Strong is Beautiful

Honestly, he makes it up as we go. Accommodating my (few) requests for stuff like squats and bench. Having someone else deal with the workout once per week so that I don’t have to is pretty much all I ask.

Would I prefer that he do this? Sure. But that is just not the sort of trainer that works at my wimp-ass Y. He is cute and entertaining. And his skill is getting me to do stuff I hate, and squeezing the last possible rep out of me. Its a nice counterbalance to the solo 5/3/1 training I do the rest of the week.

Exactly an hour.

George, I’m sorry that the caving knee thing is back for you. I’m confident that as I build up my strength (and you rebuild yours) we can make this go away.

N, goblet squats aren’t my favorite thing but I do believe its a useful exercise. Snow is gone for me too! Yay!

You’re gonna be hotter than the sun, soon.

(Too cheesy?)

Hope the fractional plates make you happy when you get them. Sounds like a great purchase to me!

I bought some fractionals from IW a few years ago. They make progression possible where it might not otherwise be so.

Um…you, me, bacon and nutella?[/quote]

yes. yes ma’am. yes plz.

kimba- your hips are weak. which is why your knees cave. moar paused pull throughs for you. paused at the top, with you sqeezing the living fuck out of your glutes. every part of them. till they tingle. its also why you tend to hyperextend during deadlifts.

I was thinking more like comparing vocabulary, snatch grip deads, OH squats.
citrusy meats and macadamia nuts bacon and nutella are hard to beat.

I can agree - cb4 kimba’s hips are micro.
I would say db or kettle bell swings over pull throughs - the latter being hard to load.
paused is good-

clenching is the shit

Are you guys still talking about lifting?

Rachelle, I see NOTHING cheesy about that comment. Its just happy-making.

DCA, that is exactly what I’m hoping those fractional plates will do for me on MPs and bench. I will learn a new Excel trick and round to the nearest .25 lbs on my 5/3/1 spreadsheet, and thus make progress for longer before I’m forced to reset maxes.

CBear, I completely agree that my hips are weak. I LOVED doing the paused pull-throughs, but the up position with the rope handle is the cause of my left wrist pain, as best as I can determine. There is, however, no inherent reason why I’d need to use the rope handle for this, is there? Perhaps if I attached a handle that I could grab palms down (mimicking a kettlebell swing grip) I could put these back in the rotation.

KMC, pausing and clenching KB or DB swings might be the other great solution to this problem, both hip and wrist. I love this exercise as well. And doing rehab shit that I love isn’t even painful enough to call “rehab”.

Joe, of course. All lifting all the time in this log.

A trainer with no plan? Does he truly make it up when you walk in the gym? Umm, if so, whatever you’re paying him is way too much. Unless, of course, he’s beautiful and the sight of him makes it worth the price. There was a short period in my life where I paid a trainer. He was a good trainer, too. But his body was so damn distracting to me. Seriously.

Well in fairness I got confused by all the clenching your nutella parts.

Bingo.

i use the regular metal handles that the guys use when they do their cable flys… dunno if theres a name for em, but i have a pronated grip.

sure blame the pullthroughs for everything. i bet you just need some more sleep.

^ Also glad to hear this. Doing pull throughs with rope handle and having long nails (whatever bitches) is killer on the hands. I’ll try it with that device too.

ps. Cbear, I swearz I’m not following your ass around! I mean, its not like I’m a creepy weirdo…yet.

Also Kimba, hot trainers are where its at! Just sayin’

Can’t wait to see how these micro plates workout for you - i’ll follow suit.

CBear, I know exactly which handles you mean and will try them tomorrow. And, just putting it out there to the universe, “stop fucking waking me up at 3:48 AM for no reason, kthanxbai.” yawn.

Maschy, you and I are the beginnings of the hot trainer fan club 'round here. Training plan v. tight t-shirt - sign me up for door number two.

What are these hot trainerrs you speak? Are they like unicorns?

Unicorns only like virgins…

Speaking of virgins, I was married at 13. A child bride, like you said Kimba.

You will LOVE your microplates. They are among my closest friends.

Joe, hot trainers exist. Unlike unicorns, which are useless to me in any event.

The microplates came! So cute. I look forward to friending them.

Friday Nite Training – 5/3/1, Wave 4, Week 2 – Deadlift and Bench Day

Sumo Deadlift
65# (from 2 risers) 1 x 5 warmup
From 2 steps:
85# 1 x 5 warmup
105# made up of 10# plates 1 x 5 warmup
125# made up of 10# plates 1 x 3 <–working
From floor:
145# 1 x 3 <–working
165# 1 x 5 <–money set, rep PR +3 because I’ve never lifted this exact weight before.

I was happier with my form on this lift as opposed to my all-time PR of 170# x 3 that I did last month. Progress, I think.

Bench Press
Bar 1 x 5 warmup
65# 1 x 3 <–working
75# 1 x 3 <–working
81# 1 x 2 <–money set, failed on 3

I didn’t have time to un-round the spreadsheet numbers before going to the gym, so I randomly put the cute 1/2 weights on the bar, hoping to get 3+ reps. No dice. Time to re-set this max and make good use of fractional plates.

I experimented with putting 25# plates under my feet, and I really liked it. Although it didn’t really help my lifting tonight. My plan to is continue with this.

Paused Cable Pull-throughs (3 sec. pause at top and bottom)
42.5 1 x 10
47.5 1 x 10
52.5 1 x 10

I used the metal D-handle (instead of the rope handle) and my wrist was perfectly fine with this exercise using a double overhand grip. I did alot of clenching of the butt and I can really feel it in the glutes right now. Next time, I’ll go heavier.

Dips
5# dumbbell between feet 1 x 10
BW 2 x 10

First time training weighted dips in almost two months. Went well, and didn’t hurt my gimpy left wrist. I’m coming back on these!

Sweet camera shake on the deads. When are you gonna try and pull 200 off the floor? You are very, very close.

I was quite proud of the camera shake.

This month the 5/3/1 program has me pulling 175 for the wave max. I’m guessing it will be a couple of months before I ramp up to 200. Which is OK. The slow progression is allowing my form to keep pace with the weight I can break off the floor. I still need to fix the hyperextension and work on pulling back and bringing my hips through faster.
