Teenager Killed Trying to Bench 240

I just saw this on the news last night here in Houston. Read the full story here.

So newbs, be careful, and don’t be stupid.

Bullpup

195 and he couldn’t get up 240?

Not too mention the bad form with the barbell over the neck!

That sucks that he died so young though.

Should have just bought a power rack.

Just imagining that makes me cringe.

I did the same thing when I was a kid

When racking the weight, I just missed the rack, caught it as it dipped down and inch and dislocated my right arm … down the weight goes. Hard to drop a weight faster than by removing one arm. I think it hit my collarbone though but ended on my neck, also, unlike this guy, I still had one arm to roll it down my chest. Hurt the ribs, but man did it crush my abdomen once it got off my ribs.

Stupid stupid stupid me - I learnt my lesson but hope everyone else learns it too.

A powerrack is essential for the home, or some other method.

This kid, my guess is he experienced compete muscle failure, not wussy failure that most people talk about, but complete failure when your muscles are firing but can’t put out any effort. He could have passed out as well. The poor bastard.

To the guy who said 240 at 195 isn’t much, well, 60 pounds will kill you if you are utterly exhausted and drop it on your throat. Even for the best benchers if they have gone to exhaustion - which of course you shouldn’t be doing. Who knows what he was doing. Maybe the “train until depressed” routine.

Judging by your icon cringing isn’t something you shy away from :).

Too bad for the kid, feel sorry.

Yes, I saw that last night.

It reminded me of one time when I was 14. I was benching in the backyard, alone and doing high rep sets. My muscles completely gave out and the bar was stuck on my chest. I remember pushing with my left hand and pulling with my right. This allowed me to slide off the bench.

Tragic and sad. Poor kid.

D

Sounds like a pretty sad story to me. i did this once as a teenager and luckily was able to push the bar off to the side. Pretty scary moment as I was home alone.

Fair enough, with the title of the article I falsely assumed he was going for a max. More than likely it was for reps.

Yes, very tragic.

I’ll have to put in an extra rep for him.

On another note, look at the kid cleaning in the second half of the video (black shorts, white A-shirt). His form is TERRIBLE! They need better weight coaching.

Damn, that’s horrible. I remember that story that Dan John gave also when a man was benching and couldn’t get the weight up and his kids were around while he was training and he died while benching,(he suffercated) as his kids were right there playing. Horrible.

Does anyone have more information about what happen?
Did he drop the bar on his throat?
Or did the bar slip out of his hands and onto his throat?

BTW: That had to be fucked up to find your pride and joy stretched out on a bench.

Any bets on Congress trying to pass a bill banning weight programs for high school athletes?

My condolences for his family and friends.

God, that is just F*ed up. Really… For the Kid and for the family.

Pretty much all of who lift at one time or another had a few close calls while Benching. I had my share of them when I was 17 and 18.

I hope not…

Do these deaths come from the tools who put those stupid placeholders on the bar? If they can’t hold the bar straight enough to keep the plates from falling off, they should probably lift less weight. Because when that weight was crushing them, I bet they wished the plates would fall off.

I’ve never lifted heavy (less than 6 reps) on a bench press without a partner before, ever.

Man, I’ve wiggled out of more weight after failed attempts. I got trapped under 275 and kind let the bar rest on my chest a bit and then heaved it over to the right side. Spotters are great for this I hear.

Why does it say I started this thread??

I am waiting for the investigation on whether steroids were to blame.

Wonder if he had collars on the bar?

What’s your point, besides being an ultra bad ass?

No two people are exactly alike have the same strengths and the situation and placing do you know if they were the same? Did anyone read the full article it isn’t very long. From a complete muscle failure to a slip to a combination of many things that weight fell on this thought, 240 pound barbell on the throat, not the chest, the throat.

As for the other comment about being 195 and not being able to lift 240, do you understand the circumstances of what went on, I don’t fully, it just seems people are trying to interject their bad ass stories into a thread that doesn’t relate.
