Strongman Training-What to Do?

Hey All,
I’ve got my own gym with weights and barbells and thats about it. I want to get stronger, Strongman style. What are routines, ideas and concepts I should know to get stronger, Strongman style. I have a feeling my ‘core’ strength is down and I want to get stronger all around.

I have a backyard, but no specialized equipment.

How did you start out training to be strong?

I would make sure to work on your base strength first before worrying about weird equipment and routines…

Squat, bench, deadlift, row, oh press etc

i’m no expert but i do compete in strongman…i would say that you want to focus on your basic heavy lifts-squats, deads, overheads instead of bench, not saying you cant bench but OH is more imortant in strongman…also deads are more important than sqts imo due to in strongman you have to pick evrything up…you should be able to find tires for free, theres plenty of places you can farmers, logs, and axels, and stones…read elitefts there are a few strongman training articles on there…hope that helped

Check out the Road to strongman thread and the westside/PLing thread both have people posting their strongman training, check out www.ontariostrongman.ca and click resources, some good info.

A basic westisde or powerlifting approach works for strongman just do overhead instead of bench pressing.

See if you can find a group of guys near you to train events with or start collecting/buying/building equipment

Check out www.nastrongmaninc.com. There are a ton of Strongman events in Illinois, and I’m sure you could learn a lot from watching and talking to the guys there, and probably find a group to train with in your area.

Like others said get a strong base with the core lifts OH pressing is Paramount as Is a strong back STRONG back and core.

Start collecting just heavy stuff and start lifting it carrying it etc.Check out the numerous link they supplied. There are a lot of great threads here the ones they listed as well as one by Brad Cordoza, the westside PLing thread gags and I are training on. and just work damn hard.

You need to get dog strong and as well keep a condition base not traditional cardio per say but be able to go all the hell out for 60-90 seconds.

If you live near St. Anne, IL (about 60 miles South of Chicago) you are welcome to train here.
We also make Strongman Equipment if you need some toys.
I’d be happy to help out any way I can for you. Feel free to PM me.

Hope this helps,
