Critique my Texas Method

I’ve ran the first week of this program and my goal is to simply get as strong as I can for my sport (wrestling) since it is the offseason. What do you think?

Week 1:

Sunday (Volume):
Squat (90%) - 5x5
Clean and Press (90%) - 8x3
Romanian Deadlift - 3x5

Monday (Assistance):
Barbell Row - 3x5
Weighted Towel Pull-up - 3x5
Weighted Ring Dip - 3x5

Tuesday (Light):
Squat (75%) - 2x5
Bench Press (75%) - 3x5
Barbell Curl - 3x10

Thursday (Intensity):
Squat - 5RM
Clean and Press - 1RM
Deadlift - 3RM

Week 2:

Sunday (Volume):
Squat (90%) - 5x5
Bench Press (90%) - 5x5
Romanian Deadlift - 3x5

Monday (Assistance):
Barbell Row - 3x5
Weighted Towel Pull-up - 3x5
Close-Grip Bench Press - 3x5

Tuesday (Light):
Squat (75%) - 2x5
Clean and Press (85%) - 5x3
Barbell Curl - 3x10

Thursday (Intensity):
Squat - 5RM
Bench Press - 5RM
Deadlift - 3RM

Holy hell! 5x5 at 90% ??? 90% is typically a 3-4 RM, and you plan on doing it for 5x5? Even 8x3 @ 90% could be ridiculous unless the bar weight still isn’t very high. 5x3 at 85% C&P doesn’t seem crazy “light” either. But I guess you can tweak all of these percentages if you find they’re too much.

Also, I’d be inclined to drop the assistance day and just disperse all that throughout the rest of the week unless you have a specific reason for programming it that way.

I think he means 90% of his 5x5 max.

It is a little condensed though and I agree with trying to put the assistance on other days. Another thing you could do is google thoughts on the texas method split. It has a nice 4 day routine.

Look up John Phung’s blog. He’s pretty much one of the more successful lifter out there training Texas Method

Im sure he means 90% of 5x5 max. The assistance day is similar to what the guys at 70sbig recommend. I always had an assistance day on my day 2 when I ran TM. The TM advanced book from that site its a good read if you are running TM, gives a bunch of modifications that you can do to keep progressing on TM.
