Switching Bars/Main Movements

Jim or anyone,

I see that you recommend the use of the Swiss bar and Safety Squat bar to maintain shoulder health. What would be a good way to switch from using a straight bar to using these? I’ve been using these from time to time during my BBB assistance so I’m pretty familiar with the technique differences. Right now I’m doing the 7 week rotation from “Beyond 5/3/1” and my plan is to switch to the Swiss bar on my main sets of bench and OHP and the Safety Squat bar on my main squat sets on week 6 (2nd 5/3/1 week). From here I will recalculate my maxes based on those sets, take my deload week and start another cycle with the new exercises.

Also what is your insight on using the trap bar for deadlifting as opposed to a straight bar for shoulder health?

Just find your max(1rm or rep) with that bar then recalculate using that. And I know Jim says the trap bar is an acceptable substitute for deads, but I do not know anything on their effect on shoulder health. I would assume that it wouldn’t be as rough on them, being that your holding the weight at your sides in a more natural “anatomical” position

Thanks!

Yeah that’s what I’m planning on doing. I’ll use the different bar for my main sets and use the rep max calculator to figure up a new 1RM and TM for that bar. The difference in weight will probably be minimal but anything worth doing is worth doing right you know.

The trap bar is used for back health (at least for me). I guess if supination hurts your shoulder it can also be helpful - but if that’s the case use a hook grip. As for your first question, it doesn’t make sense to me.

I’m switching my main movements (bench, squat and OHP) from straight bar to the Swiss bar and S/S Yoke bar for less wear and tear on my shoulders. I was wondering if the TM should be recalculated for the change of bars. I’m figuring the difference will be minimal so it’s a non-issue but am still looking for advice.

Of course it should be recalculated. Why wouldn’t it?
