcare, law enforcement, education and so on. Please explain this because I don’t know what you’re talking about.
I’m joking ![]()
I believe that I should be able to have my fun while I still can. This DOESN’T mean screwing around or making a nuisance of myself
But I do want to travel and be as active as humanely possible without people trying to control me even if I know I’ll pay for it later
I’m ‘paying’ by being alive, so I might as well live it on my terms, and I will accept the consequences that eventuate
Under a collectivist motto (somewhat Australia) I have restrictions on what jobs I can work… I can’t work many ‘touristy jobs’ as a doctor won’t give me clearance. But I think I should be allowed to pick fruit or do manual jobs if I’m willing to sign a liability waiver.
Can’t do many physical activities (only the most unregulated of sports can I feasibly participate in now)
I want to get married… but I need to find a wife that would be ok with marrying someone like me… if getting married is all about having kids I’m kind of screwed aren’t I…? and as to providing… need to find a job where I can be selective about my hours
Failing getting married, I don’t want to be celibate for the rest of my life either… so how do I have sex? I either need to have sex out of wedlock, or I need to go to brothels/prostitutes (how would you feel about that? I don’t feel good about it.)
I don’t like the idea of having sex with prostitutes because I think ‘how did this person get here’… most of the time I reckon prostitutes have unhappy life stories
And therefore I feel bad because by satisfying my carnal desires I am taking advantage of a vulnerable demographic.
I feel as I should be given a pass. You are adamantly against travelling/galavanting around… but if the ideal ‘pattern to follow’ isn’t viable for me, why can’t I travel around… eat fancy cheese and try KFC from every country that offers KFC?
I can’t give you an exact number. Look up what percentage of teenagers take SSRI’s, SNRI’s, atypical antidepressants, tricyclic antidepressants, benzodiazepines and Z-drugs combined and whatever percentage ISN’T taking those meds are the ones who are ‘fine’
I also believe like 5-10% of adolescents have ADD/ADHD. You’ll find around 2-5% of adolescents as a result take ADHD meds (not everyone can tolerate the meds).
If you want a script for ritalin or any ADHD med like that in Australia your doctor fills out a ton of forums and applies for a special access permit on your behalf every 6-12 months
On top of that, a GP cannot prescribe stimulants unless they have a very special license.
Also, there’s actually a clinic in the USA that works with people who have my disease… and get this… the place is called P.R.I.S.M
I’m 100% serious. My folks told me about it and I thought they were messing with me… I can’t believe they stole that from me!
I seriously don’t know what all this has to do with what I said. I’m not being sarcastic.
I’m not a globetrotter. If you or anyone wants to travel around, go ahead. I intend to travel more with my family in the future and I don’t see harm in people traveling. If my son wants to do some traveling as a young man, that’s fine too. But I’m not going to recommend for him to engage in undue globetrotting.
Who would propose some weirdo institution would ever stop someone from traveling?
I seriously don’t know how you extrapolated what you did from my post.
America consumes like 80% of the worlds medication.
Sometimes meds are prescribed when people don’t need them in the states… hence I am skeptical that someone ‘isn’t fine’ if they take antidepressants in the states considering antidepressants are prescribed for… EVERYTHING over there @BrickHead . It should be noted American doctors sometimes have incentives to prescribe medication
You guys advertise prescription medications to the public, and you have sales reps wining and dining doctors… very strange
Imagine watching tv in the 1990s
“Do you have a back ache? Try… oxycontin…”
“May cause constipation, itching, nausea, vomiting and death”
For me to travel
Various countries/societies need to be accomodating towards foriegners.
Isolationist attitudes, an emphasis on settling down quickly widely discourages travel. Would a huge emphasis on getting married and having kids not de facto ostracise those who aren’t getting married and having kids?
I don’t think I’m entitled to a wife, I think life isn’t fair… and if a normal life isn’t cut out for some then so be it
But if the path of the normie doesn’t accomodate someone, should they be punished from deviating from that path IF they aren’t ruining it for others by doing so?
Under your proposed dynamic, would people who aren’t marriage material i.e probably me have to be celibate?
Society needs a mix of individualism and collectivism. Not one or the other.
Here’s what I mean by a kid being “fine”: no social problems, no mental illness, good grades, normal families, no behavioral problems.
Is that something amazing these days?
