I’m staring down 48 with no injuries, but strong is relative, to me a body weight press and a clean of more than that is strong. I have a 3 year old daughter and am torn between pure strength training (coupled with weapons training) to scare the living crap out of the boys I can already see in her future and just all around mobility, health.[/quote]
Yea my daughters are 19 and 17, so I not only need to be stronger than the boys, but have some stamina to chase the fuckers down.
I started lifting when I was 13 and of course did it wrong in the early years. Now I am paying for it. But the mobility and health is really what made me decide the last two back injuries have just finally made me decide after I had to get the wife to put on my socks and boots.
you guys (punny and derek) just touched on my big issue just now! wow!!
I am 46 and very fit,.however its been a price to pay. I just want to sit on the couch and eat donnuts all day… just got married last year and have a baby on the way this week…I am currently wondering about what to do…Heavy squats and tons of clean and presses have worn me down as of late. I just wonder if its wiser to stay lean and fit an stop trying this power lifting I been doing and starting to kill the knees etc…
what do you guys think? Having a boy whom I want to run and play sports may make my thinking change right?
any ideas?

Its hard to give up the heavy weight all together, but I just had to make the choice. I was 255+ last year this time, now I am at 205+. Feel tons better, still have the occasional back pain but nothing, compared to what I did. Shoulders are finally getting healthy (I stopped doing bench) and I can sleep at night without waking up with my hands going numb.
Its hard choices to make and if you see some of the old PL guys like Tate and Wendler they have changed their work out approach for much of the same reasons.
Some people are built for long term heavy pounding, some are not.

Looking good Derek. Glad to read you’re feeling better. You’ve upped the distance you run since I last read your log several months ago. Great work. Steve
