So, I’m reading this article and having several thoughts come into my head all at the same time. There are many ways you can look at this.

My first thought/question: Why does everyone look at an advance like this and IMMEDIATELY think “sports application/cheating atheletes”? I guess it’s because there’s so much money involved in professional sports/olympics. Why can’t they look at this and say “wow, that would be really great for patients suffering from degenerative muscle diseases”? That thought is reserved for a couple of sentences near the end of the article. I guess you can chalk some of that up to the sensationalism of the media, but still …

Also, it just seems to me that people are going to have to accept that humans are changing. Though the methods may not be completely “natural”, we are going to have to accept, in time, that applying science will advance the race. Sports records will fall. New achievments will be made. It’s not a magic pill that allows you to sit on your fat ass and eat potato chips AND look like a competitive BB’er. You still have to work out and eat right. In the end, the ones who do that will still out gain those who take it for granted.

This is an excellent development; too bad the public is so biased against using modern technology to advance the species through bioengineering. I guess it is partly due to the experimentation performed by the Nazi’s during WWII, not to mention the whole religious aspect of God and creation. So what is the general opinion amongst the T-mag readers about the use of biological enhancements on the human race? Do you think it is too much like playing God or do you think that we could be at the point in our development as a species to speed up the evolutionary process? Do you think we should take advantage of our progression of technology to enhance our genetics and essentially become a super race or should we leave it alone?

Unless I’m just blind, you have to input “Ageless athlete” into the local search engine once the page comes up. That said, it’s an interesting article.

I agree that it’s a crying shame that, with all the potential of this new gene therapy, most of the article concerns itself with something comparatively inconsequential like sports. But then what do you expect from the mass media? If their collective IQ ever hit 25, they could sell with a tidy profit.

Just wondering if Bill Roberts read this, and if he has any comments…
