Surge + Protein?

After reading some of the other threads concerning Surge, energy drinks, Dextrose, and Pre-Workouts I’ve decided to give Surge a try.

I’m currently using a homebrew version of the Old Surge Recovery formula, using the old paradigm, in conjunction with an energy drink. Here’s what I do:

Before leaving for the gym I mix one scoop of hydrolized protein with 3tbs of Dextrose and 5G of D-ribose. Drink before leaving for the gym. ~30 min drive to the gym

During my workout I sip on an energy drink. I finish the whole thing during the workout.

after i get home i do another shake using one scoop of hydrolized protein with 2tbs of Dextrose, 5G of D-ribose, 5g Creatine, and a scoop of L-Arginine.

I’m looking to add surge because of some comments that others have used it to replace energy drinks/pre-workouts.

Is there any benefit to adding a scoop of the hydrolized protein to the new surge formula?

Based on the instructions it looks like I should mix one scoop of surge in 20oz of water, start drinking 15 min before i hit the gym, then sip on it during the workout and up to an hour afterwards. So does this mean only one scoop for both pre and post workout?

How do you guys handle post workout protein intake?

Thanks

I wouldn’t see a point to this, assuming you’re using it for training fuel per it’s intended design.

I just stuck with a Metabolic Drive shake when I was done with the workout. I figured I had enough carbs from the Surge pre/during training.

Thanks Pwn,

This helps a lot. Should make my protocol much simpler.

Any thoughts on Surge pre BJJ?

I’ve been drinking surge pre and intra BJJ workouts since I started. Genuinely feel like I have more energy to keep going. It’s especially evident at open mats, vs. when I just have water/electrolytes.

Thanks dude. I’ll try it pre/peri BJJ as well

Just had my first serving of Surge. Pretty interesting. The Lemon Drop flavor is great. The Beta Alanine was just enough to get a little tingle in my arms, but my face didn’t itch and my eyes didn’t feel like they were going to pop out of my head like with other preworkouts. I do think i may have drank it a little too fast, as i was out halfway thru my workout. All in all, it had all the upsides of a good pre without the downsides. I didn’t miss the caffeine as much as i thought i would. I’ll try another serving before BJJ tomorrow evening. So far, i’m a fan.

Looks like you’re already doing it, but another vote for @T3hPwnisher’s protocol. I also don’t stress what the protein meal after my workout is when I’m using Surge. I’m very 90s mentally, so my default is I have to drink the fastest-digesting protein and carbs immediately after my last rep. With Surge, I figure that’s taken care of, and I just eat what I was going to eat next: most often it’s eggs and potatoes (which would have stressed me before with the fats), second most often is 2 scoops of MD.

Thanks Train,

yea, I’m still caught in that 90’s thought paradigm as well as evidenced by my Home Brew Surge Recovery formula.

I’m still going to keep using the hydro whey post workout for a bit, then try something like MD and see if my results vary.

Gave Surge a try before BJJ last night. Not bad. The Beta Alanine tingles were a little “odd” and seemed to make my arms a little more sensitive during drilling, but nothing that I couldn’t overlook. I seemed to have more gas in the tank.

One thing I REALLY liked was the lack of caffeine. Sometimes I have issues going to sleep after a hard BJJ session when I’ve had a high Mg energy drink before practice. No issues last night. I slept like the dead.

I also ran the numbers and it looks like Surge is going to be more cost effective than canned energy drinks if I’m buying them onesy-twosy at the gas station. If I bought them by the case it may be a different story, but I’m rarely thinking that far ahead.
