Surge Workout Fuel + Rowing Endurance Test

Hi Coach,

I am a heavy weight rower. Every season, we kick off the first day by doing a 30 minute ergometer test for distance. I’d really love to take advantage of Surge Workout fuel before this years test, and I was wondering just how to maximize the benefits.

The erg test is all out for 30 mins, so it’s not like I’ll be able to sip on SWF during the workout. Should I start sipping it -60 mins? -30? Also, would there be any reason not to stack SWF with another pre-workout supp like Power Drive for an event like this? Concerns include cramping, liquid sloshing in stomach, vomit the color of Biotest Intensified Liquid Flavoring, etc…

Any help would be much appreciated.

I’m up for hearing from anyone with experience in this not just Coach Thibs. Anyone use SWF before an endurance type test?

Thanks,

Dart.

Obviously, you want to experiment with this before your test, but I’d down 1 to 2 servings 15 minutes prior.

Yeah, for a 30 minutes test 2 servings would be ideal. I might have him take it a bit earlier, something like half 25 minutes prior and half 15 minutes prior to facilitate absorption even more. But that is splitting hair.

For OPTIMAL performance I would actually mix it up with a SPIKE shot and 1 serving of Power Drive.

COACH THIB’S PERFORMANCE DRINK
2 servings of Workout Fuel
1/2 spike shot (1 bottle is 2 servings)
1 serving Power Drive
750ml of water

Thanks Coach, that’s great stuff. I’m really pumped about using Surge Workout Fuel this season. We usually row hard for 1.5 hours on the water, intervals, middle distance, or long pieces, depends on the time of year, and then bring it back to land for a lift circuit. Lifting after cardio is brutal/ not my preference, but we do: deadlift, front squat, bench pull. We lift 3 days a week as a team and Using your peri workout protocols helped me tons last year. I got some nice dead lift PR’s which I’m excited to break this year using SWF.

Thanks again,

Dart.

Let us know how the test goes(and wether you chuck :>), as a former rower and regular erg user I’m intrigued about SWF. Good Luck.

Personally I’d say to test this out prior to your actual 30 minute piece. Like I tell my kids that I coach, don’t change your nutrition up radically prior to races. No need to place unneeded stress on your digestive system that you may or may not respond well to. Always test it first considering this will most likely determine your boat placement until at least the next seat race or erg test.

As a side note to Thib, having half a can of spike could possibly result in a failed drug test if taken prior to a test (NCAA, WADA both ban caffeine pre-race). Many drug tests by USRowing (mens governing body), and the NCAA take place before/after actual races and erg tests.

Caffeine is not currently a WADA-banned substance.

Thanks,
The erg test is strictly within the boat house, so no worry about drug tests in this case. I’ve got about 2.5 weeks of training left before the first day of official practice so plenty of time to see how I respond.

On another note Liquid Mercury, I think I saw one of your other posts where you said that the concept of proper nutrition in the rowing world was all out of wack. I couldn’t agree more. Our coach had a sports nutritionist come talk to our team. Some of the nuggets of wisdom she imparted to us were using poptarts before workouts and peanut butter sandwiches for recovery…

Hmm must of been mistaken by that. I know I’ve had issues with NCAA testers giving me crap about it in the past as well as other athletes.

EDIT: After doing some research looks like it was banned by the IOC and WADA up until 2004.

Bakhaavaa Buidaa of Mongolia was stripped of his silver medal in judo at the 1972 Games in Munich due to elevated levels of caffeine. Alex Watson, a fencer from Australia who competed in the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul was also banned due to an elevated level of caffeine in his system.

It is still currently tested for by WADA and other doping organizations so that if there appears to be an increase in abuse during competition, it will go back on the banned list.
