Sudden Weakness with Pushing Exercises

70…% hand strength when healed
Never used straps ,I don’t think a strap will make up 30%?
Point is:don’t put any weird strength losses.

I think you would be surprised as to how much the straps can help. You have to play around with them a bit but there are different kinds. Straight, figure 8, and even hooks. If I wanted to continue deadlifting I would give them a go.

The strongman competitors use figure 8 straps, and many don’t even put their thumbs around the bar, and have the bar sitting in the tips of their fingers. I would guess they could hold about 25% of the weight in the same manner (only in the finger tips).

You basically have unlimited grip with figure 8s.

Not sure if that’s Gina work, just had carpel tunnel surgery.
But after a year maybe…

Update. Had a PT check it out. Apparently my left rib is too high. I got some drills to do to improve it. Lots of muscles around the upper lat and traps are much more sore on the left side.

Just had a terrible deadlift session, so it is impacting more than just bench. Just feel weak. Hopefully I’ll be back soon.

Ever had a back X-Ray? I did and it revealed mild levoscoliosis. For years I’d mess myself up overhead pressing. I’d get this crippling pain that would last for a week between my shoulder blades. That X-Ray explained a lot. It’s possible that the mild curvature could mean I’ve brought some maladaptive traits to other exercises too, maybe leading me to be injured over time.

No I haven’t. I’m not in pain though is the thing. Just can’t keep my shoulders in place. I think it is muscle related mostly.

Even just the bar causes my left side to move upward on bench. Only at the bottom though. I’m fairly decent at the bench too, so I know what it should look and feel like.

So, I just diagnosed with Hypertrophic Facet Arthropathy in my L4 through S1. I’m just lucky that way I guess.

I’m meeting with an orthopedic specialist soon, so I’ll get more answers at that time. Until then I was wondering if anyone with expertise or experience with this diagnosis could tell me if this will limit any athletic activities or substantially reduce quality of life into the future?

I should note, according to the Radiologist’s report, I haven’t lost any vertebral height and there was no noted degenerative loss of disc space.

I can’t tell you, but I sure hope not as I am also suspecting my issue (which hasn’t improved) is nerve related.

I am thinking I need to see a sports doctor. The PT and Chiros haven’t seemed to help anything.

I swear my chiro made my cervical issue worse. The physical therapy I went through helped many of the smaller muscle groups in my upper back, but only the prednisone improved the pain.

I ignored this lower back pain for over a year, until it got to the point where I was experiencing numb glutes, tingling and stabbing pain in my toes. I got an XRay and it showed the degeneration of the vertebral facets in my lumbar spine. From what I’ve read it’s not uncommon though.

i had a similar issue years ago i pinched a nerve in my neck and my left tricep and some other muscles got hella weak. nothing hurt i was just weak mainly with pressing exercises. probly from just going too heavy and using shtty form too often. took about a year to fully get back to normal. im stronger now than before i hurt myself. make sure your pulling and pressing musculature is balanced.

Did you have to do anything special, just for your neck?

Did you do any special rehab, or just kind of “Start Over” doing the same pulls and presses as before, just with less weight?

Yep, I should actually update as I am not the OP, but am recovering from just this. I think I posted about 2-2.5 months ago on it.

I had almost no recovery for about a month, then quick recovery after that, but not where I was. Before injury I put up 385 lbs on bench, after the injury my 1RM was right about 185 lbs. Yesterday I did 285 lbs for a pretty easy single. I am probably able to do over 300 again, but still a bit depressing as I was trying to do 4 plates.

Initially, my back had a bit of weakness, but nothing compared to the triceps. My chin ups were a bit harder, and lopsided looking. They look back to normal now.

I am hoping for that 4 plate bench in a year, but we will see.

Sorry for the long delay, didn’t get a notification.

I had to go to PT and I did “start over” with lower weights. I’m back to normal now, in my cervical spine anyway.

I recently took about two weeks off of work because I was having excruciating sciatic pain. I took prednisone again, high dose this time, and started going to PT, which seems to be helping.

So, the problem I originally wrote about completely resolved itself after the prednisone and PT. However, I now have a new and more concerning issue.

Earlier today I was installing a pet door into my sliding screen door. I was putting the sliding screen back on track when I realized I had no sensation from the bottom of my ribcage through my knee on my left side. I went to the ER and spent six hours there. The MRI tech had left for the day, so we could only do x-rays. The attending physician stated that my thoracic spine showed deterioration far beyond what he expected for someone of my age and fitness level. He said the numerous disc compressions throughout my thoracic and lumbar spine could be responsible for the sudden loss of sensation across a large area. He also said that more concerning was that I also have loss of sensation through the left side of my scrotum. He told me if I experienced incontinence of any kind that I needed to immediately come back to the ER.

Not going to lie, this is scaring the shit out of me. I have to wait until Monday for a spinal surgeon consult and an MRI at some point. I think my lifting career might be officially over and I’m feeling very depressed. Sorry for the long vent….
