Strongman Log!

Awesome effort Vinny keep it up can only get better form here.

NICE!

I guess you need to get a log to train with. If you could do the 275 axle I’m sure you could have done the 255 log if you had some training with it.

What was the deadlift medley like? Was the 475 axle at 18"? Were straps allowed for any of it? What was the 600lb frame? Is that like a trap bar? How high were the handles? Was the 545 deadlift from normal height or 18"?

What were the stone weights? 200, 240, 285, 320, 350?

Straps originally weren’t aloud for the axle but people started using them and Dione just stopped giving a shit after a while. I used no straps or a belt on any of them btw.

Also, the axle was a super slick rogue axle at standard height. The frame was a really authentic WSM/arnold classic style frame where the handles are very widely placed apart and a low pick. The 545 was standard height.

Stones were 200, 220, 250, 285, 305, 330, 350

And yeah, a 12" log is an unbelievable difference from a 10" or 8". I just had no drive behind the head since the log is so damn big. It’s a shame the log at my gym has to be a fucking smaller one!

Maybe I am weird but, I have much harder time Cleaning and espeacially Pressing a 10in log compared to a 12in. But I also press with a extreme arched back and almost just incline press it so the extra height the log sits up in my hands really helps me lower the range of motion and there fore makes a stronger press.

Damn you had to lift 7 stones? Shit. I would be exhausted.

I’d better start training my deadlift harder too. All your stuff was from the floor with no straps. Harsh!

It was 8 actually, I forget where the 8th one was.

And yeah dude, alot of strongman competitions are really based around your deadlift. You’d have to be lucky to find a competition where the deadlift is hardly needed. Anyway, lets get a 600lb deadlift.

Pressing 12" log is harder for me. Cleaning is equally easy, but cleaning is the strong part for me since my push press isn’t higher than my strict press yet.

You can’t push press more than your strict?! Never heard of that before.

Hm, I forgot to mention I weighed 222 some how at weigh-ins last friday. I’m assuming my scale at my gym (which is an old fashioned one) is 2-3lbs off. I ate like 4 bagels and 3 burgers the night before weigh ins, thus making me fear I’d be an overweight fatty, but was 10lbs less. Maybe I’m really just a little skinny baby and I didn’t even know it?

Anywho, plan for the moment is to resume training, but step my shit up in a way that I haven’t exactly pinpointed yet, but will soon. It’ll probably be changing up my deadlift program in a way where I’d be pulling heavy only once per 2 weeks (which I am already doing, or was doing for the comp prep), and adding ALOT more dynamics. I had a good chat with Brett Somerville, who’s quite an illustrious SPHW strongman competitor, who advised me to really breakdown my deadlift alot with dynamics, and hardly pull from standard height. I think he’s onto something, and even if it were to fail horribly, it is something I haven’t tried yet, so I will be giving that a go in the future.

First heavy deadlift session in a very long time on a reg bar. My friend Jarred was there and coached me throughout the entirety of the session. He told me, even with 225, that I was shooting my hips and losing the bar far out in front of my shins. I was advised to sit back into the pull, which was really hard for me to grasp. I just feel like I have no power off the floor in that way (I don’t). I’m also trying not to psyche myself out so much before I do it. I just kind of mean mug the bar and waste too much energy and focus on trying to tell myself it’s gonna be easy and blah blah blah. I changed that up by sucking it up, and doing my best to grip it and rip. Most of the pulls were pretty much shit. I shoot my hips REALLY early.

495x1 hard, really only would have hit 500 today with the botched form
505x0 got it at my knees, but couldn’t lock it out because my hips shot up so fast at the initiation of the pull
505x0, gave it a good rest and tried again with a clearer head, as last attempt I psyched myself out hard and lost the bar out in front of me. This time around I was extremely deliberate in sitting back into the deadlift and breaking the floor with just my legs, but in this position, I feel like I have no power. I did it anyway, pulled out the slack and just stopped. Beyond gassed.

I basically tied a PR with a 500lb pull, but with a radically different style of pulling. Not happy with the numbers, but I have no reason to be upset because I’ve got a new outlook and setup to pursue, and can only trust in the work I put in and faith I have in myself that shit WILL come together in due time. The deadlift has made me, and broken me, but the latter hasn’t came without all of my toil.

Are you wearing a belt?

Yeah, first time using a belt for heavy deadlifts. Didn’t really enjoy the experience but whatevz.

It’s always a distraction for me. Makes me meh my setup. I always pull without a belt.

Went to chiro today for the first time and he took an x-ray to find that my entire pelvis is quite contorted and it was causing a large deficit within my left leg (or right, I honestly don’t know). It’s so large that he advised getting a lift made custom on my fucking shoe. Allofmywhats.jpeg

So I then went to the gym and hit up some front skwats, talked to the owner and he told me it ain’t nothin and that he’d recommend me to the chiro Adam (Scherr) went/goes to, so I don’t have to risk being ill advised. Anywho, the oly lifter counter chick told me my issue is hindering my deadlift and floor picks so badly. This is bittersweet news, because my pelvis looks like a fucking smashed rock, but atleast now I know what I have to work on.

Tire/Sled Drag Medley

680xa bunch, had to spend allot of time warming up with this tire because it was filled with water, and became a flourishing habitat for frogs, giant jumping spiders with massive fangs and mosquitos. All the cumulative flips got the water out, so I was warmed up really well.

680x50ft/270 sledx50ft SUCKED, was supposed to be a warm up. It’s also terribly hot today, so I’m sweating like a bitch in heat.
680x50ft/360x50ft, hard but surprisingly, I dragged the sled without stopping, woooooooooo00000ooooo
680x50ft/450x50ft, pretty brutal, but finished very strong
