No problem with the H/S or college kids z_man. All of them want to learn the rotational style shot and are convinced it will improve their throws by 10ft.
Threw this morning and had a very large lunch. Headed out to see a play with the wife later to celebrate my 61st birthday.
Yeah, happy belated birthday. Always remember it is not downhill from here on. I think you’re stronger than I was at 61, if I can remember correctly that far back.
Added 2 more T&F meets in June to the schedule. SE regionals in Atlanta looks to have some great throwers there. Gained a new indoor swimming area at the local military installation. Grand opening the other day.
Last few days, nothing both throwing. Weathers been beautiful so took advantage of it. Thunderstorms this morning so hit the gym real early.

Lift, swim throw, repeat. Meet is Wednesday so I’ll do some light swimming tomorrow, hit the whirlpool, veg out on Tuesday and have my super, top secret pre meet dinner Tuesday night. Next meet after this is May 7 then meets into June and July. Goal for this year is a personal best at each meet. Been throwing too much on strength, form not so good. Should be getting 10% increase from full form vs standing and I’m not. Beginning Thursday all form, speed work. Need to add more distance in swimming as I signed up for the swimming in June in Tennessee. Going to be a fun summer!
Really not much of a secret, huge plate of my spaghetti w/marinara sauce, hot Italian sausage, garlic bread, glass of Chianti during, vanilla ice cream after, and a nightcap of Jameson Irish Whiskey. Carbs. I’ve followed this diet/routine/ritual whenever I could since I competed in the military. I hate to compete with anything on my stomach so I’ll have an energy bar tomorrow on the drive to the meet and that’s it til after the meet. Lot of water during, though.
I don’t know what they do now, but when I lived in NYC the NYC Marathon organizers would sponsor a free spaghetti dinner for the runners on the night before the race. I assume all you can eat!
To make a short story long…
Shot = 1st
discus = 1st
javelin = dropped out
First, best damn venue I’ve thrown at in years. The National Senior Oly will be in Birmingham, Al area next year and this is the T&F facilities we’ll be using.
Second, the Trussville (outside Birmingham) Parks and Rec ran the event this year for the first time and did an exceptionally outstanding job. Students from Trussville High retrieved implements, record score and were just fun to be around.
Third, everyone in Alabama who is my age and has ever thrown or thought about throwing anything decided to regain/relive their wonder years. This I attribute to the publicity the organizers put out this year. 33 throwers in shot, 31 in discus. So we had to do 3 flights, 3 throws each, with top nine going to finals for 3 more throws. Hadn’t counted on this. Threw in the first flight for shot, hour later threw in the first flight of discus, hour later finals of shot, hour after that finals of discus. Hard for the old bones to warm up, cool down, warm up, etc.
Shot put = 2 1/2" pr over last years best. Could have done better, form sucked.
Discus = Wasn’t getting power into the disc. Kept losing it on my release, reversal sucked, I technically refer to it as “no oomph!” So for my last 2 throws changed over to a European style. Last throw, I could tell good, felt the pec stretch, the torque in the hips, the pull. 3 feet pr over last year. And then the reason why Europeans are injured so often came clear. Right side hip, side, lat, all the way up to my trap, cramped like it was in a vice. Finally stretch it all out but was in no condition, mentally or physically, to throw the javelin.
Overall, great day.
Ego building moment of the day, I think. One of the High School kids handling the tape at the shot “you’re 61 sir?” “As of March I was.” “My grandpa’s 60 and he sure doesn’t look like you.” “He’s better lookin than me, huh.” She laughed.
Now that I’ve tasted what I can do with the Euro style there’s no way I’m not going to use it. Just have to ease into it a little slower in training.
Lots of notes for training. Next meet is May 7.
