Welcome back PCH.
You still have a lot of strength, and 17 pages of log says that yes, you are able to have some fun in the gym and just see what you can do.

Hi!!! Glad you are back!

Oh there are plenty of women around here that actually fight. Have you met Miss Parker yet? Yowza!

Thanks for the welcome! I’m only on page 2 of your log and already impressed.

Hi! Nice to see you outside of TK, lol. I love how random that thread is.

Yeah, it’s easy to forget that moving people around is a permutation of resistance training. Though I’ve got the wrestler muscles in place, all the pulling, my pushing motions are really weak. If you extend your arms in BJJ, you lose them. It’s something I have to keep in mind while playing. Push ups :frowning:

Greenie!

hi pch - glad things are healing up. I don’t get all of it but I get the general idea. I’m probably imagining the same 3 moves in my head all the time.

omaplata:

Finally got a chance to watch the video, that’s the omaplata for sure. The part where he says “then I pass my leg over” is what I was talking about. Once you pass the leg over, you can flex your foot and catch your shin under his neck. Then use your shin on his neck to lift him up an our of the way if he’s trying to be heavy on your bottom leg.

Once again wandered my way into the weight room today. Have I mentioned how much I absolutely love the new gyms weight room? It’s a separate room all by itself in the basement, and it has old actually made out of metal weights. There are even some of those old timey round on both ends weights! Because it’s so out of date (the circuit is upstairs in the cardio room) there aren’t that many people down there. There is nothing funner than having the whole room to myself. I get to take my shoes off and do all the silly things I want without a slew of cardio kids watching.

YTLW
Ankle Rehab stuff

Goblet Squats 100 3x12 (the biggest dumbbell was 100 so I just upped the reps)
Push ups :frowning: 3x10
Plank 30sec x4
Wide Grip Lat Pull down 85 5x5

I think I’m just going to go with doing 2 thing I hate and 2 things I like each time I lift. Hate - plank & push up Like - Squat and LP.

So, I mentioned this in TK but not all of you are there. I keep feeling my quads really kick in during the planks. Other than having a weak core, is it an indication of me doing something wrong? Is it an indication of a drastic form issue?

Is your bum popping up at all? When I feel my quads during planks I make an effort to tighten my core even more and lengthen my body (if that makes sense) and it usually transfers more to my core then…tho your quads are flexed too when doing planks so maybe thats all your feeling…as long as your not caving or popping you are A O Kay  HTH

I asked one of the guys to check my form and my butt doesn’t appear to be out of line. The general consensus seems to agree with you, quads are part of the chain so they’re potentially going to hurt. I’ll think about my core more just to work on the whole mind muscle thing, but I’m not really concerned about it anymore. Thanks for the help!

Went to class last night. It turned out to be one of those classes that leaves you thinking you know nothing.

We’ve always done these to warm up, but recently our instructor has decided we should do them backwards, and boy do I suck at them. I have to actively think about each limb moving. It’s incredibly frustrating, because we do them as line drills so I get to hold up the whole line. I’m going to have to practice it. Talk about looking weird in the gym.

(to be continued, I want to see if the vid posts)

funny, you have to practice your warmup, lol…

looks crazy!! gl with that

For class we did Americana escapes. If youre early, drop the elbow and bump. If late, sweep him and tuck the arm hard. If he’s got an Americana from side control, shrimp towards him and wegde the grip loose with your knee. I got the escapes ok but then we did technical training.

We started in mount and just had to hold the guy down while he tried to escape. First he tried to escape like a technical bjj guy, then like an untrained person. The first guy, I held down fine for both, but the second guy I couldn’t pin for the life of me. I could stop his elbow escape but not his bump. I kept getting swept, ugh. Now I remember I was supposed to sprawl but in the moment I was just overwhelmed. This is really basic, and I should have it down pat by now.

The next drill was to defend the single leg. So we started with him having your leg and you trying to not get taken down. I suck at stand up and managed to just get taken down repeatedly for 4 min. To top it all off I jammed my toes on my gimpy foot. Then we started with him on your hips and it was a repeat of the same sadness. I don’t always want to sit to guard though, so I guess it’s good to be working on stand up.

I was ready to just go home after class, but I stayed and rolled a bit. It was mostly just play, but I need to work on defending the open guard, and holding my chokes for longer. It takes time for big egos to tap.

So…much…jargon…it’s like walking into your foreign language class and you understand about every fourth word of what your teacher is saying, so you get the basic gist, but you know you’re still lightyears away from being fluent. Guess this means I should study more, huh?

I like shrimp.

…Wow, and all I did was go to the grocery store.

Meanwhile, those goblet squats are wicked. I’m so sorry that your gym ONLY goes up to 100, so you can’t do even MORE :stuck_out_tongue:

Sorry, I don’t really know what to do about the jargon. When I used to try to actually explain everything, my posts for each class were unbearably long and even then people didn’t get it. I logged in combat sports for a while and they got a lot of it, but even then jargon is kinda gym specific. A lot of moves don’t have names so gyms make up their own for them. Like that warm up, we call it the Jacare, who know what other gyms call it. I try to throw in a vid so there’s at least a visual for some aspect of class. If there’s any of the jargon, you’re curious about I’ll explain.

Oh, and shrimping in the bjj world

I never read anything here over a few sentences, but I read most of your bjj notes

Thanks!

Oh I completely forgot, we learned the coolest thing in class. Have any of you been watching ultimate fighter? Apparently when guys are pinned against the cage, GSP keeps yelling control the wrist, so someone asked about it. It turns out that if you can get ahold of the wrist of the underhooking arm, he can’t keep you pinned. It worked really well, push the elbow down, slide down the arm to the wrist then turn out to that side. I don’t know if it’s common knowledge, but I was impresssed. You guys should try it, have some one try to pin you against the wall. Grab their wrist and slide out against the wall towards their wrist. They can’t pin you.
