My wife keeps prodding me to do yoga, saying I need the balance. She is probably right, but I still don’t know if I would have that much courage. Kudos to you for trying it.
If you’re looking for yoga that’s not too bad (although hard as hell) and you can do in the embarassment of your own home, check out the YRG (Yoga for Regular Guys) vids. Diamond Dallas Page!
The YRG20 video is more than enough for me. I’m shakey and sweaty by the end of that and there’s a 40 and 60 minute version 8)
I love your log. It’s such an entertaining read. And being an entertaining writer is truly a talent.
Yoga is great. But I haven’t been going because my hyperflexibility actually hurts my lifting. Probably would be good for most powerlifters, though.
And my daughter just recently listed ways I’m embarrassing, including singing in the car and wearing my hair in ponytails. I’m too old for that, she informed me. So don’t feel bad.
Hi BH! First time in here and I was thoroughly entertained, like snap said, by your entertaining writing style. I particularly liked the bit about the positives of your daughter doing sports being that she’ll be able to carry you. ![]()
I’m excited to follow your lead up to the meet in April.
Frozenkilt,
Nice picture, unfortunately nobody in the class looks like that, I might be closest. As for the yoga video it’s a good idea but I went back this weekend (twice) for more yoga-ing, I can honestly say I am not getting the hang of it but I will keep going until I do or there are enough signatures on the inevitable petition to ban me.
Joe and Pete,
I sweat more doing this (in a normal temperature room) than I do on any straight weight day + I sleep like a baby at night afterwards, I hope that means it’s working, I haven’t become more flexible yet but I have learned how to breathe better so there’s that.
KP,
It’s nice to know you’re not living up to your child’s expectations isn’t it? At least my 7 year old still thinks I’m awesome I should capitalize on that before it’s too late.
Cholo,
Thank you very much it’s always nice to hear a compliment.
Missed a few days of logging stuff in so here goes.

Done lifting for about 4-5 weeks, in addition to my long delayed vacation I am getting cortisone shots in my elbow and have been told by my doc at the VA that there is something bad going on in there with my ligament and nerve (they did a very uncomfortable nerve conduction study with needles and electricity and it appears my nerve is being compressed by my damaged ligament making my fingers/grip weak and sleepy), I meet with the doctor again in 4 weeks to find out the results, this will more than likely not require surgery if I do what I am told so I will see you all in a month or so.
Well hang around and keep us up dated on how the recovery is going.
Joe,
No problem, not really that much else to do.
Sat.
My birthday was yesterday 3/10, and while I sat around being fat and mopey my wife asked “why don’t you go to the gym, that always cheers you up?” I responded with “the Dr. Said I couldn’t.” and proceeded to act like I was 40 years younger than I am, my 7 year old then told me to “Stop acting like a baby!”. At this point my wife pointed out that while I can’t lift for a month, I can do just about anything else so;
The most cardio I have done since the Army happened:
Treadmill backwards/uphill-15 minutes
18" Box Jumps- 30,30,26 (or so I may have done fewer)
sand bag drags- 60 feet up and down the little hill out back for 10 minutes
Eliptical- 15 minutes
Abs- 4 sets to temporary failure on leg raises
Sunday
Owwwww.
Speed walk- 10 minutes out/10 minutes back
Abs- Crunches bunch of sets lost track
18" Box Jumps-20,20,20,20
Walked the Dog (it’s not a euphemism it’s a Shih-tzu) 30-40 minutes
Apparently I have been reduced to old people exercise for a bit, but I will see it through, maybe I will fall in love with cardio.
I’ve been really enjoying reading your log…you’re a strong dude. I’m bummed your out of commission…probably a fraction of how bummed you are.
I was laughing at the yoga. I tell people, when you are young, you are strong and agile, like a lion. Now that you’re old, you’re more like an oak tree…still strong, but not much mobility. The yoga sounds like a good idea.
Hoping your back lifting soon!

Good luck with that.
Many of us have been there done that with the no lifting. It’s tough. It sucks. It really, really sucks. But the cardio will help keep you sane.
kp,
I remember there were days in the Army when I used to love running, I think that all ended when I had to run a half-marathon in formation after drinking in Waikiki until 4AM, I ended up getting 2 IV’s on the way to the starting point and I threw up about 200 feet after we started running. Cardio has held a certain horror for me ever since.
greystoke,
Your avatar is ridiculous, the only time people will see that sort of definition in me is during my autopsy.
3/12 Monday
Sand Bag Drags- up and down the hill about 25 times each way
18" Box Jumps- 25,25,20
Treadmill- Backwards Up Hill- 10 minutes
Abs- 3 sets leg raises to failure
Leg Press- 3 sets x 8 Reps
3/13
Fast Walking- 15 minutes out, 15 minutes back (missed my return pace by about 3 blocks.)
Abs- Old Fashioned Sit-Ups- 2 minutes per set 54, 47, 26 (abs are gassed)
Jump Rope (bad idea)- 1min on/2min off- 4 sets probably only jumped 20 times per minute, I need to figure out how to do this with the ankle fusion, I am seriously bored/frustrated 4 days into cardio land.
Sled sprints, do them.
Tore the Plantar Fascia tendon in my right foot, also have some heel spurs. I am guessing now that I should have eased into the cardio. Shit, shit, shit.
dude that sucks. maybe take up knitting?
Sorry to hear about what you are going through, but I think you are using the wrong shoes for running. Try to get fitted for a proper shoes it will make your runs much easier and less painful.

No!
What kind of treatment will this require? Just rest?
damn- sorry to hear about your foot
Pete,
I would but it’s probably to taxing on my joints.
George,
I actually don’t (can’t) run I just walk fast dragging things, I’m pretty sure that when I broke my ankles the first time I also damaged my heel and Achilles so the “good” foot was just a ticking time bomb+ I am fat as hell.
KP,
YES!!! In this case I am wearing a boot and icing the crap out of the foot when it is not covered up. The neat thing is that I am in the boot for 4 to maybe 6 weeks, which dovetails nicely with my elbow/ligament/nerve debacle in my left arm. I am essentially being forced to be even more inactive than usual. So all things considered I will be fine by the end of April I suppose for both issues.
KM,
thanks, it’s not as bad as I thought it would be so I am already planning my “forced rest”, it’s going to be really difficult (sarcasm).
Bored off my ass

Been there. Done that. Too many times with the injuries. I feel for you.
