That's Just Harry

Sounds like a great day indeed! Grats on the placement. I have no idea what any of the measurements mean, but they must have been good!

Thanks Wiex.
Had to change gears this week and concentrate of T&F throwing and get some swimming in.
Swam Sunday indoor
200m Breaststroke x 3
500m free x 2
really worked the turns

Threw Monday, lifted Tuesday, threw this morning

16# shot x 5pp
14# shot x 5pp
6k x 10 full

1.85k disc x 4pp
1.6k disc x 4pp
1.5k disc x 12 full form

They need to invent a water proof sheaf! I seriously never manage to do anything but screw it up. I grew up pitching bales but for some reason it is my worst event. It doesn’t help that they almost never include it up here. I think when they are running it by organizers they hear “sheep toss” instead of sheaf and they worry they will get in trouble with the SPCA…

Good throwing, congratulations!

Now I want to get out again…you’re my Yoda.

PS: I had to look up who Shakira was. Good choice.

How’d you do up in Tennessee?

on your long question, I was thinking about that the other day. Dan John was saying in one of his posts that it’s hard to get excited for competing as his strength wanes. He hasn’t lost the joy of throwing the discus, just doesn’t treasure the competition.

I’m lucky in that I started throwing late. I only have 1 year of real throwing and 2 years of not being able to. So I figure by the time I am hitting my best throws, I’ll be in my late 50’s. So I guess that’s lucky for me.

On the other hand, though, if I put on my drunken irish philosopher hat, I can’t imagine ever not wanting to go out with the boys for feats of strength. The comeraderie is great, and so is the feeling of knowing you did the best you could that day. even if it isn’t close to what you used to do.

Hope you had a great time in TN!

And, never give up. I’ve heard that Shakira admires tenacity…

Everything all right Harry?

One day we are going to have to go Hildegards and chow on some snitzel.

I hate to bump an older thread like this, but hey, its the internet. Long time lurker here. I read hel320’s workout routine and found it very interesting in his approach of essentially pairing 2 exercises in the same workout. Anyways, I started doing something very similar to this, keeping my training brief but intense blah blah blah. I am finding great success with it. My numbers are starting to really creep up there. thank you hel320 for posting your routine.

Hope you are doing great. God bless from a very old friend.

Brief update: Saw Carl Darby was posting a gain and told him I give him an update. Use to hang out here and post regularly. Well known for going way off topic and posting about what ever comes to mind. Lifting was always suppose to be an ends to a means for me: throw shit far, but I quite often get the means confused with the end.

I turned 60 in March and did my second, and hopefully last, retirement at the beginning of this month. So, currently I’m competing in Master’s Track & Field (athletics for people from Wales, Canada, etc.), some highland games, couple of very small powerlifting meets, and swimming. Since my retirement I’ve gone back to teaching Martial Arts in a very limited capacity but I rarely discuss that here.

Carl, using the 5k shot and 1k disc now. Damn little ass discus goes higher than it does far. My technique was never the greatest and the 1k is all tech. Harder I throw, worse it goes. Actually been studying the European women throwers but getting my arm back like they do ain’t gonna happen. Not throwing the hammer any more at all. Threw a 42+m in my last meet and 13.20m shot.

They replaced some metal pieces in me at the end of last year so I haven’t really practiced enough for any highland games. Did a gym meet in power lifting 2 weeks ago and weighing right over 110k went: Squat: 230k Bench: 170 DL: 235. Swam in the Tennessee and Alabama Senior O’s and won my events. Feeling heavy at 242 so planning on dropping about 10 pounds. Have 2 more T&F Meets left an whatever else I can find. That’s bout it.

Hopefully, I’ll be keeping up with your post. Harry

Harry, great to hear from you! So many folks were missing when I got back. It doesn’t seem quite the same place. Fortunately, there are still good folks here.

Looks like you have been staying busy and successful at it. Keep us posted… Love the updates and the commentary…

Admit it Harry, you forgot your password.

Always enjoyed your humor. Glad you’re back.

What is a “discus training tool”?

That’s a big swim, do you go upriver first?

The discus training tool is 1.5k weight attached to a hammer handle and 3 links. I think John Powell or Wolfgang Schmitt came up with it. I jury rigged up my own.
Usually go downriver first so I can get good and warmed up for the upriver pull.

Did the replacing of your “metal pieces” set you back very far? Your strength doesn’t seem to really show it.

Wouldn’t think of “starting with you”. You’ve earned the right to do your whole workout in the smith, if you want.

Strick, do not enable cousin Harry’s smith machine usage. we will just politely ignore that it happens 8*)

Harry, do you have any Highland Games planned, or just T&F?

Great to see you back…
