Anyone ever consider/tried starting the press from the finished, locked out position so you get the benefit of the eccentric? Not for max attempts but maybe as a way to get more reps on sub-maximal weights? I find the first dead-stop rep is what drains me the most. Would unracking it from that position be feasible? Should I try it? Is this a dumb question?
I do this… I basically push press the bar up and then begin from there. I think it gives the body a bit of a primer to handle the load. I’ve also seen the logic put forth that for most every upper body lift, you begin from the locked out position, so why not the military press? Seems to work for me.
And I’m in… my best is a 170 and about 190lbs. while doing 5/3/1.
I’m already on this quest, so it’s good to make it “offical”. So far i’m at 90kg/1 and 85kg/3 reps at 95kg bodyweight and these are strict presses beginning at the upper chest each rep. It’s good to see that we have some guys hitting a bodyweight strict overhead press which is considered by many as a real solid strength milestone.
I have been going for a 225 military press this year so far. I got a push press of 225 about 2 weeks ago, my strict military is at about 185 right now, I press from my clavicles, I don’t know any other way or that there was a discussion on variation, but oh well.
Sweet. I’m in. I’ve been chasing the double plate OHP for a few months now. Current PR is 210, coming from below the chin. Abs/core I think are my weak point, since I can triple 100lbs DB seated on good day. In the past I’ve been able to do a seated 225 and my standing OHP was much worse then.
I’ve been doing a version of 5/3/1 which has helped out quite a bit. 1RM was 175 back in Sept of last year. I probably would have had even better progress if I quit making excuses and actually trained abs/core. But I hate doing abs.
I’ll do a variety of acc. work aimed toward good balance to prevent injury. front raises, lat raises, internal/external rotation, rear delt type stuff, etc.
In this race too. 225 was my goal for the year and I am at 150 for 3x5. Long ways to go but I’m gonna get a lot more out of my novice gains for my presses. My reach that is 3 inches shorter than my height has to be good for something!
120x10 I’ve got some work to do. That supposedly puts me at a max of 160 which is probably about right. My max touch and go bench is 285 and probably a smidge higher now. Does that much of a difference indicate that my shoulders are weak?
Funny how we on T-Nation do not exhibit much of the average gym goer. I’ve worked out around the world in plenty of different gyms and rarely see someone else do a military press. Plenty of queers doing the seated military-to-incline bastard hybrid though.
Do me a favor, go get operated on twice, losing whatever strength you have to the point of barely being able to lift 135… and then work out in a gym where everyone takes their good health for granted and no one does legitimate heavy barbell moves and let me know how you feel.

None of that changes the fact that you act cocky and like you have big game on the internet while being about as strong as I was as a fat 15 year old.
Excuse me if I bust my ass and go all out in the gym trying to better myself. I don’t act like I have big game on the internet, but apparently my progress is upsetting you. Too fucking bad!
I had better things to do when I was 15 which lead me to have a great career and accomplish almost all of my life goals by the time I was 23… but haters are gonna hate.
Act cocky. Try determined and confident with the hard work to back it up. Shed your tears and cry me a fucking river.
Yes, yes you do. “Plenty of queers doing the seated military-to-incline bastard hybrid though.” That’s you shitting on other people and acting as if you are somehow superior to them. Well, news flash, a 145 military press and a 305 DL means you are at about the strength of a beginner in the gym. You have nothing to back up your claim to be anything other than the average gym goer other than doing “hardcore” exercises like the standing military press.
Oh and as far as your progress upsetting me? Lol. No. If you are making progress that’s fine and I’m happy for you. I hope you continue to do so. You simply haven’t made much of any progress yet, lifting wise.

^ Truth.
There is no reason to bash others in your gym. Furthermore, this thread is not about who is more “successful” in life because they were doing other things at 15. That made me lol.
More importantly in regards to this thread, I am almost to 225. I went for it a few weeks ago, but I couldn’t lock out the last 2 inches in the lift. I did 180x8 on my last work set of week 2 in 5/3/1. I am about 205lbs.
I’m glad I’m the only guy who feels like Lou Ferrigno in Raw Iron then… but if you don’t know what your talking about you should keep your mouth shut. Newsflash! You don’t know jack shit about me, so shut your fucking mouth! Here, I’ll do it for you.

I heard your life story a few posts back, does that count towards knowing jack shit about you?
