Strongman Noob Needs Info

Hello all, I 'm new to this forum but used to powerlift competitivly several years ago. I am again getting the urge to compete in a strength sport so I thought about trying strongman.
I’m a lean, lankyish 200lbs so there’s 0 chance of competing against you behemoths out there. I did hear of a few contests with 205lb class which would be perfect for me…I think.
Where can I find a link to information about upcoming strongman contests in my area (West Virginia) as well as descriptions of the events and amounts of weight used for the implements and so forth? I’d like to know what the events are going to be so I’ll know if I’m even in the ballpark strengthwise or if I’ll totally bomb out…lol.

Thanks

Jon

I am new to the strongman game too. Just started implement training. Basically, no matter what template you work with, you need to learn the stones, the log and the tire flip especially. The other events like the yoke and conan’s wheel can be trained in the gym so I am told.

As far as training goes: overhead work, posterior chain work, core work and grip work are very important. You can basically tweak a DE/ME Westside-style split to strongman needs. Just sub in overhead stuff for benching and really emphasize deadlifting and so on. There’s good strongman beginner info on ontariostrongman.ca and elitefts for your perusal. Also, check out the road to strongman thread here on the forums.

Phil Phister lives in west virginia. you should find out where he trains.

couple more links for you

www.ontariostrongman.com

both have some good info.

Try to start training the events as soon as possible, the training should be fairly similar to powerlifting other than doing overhead pressing instead of benchpress. Also alot of the time the lifts will be for reps with a certain amount of weight instead of a 1rep max.

as stated before check out www.nastrongmaninc.com for umpcoming contests.

Some contests have a 200lb divison even a 175lb divison.
The most common are 231lb’s and under (LW) and 231+ (HW). I think these are also the only two nationally recognized weight classes. So if you are serious about this you might think about bulking up to around 220-230 at some point.

I am also a Strongman newbie and am about 185 and plan on competeing in the 231 and under divison.

Hi nice work making this step #1 sign up and do it youll mlearn a tion and meet ppl

Youve got some great advice and links I have a few very quick ones

training #1 importance aside from gettinmg your hands on the implements. Train that back when your done training back train it some More then train your grip and more back and core strongman is a very very very back dominant sport Im lucky in that that is my strong point but im getting killed by the Log pressing at this point due to shoulder but I nail it no worries.

and grip man I got a damn good grip from PLing can easliy hold 750 plus barbell SHORT TERM long enough for a DL etc this is different farmers etc you need to have endurance as well.

Just start hitting it hard and come back here join the few theradas we have rolling me in the west side training thread the fellas in the strongman thread. Dan Johns stuff is great as well his DVD’s like carried away are all; about well carrying things GPP and nailing form on Oly lifts Like Push presses etc is what Im having to work on coming from a PL back ground we arent the most explosive in the world LOL

here this article is good and others on that site
http://www.totalperformancesports.com/articles.htm

I say train hard eat and paln on the 231 and lower class hell in coming into events Ill be in the 265 class and with best of luck ill be sitting at a pretty solid 245 hopefully 250 so ill be giving away a lot of LBSD but damn it im going to go balls out and well keep training hard to get better its all about performance

ah one last thing be prepared to eat, i was eating BIG before doing PL training to gain, well started strongman training and first two weks same intake lost 10lbs ive since upped intake 1000 more and first two weeks got 7 of those lbs back this week lost a lb im going to have to up it again man its taxing as hell EAT!!! But fun

Phill

Thanks for all the info and advice guys, I actually know Phil Phister and Brian Siders as I trained some with both of them earlier in their carreers. That was about eight years ago and I have since lost touch with them but if I were to get into this strongman stuff seriously I could look them up. Unless and untill then I won’t bother them with my sissy (relatively speaking…lol) lifts.
I was a decent deadlifter with an all time best of 600 at 212 body weight but never a good squatter and my overhead pressing isn’t too fancy either.
