That's Just Harry

Good to see that you plan to continue to add to your bling collection Harry. Inspiring as always.

Could feel it yesterday Joe.
corrmhona, Bleach ends at episode 366 so if you’re only up to season 3 you’ve got plenty more to watch. As for the highland games, you may find the master’s (over 40) is harder than being a B or even an A. I’ve got three former pro’s, all former national or world champs, who are over 40 and living less than a hundred miles from me. Several world class A’s who just turned 40 are also in the immediate area. Really makes meets great but sometimes it’s tempting to compete as a B.

As for my diet plan. Food. Went to Costco (like Sam’s club), had 3 foot long hot dogs, ($1.50 each!) smothered in onions and mustard, fries with mayo and several refills of Fanta orange. Bag of gummi bears for desert. I’m thinking of getting a patent on this diet so don’t pass it around.
Thanks punnyone (shouldn’t you be growing some by now?). Not getting to do near as many meets as the last few years.

Last night
Hasn’t rained for several days, rivers down, running slow. Took the dogs down and gave them a bath and a swim and then did a nice steady 1500m swim.

With that in your stomach, the lifting after throwing is twice as impressive!

I was just barely an A at my best, so I’m not thinking I’ll get back enough to be collecting bling, it is more a matter of getting out and having something to train for. I can’t just work out, I need a something specific I’m training for.

I’m on my fifth day of not being allowed in water. I’ve been showering with a rubber glove duct taped over my right hand to keep my wrist dry. Between all the swimming and jacuzzi’s on this bored I hitting the pool as soon as the doctor signs off on the wrist.

For f**k’s sake! I see what I’ve been doing wrong all this time. I’m changing my diet asap! A hot dog does sound really good right now.

Humidity was a killer yesterday. Too help matters, a brief afternoon downpour was followed by the sun coming back out. Had to rush home, change, and attend an event. Didn’t make the weight room so around 1000 did a quick 500m swim. Got a text from one of my HG partners and we’re going to do a practice this Monday.

Costco…damn, I load up on all the samples even the shit I dont like and then hit up the food court for one of those ultra cheezy slices of pizza and frozen yogurt swirl with extra stuff in it.

Today, HG practice, 6 of us, in the mud. Got in some good caber and sheath (my most needed) practice. All my picks in the caber are good but it was noted (the reason you practice with others) that I was letting the caber go forward to far before starting my throw. Really great day. Off again tomorrow so in the gym first thing.
Forgot to add:
Diana Nyad, 64, 104 mile swim, completed, Cuba to Florida, no cage, F…king A baby.

Harry, did you throw in high school and/or college? It’s cool you’ve got a group of HG guys to train with. Catch those little errors in form you would have missed. And some friendly competition never hurts either.

Steve, threw in HS and briefly in college. Threw for the military when I could.

I love how you list your lifts and then your all like 1x505. When I pull 505 I’m going to call the news.

Thanks Joe. I think the dl has always been my best lift. It’s the gorilla length arms. Sucks for the bench, though.
Ok, been behaving, staying on subject, just listing the lifting. However, been doing some thinking lately and having no one my age to discuss things with, yawl elected. Question. When is it enough?

Many years ago I hit my max lifts and I’ll never equal them again. I can still lift heavy, “for my age”, but it’s just not the same. It strokes the ego, briefly, because you can still lift some amount “at your age” but it’s just not that satisfying. Talked to lots of great throwers/lifters from back in the day (ain’t social media amazing!), asked why they’re not competing in the Master’s (old farts) events.

All say the same thing, once you’ve hit certain distances, you can’t get the feeling back throwing shorter and shorter. I’m beginning to get that feeling. I love to lift and throw, both have been part of my life since age 12, but really thinking of putting my energies into swimming where I didn’t compete as a youngster (except in CISM in Lifesaving).

Does anyone else get the same feelings? Does anyone else have a few the night before their day off and post on TNation? Does anyone else wonder why Shakira has reject them?

Harry, I find it interesting that you would ask this question. I was thinking, just a couple of days ago, that I hope I can move the weight you do, and can be as active as you are, when I hit my mid 50’s. The “at your age” is a part of it, simply because I am looking a decade or more down the road. Your performance, though, be it lifting or throwing, simply does not need the “at your age” qualifier.

You are one of the strongest folks on the forum. You constantly place, high, or at the top, when you compete. You are more athletic and active than 99% of us. Hell, I am still chasing your current performances…and wouldn’t be foolish enough to walk, run, swim, throw or spin a tale in competition with you.

I do understand what you mean, though. Really, if you used to put up a 500# bench press, whenever you felt like, struggling to get 400# can be depressing. Knowing that it will eventually get lower, even moreso. Of course, that will be the case with everyone, if we are lucky enough to live that long (the declining bench…not the 500# BP…lol).

I think that we have to allow our goals to evolve and, as you suggested, find new ways to engage ourselves. Lifting is just something that I love. I think, unless I am so broken that it is all pain, I will always lift weights, in some manner. Hopefully, it is something that I can do it with my kids and, maybe, God willing, my grandkids. A simple, yet worthy, goal. After all, what is the alternative?

I can’t change what has been done or the hand I’ve been dealt. So, I either play with the hand I am given or sit out of the game. Personally, I intended to play as long as I can. And when it becomes apparent that I am out of my league, I hope to just move down to the nickel table (they might have to drag me, kicking and screaming) and enjoy the fact that I am still in the game. Because long after my strength has waned, obstinance and cunning will remain. And I can always find something to compete at.

Sorry so long…

The one truth I cling to dearly in life, is the fact that I don’t know crap about sh!t. So, I can’t offer anything to the main question, other than another question. If you enjoy doing something, why would you cut it out? Are you thinking you’d still lift/throw, but scale it back while you focus on swimming?

I too, must log my thoughts after knocking back a few. Otherwise I won’t remember them in the morning… Have to ask about Shakira. Did she actually reject you? Or, has she just not gotten back to you yet? She seems like she’s a pretty busy lady, so it’s entirely possible that you still have a chance.

Strick, great reply and analysis. Wiex, I’ve had a long lasting, entirely one sided relationship on here with Shakira for a while now. It’s all in my head. If I remember rightly though I think Kevin (kmcnyc) got to do the lighting on one of her videos.
Competing in a HG next Sat and T&F the following Sat so going through my normal gotta throw something, gotta lift, gotta rest cycle.
Yesterday, worked on speed with the weight throws and got some good distances. Tried to work the sheaf but it’s the only place where my past injuries seem to affect me. (Throwing right handed).

28# wfd x 10 (last couple really went good)
42# wfd x 10
56# wfh x 5
42# wfh x 5
sheaf x 15
19# hammer x 5

Tonight
1.5k disc
12pp
21 full spin

T&F 6k hammer
1 turn x 3wu
2 turn x 5
3 turn x 6

1000m swim, weathers cooled down a little, water was great.

Off tomorrow, lift early. Big social function with one of the wife’s organizations in the evening. The things we do for love.

Mmm. Shakira.

Good luck at the meet! I’m looking forward to a full report.

did you say 1000m swim.

I often am laying down - at night wondering WTF I am still doing…
when I could be a losing competitor in ping pong.

Yes Shakira was a few years ago- Ive moved on -

from Oprah - to Gaga- I get to see people in super high res at too late at night to look good.

Long week ending in a long day.
Torrents of rain all day, fields of mud, heavy weights, good food, great companionship. Life don’t get much better.
