Do you bigger guys find your size gets in the way sometimes? What I mean is, I personally love mountain biking, snorkling, hiking, rock climbing, and snowboarding. Since I want to put on a few pounds I dont want to lose out on the other activities, know what I mean? I know Mariusz can do everything but hes a freak.
What exactly are you asking? If extra weight is helpful to strongman? Or are you afraid that you’re going to load an atlas stone one day and the next day wake up too big to go hiking? You don’t have to be huge to participate in this sport, and I really don’t think that any mass you gain is going to get in the way of your current activities.
Most strongman lead very active lifestyles, doing more than just lifting heavy things. And further, it’s not like you’re gunna suddenly end up a 350lb monster just because you press a log instead of a barbell. If, in the off chance you DO find yourself getting too large for your regular activities, just cut back on your food intake and lifting.
Besides that, it’s not like all strongman are 330lbs+, there is a lightweight class and most competitors are actually under the 300lb mark, you only see the big ones on TV.

Thank you, I was needing a good laugh today!
^i loaded a 300lbs stone once and woke up as Savikas, i’m all big and shit and now i can’t go rock climbing. darn it.
OP, yeah its a trade off. anything calling for sustained running, jumping of any kind is out of the question.
rock climbing? hell no.
realise this post is a month old, but i find myself wanting an answer similar to this guy.
Ill start by saying no I dont want to be 330 pounds, i dont want to be huge. ive already been 330 pounds…not very fun.
Do your ‘i accidently put on 100 pounds and now cant climb’ thing all you want.
but I weight about 225 pounds (6 foot 1 inches, around 10-12% bf).
however i have started rock climbing, and simply put - hauling my arse up the wall is hard! All of my smaller more lithe friends are starting to progress past me.
strutting around mumbling about my 190kg deadlift only helps you rationalise so far.
So no you wont accidently become huge, but you can easily handicap yourself from any serious level of climbing.
what im more interested in is a programme that will help me trim down a little…maybe to 210 with less body fat, and that will help me develop alot of explosive strength…which makes me think of mixed martial arts style programmes.
Anyone got any advice on weight management while gaining strength?
just realised this is in the strongman section, so before you flame me telling me to post elsewhere, dont bother i am already off to do this.

I won a local climbing competition at the end of my last bulk, 210lbs, probably around 15%bf or more. I’m pretty sure I could have won it weighing 220lbs. The simple answer is to get stronger and improve your technique and flexibility.
I think you’re first priority should be the stronger part, because if you’re walking around mumbling about your 190kg deadlift at your bw, I immediately think that your upper back isn’t strong enough for rock climbing. This will come with more time in the gym and on the wall.
I’m not saying this to be a dick, just that maybe you should look within rather than looking for excuses.
As far as the cutting down thing, any sensible diet will do. The “cutting while maintaining strength” thing has been discussed to death.
yes this is what i mean.
rationalising that im much stronger than anyone else in the climbing room only works until you realise I weigh twice as much as they do.
So your right I do need to get alot stronger.
Im not so worried about losing weight, as I am about gaining alot of strength without putting on the pie!
(and I put on weight very very easily)
