Strongman Equipment?

http://images.t-nation.com/forum_images/4/8/480310.1090855933396.l_620157_s04[1].jpg

I am trying to build/buy strongman equipment. What types of salvage places should I be looking for, and what questions should I be asking?

I ask for heavy stuff to drag around, and people think I’m nuts. Is there anything specific that is better to ask?

Does anyone have any other ideas on equipment and where to find it? What would be a good alternative to a dragging sled?

Also I bought this harness and a 75ft length of 1" thick rope to tow/pull my van around with. I think it might work. What do you think? I bought a carabiner to secure the front across my chest. Any advice?

I sent you a PM…but its pretty easy. Hope it was helful.

In faith,

Coach Davies

Look for a place where they recycle tires in your area, and you could pickup an old tractor tire for free.

Also, what i do is i get one of my buddies to sit in my car and step on the break constantly while i pull it…or you could just crank the parking break.
I also got myself an empty keg from the local beer store for 50$ CDN…fill it up with whatever you want and it gets pretty heavy quickly!

Hey coach,

Could you post here as well because I’m sure others (including myself) are interested.

Thanks.

I didn’t get your PM Coach.

Darkid- do you just carry it around (the keg)? Drag it?

Do you think that harness will work?

Looks like somebody beat me to this question. I’m definately wondering where I can get some equipment.

Let me know how the harness works. Me and my roommate were looking for sleds to to drags with, but everything I’ve found it pretty expensive. Definately looking for some afordable options.

I’ll let you know for sure. I got the harness and an oval (symmetrical) carabiner from mgear.com. It was like $30 total.

$50 for a keg? I thought they were like $15.

I went to the local Home Depot and bought 2 50lbs bags of sand then to the military surplus store and bought 4 sandbags bags and a duffel bag. Made 4 25lb bags and can vary the load in the duffel bag simply by adding or subtracting small bags, total cost was about $50. Landscaping or outdoor/gardening stores carry big stones that can usually be picked up for not too many $$$, or if you know someone that ows a landscaping business ask him to get you one even cheaper.

That’s a good idea. I think I’ve found a gym getting rid of old plates and they’re going to give me 10, so maybe I can build a dragging sled… does anyone have plans/blueprints for this? I have a friend that can weld.

Well I know I’ve been pushing vehicles for a while, but the other day my friend and I hooked one of our confined space harnesses to one of our trucks and pulled it around a bit. Great exercise, legs were killin me! Unfortunately I never know where to find stuff either, I had to make a sled out of a pallet and some rope the other day. I think creativity is the key!

Here are two threads about homemade sleds:

For a sled take a wheelbarrow apart and attache two eyehooks to the front part of the basket portion.

With this you don’t have to load it with plates. Anything heavy that will fit into it works.

Right… but I have plates so why wouldn’t I use them. My apartment is very limited on space so the plates save much more space than say… a bunch of rocks.

i have a pulling harness made out of old car seat belts from a junkyard and riveted it together…works pretty damn well

what do you pull with it? a sled?

Does anyone have plans for an EliteFTS style sled?

I don’t remember where the post is, but someone used the hood from a car. Would seem pretty easy, weld a pole in the middle for your plates and make a few holes for your rope. I’m not very mechanically inclined, so take it with a grain of salt.

Here is a sled for only $60(less than half of elitefts).

brute strength

I don’t, however, know about the quality of the products they sell on this website.

Good Luck,

Todd

I go to a tech school and so have access to a variety of metals, cutting tools, bending tools, and guys that can weld. Here’s another question:

Does anyone OWN an eliteFTS style sled that they wouldn’t mind taking a tape measure to and posting the measurements on here?

I have purchased a yolk, farmers walk handles, and a steel log from new york barbell. It is all decent quality and you cannot beat the prices. I own a Powerlifting gym just outside of Flint, Michigan so the equipment has been through hell and back. It has survived.
