Given my current stats, would the TM be beneficial? Or am I better served doing something else?
Height: 5’ 11"

With those numbers(good) I’d jump on the 5/3/1 train. This works well…
If still want 5x5 style route I would say madcow 5x5 is preferable over Texas
Texas Method fried me. I didn’t like doing the volume day all at once like that, and my deadlift really missed on alot of growth potential with the 1x5
The worst is when you nearly poo yourself trying to complete the PR on Friday. Then you have Monday to face with 90% of a weight that nearly killed you… for 5 sets!!
Once or twice is okay but when it’s week after week.
That’s what concerns me lol I could probably set a new PR every other week, but every week? My current 5rm is 385. That would try me after 3 weeks
I’m just now getting to the point of having a “decent” deadlift. I don’t want to lose any potential growth with it.
There was a guy on YouTube who modified his Texas Method to do 5x5 Squat, 5x5 Bench/OHP, and then 6x3 Deadlift. I did a DUP template from Greg Knuckols that had a volume day and I couldn’t do it without being in pain the rest of the week.
Realistically, I don’t think you’d be getting a new 5RM every week, maybe for the first few weeks. 5RMs are rough and you’d prolly stall at some point. If you did this, might be wise to leave some in the tank since you are doing 5x5 a few days later.
If you like the way the heavy 5s and lighter 5x5s look you could check out Wendler’s 5’s Progression.
It’s percentage based, so instead of ramping to a new 5 rep max every week, you would work up to pre programmed, progressively heavier heavy set of 5.
Basically, you need a coach. You need a running start and then you set PRs for 2 to 6 weeks then you need to start adjusting - playing with both the volume and intensity days to continue setting PRs or you’re gonna have a miserable time.
Yeah pretty much this. Especially starting light.
Exactly like this. Eventually I had to modify it so much that it wasn’t Texas Method anymore. I was doing all my volume days on a different day and ditched the 5RMs, so I was just doing a basic 5x5.
My progress and recovery were so slow that I started considering TRT and got bloodwork done. After I got a coach, I never needed TRT.
So in other words, the Texas method is not all that great. It’s too much work on two days, with a pointless “recovery” day in the middle.
Either hire a coach or look at some of the different 5/3/1 templates. Something that has you squatting and benching at least twice a week would be good.
