Nerves are in full effect now, all my gear is packed, going to bed at 9pm heading to the meet at 7am, anything I should remember to bring? I have extra clothes, snacks, protein bars, gatorade, extra bench shirt, wraps etc. What may I be missing? I have my video camera ready so I will post whatever happens for all to see. Wish me luck.

Kill it my friend.
worst night ever, no sleep, head pounding blah blah blah, it’s 3 am, alarm set for 5:15 this does not bode well
9/11/11
Well I won my division (old fatasses) I was really tired, sick and sore (nobody cares I know) so I figured I would start out light and raw and work up, I did the following:
Squat-
405 -got 3 white lights and a “no lift” I showed the judges the video, they were unimpressed, they disavowed any knowledge of the 3 clearly visible white lights. They then tell me I got the lift, I don’t believe them and proceed with caution. I will post both squat videos. Best part was spotter holding my cane.
425- 3 whites, funny thing happened here, a game changer for me as far as strategy. My brother pointed out that all my competition had missed their 1st and 2nd attempts, yet they were still increasing weight, so I passed on my 3rd attempt. All but one bombed out right there on the 1st lift of the meet.
Bench-
405- 3 whites
425- 3 whites
455- I have never experienced a shirt blowout until today. I will post the video on here, the weight flies up and 6-8" off my chest it blows up on the right arm seam. Oh well, I am the only person in my class left now.
Deadlift
My opener is 505, I am now scared that I will bomb (as I am the last man standing), a guy in the warm-up room says that I can change my opener before my flight starts. I grab my cane and hobble down the hall my new opener is
425- 3 whites. I pass on my next two lifts.
It may seem kind of weak to back into a win, but as this was my first meet and I felt crappy, I am happy to not have bombed out. I went 5/6 ( because I ducked lifts I know)and I had a great time (aside from feeling poorly) I am now a “competitive” powerlifter having had my fat ass in a singlet in front of strangers. My goal is an extra 450-500 total in Philly in 8 weeks.
old age and experience…
well done!
I’m such an ass, the people that ran the meet were awesome and very willing to answer all my newbie questions, I used a monolift for the first time and it was a great time.
Nicely done big man

Not at all. A win is a win. Strategy can make the difference between winning and losing. Congratulations!
Can’t believe your shirt blew out and eager to see your vids.
Sleep now!
awesome work buddy. you let intelligence, understanding of your own capabilities at that moment (not based on your best day in the gym 2 months prior), and strategy dictate your performance, not your overblown, bloated ego. Me, I usually rely on my overblown bloated ego and either win overall or bomb entirely. Smart lifters like Ms O, Snapper, G1, etc have better lifting careers because they were smart like you:)
welcome aboard btw, don’t you feel sexy in that singlet, moose knuckles and all?
Nice work. Doing what you need to do and nothing more is a perfectly acceptable strategy and since you have another meet in eight weeks it makes sense.
Damn fine work.
Thanks for the support I uploaded 2 videos in the video section, for some reason I cannot get the others to load.
Back at it today, the benefit of not going really hard and heavy is that I can start training again.

11/3/11
I decided to take a little two week break from training, it turned into 45 days or so. I spent the last 6 weeks playing guitar (my wife and kids bought me a nice PRS for competing in September it would be a shame to not use it.), coaching football and (shocked voice) Swimming!! I woke up this morning and decided it was time to start training again, and this time, “for realz” I’m going to stick with it for long enough to actually reach my goals. Since my lifting partner/brother is busy “occupying” K-Street, I will be training raw until I find someone trustworthy enough to not kill me.

And it was exercise just to get to the computer to log that, right?
kp,
more than you could imagine. I actually haven’t moved since I typed it.
11/8/11
Overcame the DOMS enough to “attack” legs again today (not sure why) since my shoulders were more sore than my legs I figured “Why not?”. I found out the answer to that question super fast.
Squats- w/up- 315x5, 365x3, 405x3, 445x2, 465x2, 485x2
Front Squats- 185x8, 225x8, 245x5x5
RDL- 315x5, 345x5, 365x3

This did nothing to put me in a better state of mind.
